looking for cool spanish music
I like rock and certain types of metal but I've found that the best way to get spanish slang is to listen to rap. Can anyone recommend some good spanish bands?

Well, since you like rock and metal, I can recommend you Héroes del Silencio. They were pretty much the most popular rock band to come out of Spain in the late 80s/90s. They only released 4 albums but they're all pretty good. Barón Rojo are Heavy Metal and while they're pretty good, I don't know of a good starting point for them, but you should youtube them.
As for rap and the likes, sorry but I've got nothing there. I might recommend La Mala Rodríguez, since a once coworker of mine who used to listen to a lot of Spanish hip hop/rap said she was really good. You could start with that.

They're instrumental, but check out Rodrigo y Gabriela. Their self-titled album is their best.

La Mala rodriguez is pretty awful. Maybe you'd like Mago de Oz, if you're into power metal.

Cool stuff, thanks. I like la Mala Rodriguez she's from Spain, I've never met anyone from Spain or heard them talk. Spanish language is so much more diverse than English.
Mago de oz is confusing. They dress like metalheads then sing merengue/salsa (don't know what to call it). But still cool, really relaxing. I was expecting metal, maybe I got a weird album?
Heroes del silencio rock haha

If you liked her then listen to Nach Scratch, SDFK and Arma Blanca. Personally I really don't enjoy their music but I think it's better than La Mala Rodriguez. Also thick spanish accent ahoy.

Rata Blanca are pretty good, you might like them. They're like the Argentinian Iron Maiden.

Roxanna is a talented spanish artist! She sings American and Spanish songs, a wonderful combination. Check her songs out "Para Siempre" and "Unforgotten" on her youtube channel! youtube/RoxannaMusic

La Quinta Estación - El Sol No Regresa
1280 Almas - Si mi quisiera
Also looking for suggestions.

El cuarteto de nos!
If you like somewhat funny and off beat lyrics, go with those guys.
La Vela Puerca, also from Uruguay, are good too, but I much, much prefer El cuarteto.

The Heatwave is a UK-based dancehall collective who throw some amazing parties. The main guy, Gabriel Heatwave, is (if I recall correctly) from Columbia. He did a mix for the now defunct blogariddims series called La Ola De Calor, which I have recently learned means The Heatwave. It is awesome.

Like Ini Kamoze sings in the opening track, there's a world of (reggae) music on La Ola De Calor: sung, rapped and MC'd almost entirely in Spanish, from reggae to soca, dancehall to cumbia and reggaeton to hip hop. Artists featured hail from Panama, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica, Spain, England, Canada and the USA. Thanks to Rhythm & Flow (Barcelona), Kinky Music (Madrid), King-Der (Badalona) and Topa Top Productions (Costa Rica).
