I propose we simply use algebraic notation. One can keep track of the game using any chess program, and if you like you can even post screenshots.

Code: Select all
    W       B
1.  e4      e6
2.  e5      d5
3.  exd5    cxd5
4.  d4      d5
5.  Nf3     g6
6.  b3      Nc6
7.  Bb5

(I moved, by the way)

Alright, how about any reasonable representation of board position, human readable.

Any supplemental representation is fine.
Code: Select all
r . b q k b n r
p p . . . p . p
. . n . p . p .
. B . p . . . .
. . . P . . . .
. P . . . N . .
P . P . . P P P
R N B Q K . . R
(No move made)

Let's also say you should quote the person who made the previous move--that gives a clear indication of the chain of play; I think the misinterpretation was based on this.

How about both? (the notation and board, that is)

And quoting would be fine, except we'll soon end up with a very huge set of nested quotes and that's no good.

Both is fine by me.

There need not be any nesting... the idea is just to reference the previous guy. I guess just mentioning the username would work just as fine.

I hate that notation. I like old notation (Bishop to Queen's Knight 5). :P

It took me a few to figure out you were just stating the previous move.

(I tried to somehow highlight/colorized my last move, but it won't work as it's already in [ code ] tags. However, it shouldn't be too tough to see it with the previous move just above it.)

That's why we should use notation as well as the board. (Your move, by the way, was a6)

I have some time to get used to that. I'll take some time to read a Wiki on algebraic chess notation! =)

Not a valid move. It's black's turn (and that's white's knight).

Perhaps someone could code up a board which says whose turn it is? Maybe even have it take your username and display who the last two to move were. Even allow the two click move system, and display the previous moves in notation!

Or, y'know, we could organize an xkcd tournament on http://www.freechess.org/. That would be awesome.

I have a gameknot account already, but if we can get a group tournament going that would be good. I'd get whooped since I don't play enough chess. I play for fun, not to flex my mental muscles and kick others down into the coarse sand.

It's much easier to follow/see with a chess program:
http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html
The above software is safe--you can use anything else you want as well. You could leave it running and just advance the moves per the thread.

Yep, Black's pawn structure is fucked. And it's only safe to castle king side, if black castles at all.

And the instant that happens white castles queen side and pushes all his king side pawns.. :-(

I liked my idea of castling queen side, then pushing king's pawns better, lol.

That wasn't the only error... fixed manually (my algebraic move was intended--the rest came from who knows where, but that's what winboard slapped in my copy buffer).
