A puzzle so hard that I even have a difficult Tim figuring out what's going on when I am looking at the solution.
But b is able to (maybe) solve it just from a few years worth of data.

Hmm, Pope.

Part 3/2 - what if it doesn't?

Continuation of this post.

So I found that with this formula

Code: Select all

( (Y AND 0x8) + (Y AND 0x4) - ((Y XOR T) AND 0x2) + ((Y XOR T) AND 0x1) +
  (H AND 0x8) - (H AND 0x4) + ((D XOR H) AND 0x2) - ((D XOR H) AND 0x1) ) mod 5
(and adding sloshers) we can generate the epilogue sequence, at least for the current yearcube.

It would be nice if someone who is not me checked if I didn't make a mistake with it.

So at this point we're quite sure that GLR's epilogue generator function is using decimal digits (encoded as bcd or something like that) from the date as its arguments, right?

What if I told you that my guess is that this is not how GLR does it?

what?

What I think could be happening is this:
The epilogue function gets the date as a text, and not as numbers,
for example:

Code: Select all

"2018-01-10 19:05"
(there are many ways to write this)
.And then it interprets some bytes from that string as numbers:

Code: Select all

"2018-01-10 19:05"
    ^    ^  ^^
    |    |  ||
    Y    D  TH

So "0" becomes 48, "1" becomes 49 and so on.

But wait, isn't there a conflict with what I wrote in my previous posts?

Actually, there isn't.

In hexadecimal "0" is 0x30, "1" is 0x31, and so on.
The lower 4 bits (which are the ones used by the epilogenerator) are the same.

So all those operation on bits will give exactly the same results.
It doesn't make my predictions lell valid.

I think that a generator that gets the date as text and works on its bytes is more likely than one which gets the date as numbers and converts them to separate the decimal digits.

At least that's how I would do it.

...or maybe not?
Now TIOC has become "an acronym in the BFTF story (see also LEML)."
and there was no TIOC in BFTF.
And CTIF is "1. A mysterious acronym in the LEML story. (Possibly an acronym for ChronoTransponder InterFace)"

Maybe we should create an actual "LEML" story, just to increase the confusion?

8<----------------
You might have noticed increased problems with botcastle accessibility in the recent days.

Somewhere in the past there were times when it was having problems with its HDD. this was made at that time.
I found out that these were problems caused by the disk's power connector.

Recently, random resets and disk problems started to reappear and increase.
Once again it was a power supply problem disguised as something else.

One day I noticed that turning off my desk lamp can reset the botcastle.
I connected an oscilloscope to the 5V supply to see what the lamp is doing to it.
I saw how terrible it was even without any lamp action.
I replaced the power supply. Now all works well again.

Why don't you just tell us what these things are?
Let's try yet another of these 4-letter acronyms. How about BSTA? frame 55, noting the dialogue:
B: TIOC ??
AP: TCP/IP over Coincidence.
AP: Yes, someone actually did such a thing.
[…]
AP: By Linux you mean Gnu/Linux?
AP: Or LEML Linux?
B: Would be the first one.
B: I didn't hear of leml before today.

There is LEML in the dialogue, along with TIOC, both originated by character "AP:".

EDIT: Once again, I've edited the entries for TIOC and for CTIF, and I think it might be better now. Please tell us the correct information, instead of repeatedly telling us that the current text is not correct.

I wish I could have figured out which 4x4 block to use (the one ending on f or b), but I haven't had a clue since 2015. I simply had to wait two years to find out which one it was going to be. Everything this time is based on the first letter from January 1st, which was a D.

I am completely mystified and amazed by this discussion. And this stuff:

Addams, thanks for posting to yappo's wonderful songs. I can't find the post now, but it took me back in such a happy way.

Did I already say, Wow, it's Opiboble? If not, Wow, it's Opiboble! Hai! It's great to see you.

And I saw pelrigg a while back. Hi to you too!

I am so far behind in bsta. I was thinking I wanted to blitz Homestuck first, but haven't had time to do that, so instead, I've just gotten further behind in bsta. :( And I need to blitz the mrobdex story. Lately I've started doing genealogy work. It's something I wanted to do more of while my dad was alive, but never had time. But now I'm getting into it. It's so confusing. People make fun of celebrities coming up with weird names for their kids, like MoonUnit, Apple, North, and whatever else, but believe me, future genealogists will thank them. I'm wading through generations of James Leos and John Leos and Leo Jameses. There are two different Kitties with the same last name. It's so hard to keep them straight! I should have one of you epiloguers work it out. :) If there was a Dweezil here and there, then I'd know who was who!

Did I already wished everyone a Happy New Yip? I think my memory is going. Happy New Yip to all, and to all a molpish nip!

Did I ever Post anything about moving out of the Forest?
It was beautiful up there, but it was always Cold.

Spoiler:
The creatures of the Forest had no respect for Me.
They walked in and made themselves at Home in My Home.

There were Spiders, Mice, Rats, Quail, Raccoon, Skunk, Deer and Elk.

I don't miss them.
Not one little bit.

I have heat.
I am Warm!

I look back and wonder, 'How did I live like that?'

I was so very ill and always cold.
My new nest is small and warm.

I am so very grateful.

Re: 1190: "Time"; My path to the land of epilogues

If you want to find out more about wow the minds work then maybe this will be helpful:

--------------------------------

Part 4/2 - how I arrived at epilogueworld and what i did there

Until recently my knowledge about the epilogue sequence was very limited.
I knew that there are 5 frames and that they are appearing every hour not randomly but in some pattern.
ggh, hujackus, slinches, maybe others too noticed some patterns and even made some predictions.
When reading their posts I wouldn't understand much what they were talking about.
But I didn't really try.

When I was making BFTF I started thinking about our epilogueframes a little.
Quickly decided that BFTF will not have such a thing.
But I also started thinking how I would generate such sequences.

I thought
I would probably not make such a nice thing as GLR did. Instead I would just build it from some XORs, they make nice patterns. And also they mix the influence of different variables making them less obvious.

I had no idea how close to the truth I was then!
I didn't post anything about this so there is no way for me to prove it.

Then I stopped thinking about it again.

And then, it was 2018.

New year always brings the topic of epilogue sequences back to the OTT.
And 2018 is special because it allows for new predictions for 2018-2021.
So OTTers start talking about it again.

Ucim asks what are the "sloshers".
My knowledge was that some patterns were identified but there are frames which don't fit those patterns and they are called "sloshers".
I decided to check if I'm remembering this correctly.
I found the page on mschaviewer describing the situation really well.

I learn about what the current understanding is.
But I'm actually trying to understand it this time.

So I learn that:
  • there are only 5 different 4x4 squares
  • the sequence seems to be based on decimal numbers interpreted as hexadecimal
  • the year can be reduced to just 3 letters
Also from hujackus' picture I learn about the year patterns and the 90 degree rotation.

Wow that's so cool!
I decide to make a spreadsheet to illustrate this.
I wanted to see this in action to understand this better.

While making this spreadsheed I noticed more:
There aren't 5 different possible 4x4 squares. Actually there is only one! the 5 comes from shifting the "base" 4x4 square by different offsets (mod 5).
Big enlightment.
Also, the expansion from the 3 letters to the letters representing each 4x4 square is also done just by applying offsets (mod 5).

So, in my spreadsheet, I could expand from the 3 letters to the full year by just adding offsets and mod 5, nothing else was needed!
I post the file and I keep thinking and reading

The 3 letters defining a year also seem to be arranged in 4x4 squares.
To predict the future we would have to know what is going to be the next square.
I look at it and I notice some regularity.
I make my first prediction.

Next day I'm not so sure about my prediction.
I think that it's much more likely to get a pattern break at 2020.
because if everything else depended on single digits then it's no reason why the year would be different.

I'm still wondering why the patterns are how they are.
There is mod 5 everywhere but at the same time everything seems to be related with 4s.

I make a very lucky guess.
I guess that because I could expand the year using just addition then it is very likely that the sequence generating function is built by adding multiple components depending on different variables.

Maybe at least some components can be identified by analysing points where other variables are 0?

I look at the "outermost" sequence.
Left column in this picture.
everything else than year is 0.
ABDE EACD DEBC CDAB (BCEA?)

How could such a sequence be built?
I see 4s and 5s in this.
after every 4 characters we get the same sequence shifted by 5.
Let's start with adding (mod 5) mod 5 to mod 4.

Code: Select all

   0123 4012 3401 2340 1234
 + 0123 0123 0123 0123 0123
---------------------------
   0241 4130 3024 2413 1302
Nice but useless.

But let's do something.
I'll start with assigning numbers to letters.
A = 0 because on the top left edge where everything is 0 there is A.
If we also consider how the squares are all the same but shifted we're left with only 2 possibilities:
01234 = ABCDE or 01234 = AEDCB.
The first one is more promising because then we have the same sequence increased by 4, every 4 letters.

So the sequence is now 0134 4023 3412 2301 (1240?)
Let's subtract mod 5 from it:

Code: Select all

   0134 4023 3412 2301
 - 0123 4012 3401 2345
----------------------

0011 0011 0011 0011

Interesting...

Something different now.
the sequence is repeating so maybe focus just on one repeat, 0134.
or rather the whole square:
Image
How to build such a block?
I notice the 2x2 chessboard patterns of two kinds of 2x2 squares which also have this chessboard.
Image
Where have I seen this before?

Suddenly, I know.
XOR!
xors everywhere!
xors produce such patterns

If i xor the lowest bits of the year and the tendays i get this:
Image
And if I do the same with the next bit I get this:
Image
But actually, what I get is this:
Image
when the operation is performed on whole numbers and not on isolated bits.

Ok, what next?
how to build the square from these parts?
Simply adding them will not work:
Image
Two of the 2x2 squares are correct, two other are off by 1.
What I really need is this:
Image
But how do I transform nicely Image into Image ?

No, wait I don't have to .
I realise something.
I have to add a 3 but all I have is some 2s.
But in mod 5 adding 3 is the same thing as subtracting 2.
Let's try:
Image
Yes!
That's what I needed.

Now I have a nice way to generate the most basic of squares.
At this point I feel like nothing can stop me now.

So now to continue with the rest of the yearcube
what do I need to add to the base square to produce the correct sequence?
Let's see:
Image
So I need something that removes 1 every 4 years or somethings that adds 4 every 4 years.
The second option seems more promising.
Add a 4 every 4?
Is there a nice way to do it? preferable a bit operation?
Yes, I just have to ignore the 2 lowest bits, or, in other words do an AND 0xC operation.
I get a 0 0 0 0 4 4 4 4 8 8 8 8 12 12 12 12 sequence which is the mod 5 equivalent of what I need:
Image

Very good, I can generat the whole yearcube now!
This is already a success.

The next thing to do is to try to find a way to expand a year's 3 letters into the whole year.
Because the fullyear pattern is similar to the yearcube pattern it is very likely that also their generation will be similar.

Again, I start with the most basic square:
Image
It's similar but different.
I know. I see it.
It goes backwards.
Even more: the full year base square is the negative of the year cube base square. They add up to 0:
Image

If so, I can just replace this
Image
with this
Image
And success. the base square generator is ready. That was fast.

Now there's just one thing left to do.
What to add to the squares to produce the full pattern?
Let's see:
Image
I decide to expand it this way:
Image
There are multiple reasons for this:
  • the patterns are consistent
  • it aggrees with hujackus' extension
  • it is the same as the top of the year cube's base square: 0134
  • it seems to be the most promising
But even if this is not correct it doesn't matter at all.
because it can only effect digits higher than 9 which is not something we can see in the real world.

So how do I build this?
By similarity to this
Image
I could expect something like this:
Image
But that's wrong, unfortunately.
I cannot generate 0101 or 0022 with simple bit operations because those patterns are actually 0000111100001111 and 0000000022222222.
These are on different bits.
If I did the AND operations on the correct bits I would get 0000444400004444 and 0000000088888888.
And this is actually good news, because of mod 5.
In mod 5 subtracting 4 is the same as adding 1. and adding 8 is the same as subtracting 2.

So I try this
Image
And this is correct.

And with this I have all the parts!
Great success!
I almost don't believe it but I have managed to find a successful epilogue sequence generator.
Now the only thing left to do was to post it in an easily understandable way...

Redundant

It's my 100,000nd birthdip!
It's funny the new othercomic is about quotes because tonip with my family I played a (new for my birthdip) card game called Bring Your Own Book which involves picking quotes out of a book (you bring your own) to fulfil prompt cards. You take turns at being the Picker who reads out a prompt and then chooses the answer they like best. The first person to win four prompts wins the game. But whenever a player reaches two prompts won, everyone passes their book to the player on their left! It's pretty fun and interesting and clever.

Or from their website:
What's the tastiest “name for a candy bar” in that history textbook you're reading for school? How quickly can you find “lyrics from a country western song” in your dog-training guide? What kind of “advice for graduating seniors” will appear in your anthology of limericks?

So I'll leave you with: "What's part of a message in a birthdip card?" that appears in the OTC.

The story is different.

I looked at the dictionary.
I wanted to see what words I can find there.

I was surprised to find BSTA-related entries there: CTIF, TIOC, and even 80236.
I did not expect to find them there. they are not OTTish words. they are words from a story made by me which also is being posted to the OTT.
But now I think that having them is maybe actually a good idea because these words actually appear in some posts and someone reading such posts could need a dictionary to understand them.

According to the dictionary, TIOC was an acronym form the LEML story.

It is an acronym used in BSTA.

what if LEML is used here like an adjective, and BSTA actually is a LEML story, whatever that means:)
I thought that it's funny so I posted "Today I find out that BSTA is a LEML story..."

Mrob thanks me and corrects the TIOC entry.
I did not make any request to fix this but he did it anyway.
maybe he just wanted his dictionary to provide actual, helpful information (because that's what dictionaries do, right?)
For some reason I thought that "the LEML strory" was intentional.
I just didn't know why.
But I hoped that maybe mrob would comment on this and reveal it.
This was another reason dor me to make that post.

I went back to the dictionary to see what was changed.
CTIF was still a mysterious acronym form the LEML story
and TIOC now became an acronym from the BFTF story.

Only that BFTF had no such thing as a TIOC.
So nothing was improved really.
Apparently, all these (two) balthasarish handdrawn-stories with 4 letter names starting with B can be confused with each other.
Especially for someone who is not me.
We can't expect anyone to know and remember all this.

I write another post in which I show that CTIF is another word from a "LEML story" and that is TIOC is not from BFTF ("but from the other story" would be implied but again this is not obvious for someone who is not me)
I also include the "helpful" proposition to create an actual "LEML" story so that everything finally makes sense becomes even more confusing.

I receive another reply in which I'm told that I'm only telling that the current text is not correct.
And this is true, actually.
Important information (which I didn't at first think is necessary - I thought that the "LEML" was intentional) is missing from my posts.

But I can still improve, right?

Why don't you just tell us what these things are?
yes, and why can't GLR just tell us what "xkcd" means? :)
Oh, wait, he did.

This is the part where i have to be careful.
These are things from the BSTA story.
We learn about the bstaworld through the eyes of B and KXA.
So if they don't know something about their world why should we?

But I can prepare some explanation, at least based on what we all ready know.

the LEML story:
there is no "LEML" story.

the BFTF story:
It's the story that can be found here: http://1190.bicyclesonthemoon.info/aftertime/viewer?story=bftf.
Actually, "BFTF" was not meant to be an actual, official name of the story. I didn't think it really needs an "official" name.
But, because "bftf" appeared in the file names people started calling it "bftf" even before the story started. so I did too.
Even if "bftf" was not planned to be the official name it's not just random letters, it does mean something but that's not important right now.

the BSTA story:
It's the story that can be found here: http://1190.bicyclesonthemoon.info/bsta/.
unlike BFTF "BSTA" was meant to be the name. Even the very first frame starts from this title.
the meaning of "BSTA" was never revealed.

LEML (in BFTF):
In BFTF "LEML" appears on the space vehicle, the train and some big batteries on that train.
"LEML" is not supposed to really mean anything anything here.
I put it on the space vehicle because i wanted.
For the train there is a small story behind it.
In the past I made some drawings (like this one) with space rockets with a PKP logo on them.
PKP is the polish national rail company.
So if for the spaceship it was replaced by LEML then why not replace it for the train too?

CTIF (in BFTF):
There is no "CTIF" in BFTF but there is a "Chronotransponder Test Interface" with "/ct-if/" in its URL.

LEML (in BSTA):
In BSTA we have multiple things called "LEML".
In this quote we have 3:
B: One more question.
B: What's the differenced in LEML?
AP: LEML made an OS and they called it LEML.
AP: It uses a modified Linux kernel which is also called LEML.
AP: It's the only OS in which I could make the CT card work.

"LEML made an OS" - it suggests that there is an organisation or company or whatever which is called "LEML" and which made an OS.
"and they called it LEML" - the OS made by them is also called "LEML" or more precisely "LEML Linux":
AP: By Linux you mean Gnu/Linux?
AP: Or LEML Linux?
B: Would be the first one.
B: I didn't hear of leml before today.

by similarity to GNU/Linux which means a GNU system with a Linux kernel "LEML linux" could be a LEML system with a Linux kernel.
"It uses a modified Linux kernel which is also called LEML" - Yeah, looks like it. Only that the kernel is also called LEML. Or more precisely:
TLF: "LEML Extremely Modified Linux"

So it looks like there is an organisation or company of some kind that is called "LEML" that tries to put "LEML" into the names of the things they make.
The LEML system is used by two characters we haven't seen in a frame yet: AP (artificialPerpendicularity) and TLF (theLuckyfinder). we know that TLF uses the system inside an emulator.
When asked by ggh, FTH said he has no idea what "LEML" is.

CTIF (in BSTA):
CTIF seems to be a connection method (other than TCP/IP) available in the Coincidence chat software.
OTT: Hi FTH! TLF said they had selected CTIF as a connection method, and I was curious what CTIF was. Can you tell me?
FTH: It's some kind of communication protocol which is supposed to work with coincidence
FTH: but it doesn't
FTH: at least for me
FTH: it requires some special hardware, I heard
FTH: some radio stuff or something
FTH: I don't need it anyway

AP: I use the CT card.
B: Ok, I remember. You told it's kind of like wifi, right.
AP: Kind of, you could say that and you wouldn't be completely wrong.
B: Does it have anything to do with the ctif?
AP: It has very much to do. The CT card is a device which implements the ctif protocol.

AP and TLF are using it. TLF seems to have no idea what it is and how it works. AP seems to know much more about it.
the quotes suggests that it's some kind of wireless communication. And it needs some special hardware - the CT card.
And the CT card only works with the LEML OS.
AP: It's the only OS in which I could make the CT card work.

B and FTH know that CTIF exists but they can't use it. They don't have this device or this OS. We haven't seen KXA using Coincidence so we don't know about her.

TIOC (in BSTA):
TCP/IP Over Coincidence.
A tool that allows tunneling tcp/ip through the Coincidence chat.
A very useful thing if you don't have any network access but you have Coincidence connected through CTIF.\
That seems like a very uncommon situation but, apparently, thats what AP uses to access the Internet.
B receives TIOC from AP but doesn't install it. he sends it to TLF and they discover that she already has a never version.

80236 (in BSTA):
it's the "ID" of a Coincidence server.
Because, apparently, in Coincidence you don't find servers by their IP address but by some kind of number

New information not revealed before:
If you have TCP/IP selected then you are connecting to a server which is defined in your connection configuration.
And that server understands the ID and relays the connection to the actual Coincidence server.

80236 is also the "name" of a server hosting a Robotic Madness multiplayer game (in the current meta-frames of bsta)on port 59549. The IP address of that server is 192.168.80.236 which could mean that the server is in the same local network as the computer connecting to it in frame 190.

BFTF (in BSTA):
During the events just before the BSTA start a username "bicyclesonthemoonFromTwothousandFifteen" appeared on Coincidence. this was abbreviated to "BFTF".

Wow, there's a lot of information in that post, b. I think I'd like to read it, and then go back and blitz the various things, and see how everything fits together.

Of course, I'm behind on bsta so I'm really lost right now. :)
