ς

If it were in the middle of a word, I'd post σ, but that's at the end, so it's ς.

Not to be confused with ζ.

Or ξ, for that matter.

τ

Speaking of swirls, maybe σ and ς are both springs, but one is being viewed from the top, and the other is being viewed from the side.

Spoiler:
I just Googled "spring images" to illustrate this, and unleashed an avalanche of flowers and butterflies. FAIL!

The main gustatory difference between a spring roll and its egg cousin is that spring rolls have thin, often translucent flour wrappers and usually aren't fried, while egg rolls have thicker, deep-fried wrappings. Also, spring rolls in America are often filled with carrots and bamboo, while egg rolls are more likely to be filled with meat and bean shoots. Oh, and one other difference: Spring rolls are Chinese; egg rolls probably aren't.

In fact, Chinese cuisine in America is so vastly different from Chinese cuisine in China that many American Chinese restaurants advertise, beneath their English names, the words "Westernized Food" in Chinese.

I have seen the fried ones advertised as "spring rolls," but not at authentic dim sum restaurants.

Probably. Apparently there is something called a rolling spring electrode that is part of a tool to detect flaws (called "holidays") in pipe coatings. The springs used with holiday detectors don't look like the springs in the picture I chose, though:

http://www.elcometer.com/en/coating-ins ... ories.html
https://www.buckleysinternational.com/p ... 400mm-e756

I wonder if, when a holiday detector goes off, it sings "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas."

There could be a US/UK distinction here - the term "egg roll" is something I've only heard on American TV shows.

Yes, that's possible.

Speaking of cultural differences, two years ago I was astonished to hear "gyros" being pronounced "JIGH-rose," on several different Greek islands. I guess the Greeks have collectively decided that it's futile to try to get English-speaking tourists to say "YEE-rohss". If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. At least long enough to take their euros.

That's the best part of living in California--all the lovely ethnicities, who have brought their lovely food. Yum.

Spoiler:
(With a few exceptions, such as my Persian brother-in-law's rose-flavored cookies. And my Chinese in-laws' salted plums, which are vile. The stuff I like makes up for those, though.)

This really does vary a lot by region though.

Ask my mom about her recent trip. She will go into excruciatingly minute detail about every meal she ate and every person in her tour group. And will say nothing about the cool places she visited. Time will slow to a crawl, I assure you.
