Re: The "I can't find a particular XKCD comic" thread
I know, actually is the other way round (as in "How it Works") and it didn't sum up, but I was so sure... Well it must be some kind of confabulation - I can even see the picture in my mind (with xkcd style).
I must have seen it somewhere else. Thanks.

Re: The "I can't find a particular XKCD comic" thread
I think somewhere on xkcd there was a list of things to worry about,
and it was pretty long.
approximately like this
1. war
2. asteroid hitting us
3. global warming
...
101. (was something funny)
...
Looking forward to joyful reunion with this one
I failed to find it by googling for xkcd worries; explainxkcd war asteroid "global warming"; etc.

I don't think there's anyone I know who tells stories like the first panel of that one...

Yes, it's the first one. It's not as I remembered it. It's B/W and I thought I saw it in xkcd... but it really doesn't quite fit.Deva wrote:How close to these?
Thanks a lot, Deva.

THANK YOU to Deva for finding the What If 146 for me!

Re: The "I can't find a particular XKCD comic" thread
I hope this time I'm not wrong...
Is there an xkcd comic where a guy sends private pictures to his girlfriend taking all kind of security measures but she is not avoiding her coworkers watching the pictures over her shoulders? I thought it had the words "weakest link" in it but I cannot find it.

Re: The "I can't find a particular XKCD comic" thread
Believes not. Found nothing convincing elsewhere either. Closest:
Attempted various combinations of security, steps, flaw, vulnerability, "weakest link", "weak link", girlfriend, coworkers, computer, phone, comic, and webcomic. (Edit: And cyber.) Welcomes additional keyword suggestions (from anyone).
Do you remember one panel or many?

I remember many, maybe 4:
- 1.- The guy says to the other what he's doing.
2.- The other guy is shocked.
3.- The first tells all the precautions he's taken to prevent the message is intercepted/decrypted.
4.- The girlfriend is watching the pictures and the others are laughing at them while she is complaining but not avoiding them to watch the pictures.

Triggered Google's Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. (Typed in "deter". Appreciates their humor.) Calls it there. Tried Encryption, AES, SSL, Password, Careful, People, and Humans as keywords. (Excludes less common attempts, such as Decrypted, Imgur, and Cipher.) Returned nothing close. Offers a different weakest Link as consolation.

Re: The "I can't find a particular XKCD comic" thread
Well thank you for the effort. I am beginning to entertain grave doubts about the reliability of my memories. It's not that the comic is not from xkcd. It seems it never existed anywhere except in my imagination.
Re: The "I can't find a particular XKCD comic" thread
When you're at the point where even Deva can't find what you're looking for, doubting your memory is not an unreasonable position.

Re: The "I can't find a particular XKCD comic" thread
The obvious solution is to start your own comic, draw the one you remember, and wait for someone to write angry tweets in your general direction about how you're ripping off something else.

Help! I'm looking for one that explains the "tiers" of friendship by using a hill/mountain. I think it was one in color, and the "strangers" category was the vast area around the hill. There may have been people climbing from one "tier" to another on the hill?
Thanks for any insight!

Deva, I swear you must be the anthropomorphic personification of either the entire internet, or just google.

Which strip am I thinking of?
I checked the "before you post" thread's list of threads...I tried seraching for the comic in various ways, and I tried searching for "find the comic" "which comic" and things of that nature...and if I found something, I wouldn't be posting here. Also, the more I think about this, the more I hope this was an XKCD comic...
Wasn't there a strip one day that started out with someone setting their facebook status to "I love cookies!" and a bunch of people liked it and commented " Me too!" "Me three!" "Oh me yarm YES ME TOO!" ...then he used the edit button and changed the status to "Man, I love killing babies!" Where did that comic go...>.>;

Looking for comic about obsessing forever while composing an email
I apologize if I'm using this board all wrong -- my first time here.
While randomly browsing, I came across a comic about taking forever to write an email, and then forever to respond -- trying to get the wording perfect. Any ideas?

Re: The "I can't find a particular XKCD comic" thread
I'm searching for a comic. I'm sure it's xkcd.
A guy tells someone to get something strange for him from out of the house. Just before the other person leaves, the guy starts saying sappy things. I remember there being text like 'whenever someone goes out of the house I'm afraid'. Almost these exact words.
Thanks!

Not 100% sure this was ax XKCD comic. I'm searching the internets but can't find it. It might be a PhD Comic or other comic... But I'd really like to find it
It's about someone at a computer trying choose/decide the name they will use for their first paper publication, and the importance of it as all their work will carry that name, citation metrics, history, etc. They are explaining this to someone talking to them, which made me think of it as an XKCD comic because there are so many of them with someone walking up to someone at a computer...

Re: The "I can't find a particular XKCD comic" thread
Doesn't sound like an xkcd to me... Not sure what else it could be though. Maybe Abtruse Goose (which started updating again after three years)?

Re: The "I can't find a particular XKCD comic" thread
I'm also pretty sure that there isn't an xkcd about naming a paper (PhD or Abstruse Goose are much more likely to cover that topic), but you might be getting mixed up with #910: Permanence, which is about naming a server.

I had that conversation a couple weeks ago. The PhD student in my lab (I am a tech) is publishing soon and asked me what I wanted. Still resigned to people forever mixing up my first and last names.
There's a certain amount of freedom involved in cycling: you're self-propelled and decide exactly where to go. If you see something that catches your eye to the left, you can veer off there, which isn't so easy in a car, and you can't cover as much ground walking.

I swear I searched various key words, but didn't find it. And I saw XKCD: Permanence obviously at top of Google, but no I wasn't getting confused about that.
Re: The "I can't find a particular XKCD comic" thread
I need to find a comic--I'm sure it's XKCD--with a single panel, panorama of a kingdom on the left and an identical, reverse image on the right, where one side has positive labels and the other side has the same things with negative labels. The point was to expose our tendency to subjectively judge "the other." Does anybody remember this comic? Have a link, please?

And I'm sure you're wrong, because it's not an XKCD comic.

This looks like the right place to ask.
You know how there's an XKCD on every topic? Where's the XKCD talking about the fact that there is an XKCD for every topic?
