If you saw the people in Panama City drive, you wouldn't ask if it was "near." It's a funny town, to say the least. The county management in the olden days had enough foresight to build a dam so there is plentiful fresh water, while the rest of Florida thirsts. They built a MSW-burning plant so that not only does all the county's (and most of the surrounding counties') municipal waste go to making electricity for free, but the landfill gets a small fraction of the mass it would ordinarily.

Now they have an Intergalactic Spaceport that can't land airplanes much larger than a Piper Cub. They have so many condos that you can not see the water anywhere between St. Andrews state park and Hwy 79, and they can't sell them. Then there's the Charlie Foxtrot they built of a new Hathaway Bridge... Nice job on that one, FLDOT!

Nice to see you here, Dallas. It's been on PCola riders, but not often. That forum's a little light on content for me. Before that was cycleforums and sportbikes.net, neither of which I frequent of late. Tell your brother I want to go ride dirt bikes. I have a KLX300 and no truck to take it places!

Hey, first time poster, long time reader here. I live in Dothan Alabama right now. About 98 miles / 1 hour 45 minutes north of you. I lived in PC for about three years in Turtle Lake Apartments off of 23rd street, and worked for the Hilton hotels up and down Front Beach.

Just out of curiosity did you make to Wrath of Con? I'm not huge on Star Trek but I definately missed out on the Ghosthunter Q&A.

Harvard By The Bay....riiiiight. Harvard's gone down the tubes if it compares to a Florida State satellite campus. Sorry, I'm a gators fan. :mrgreen:

Yeah, Dothan, the great peanut capital. Sadly enough, I have done the Peanuts Around Town tour. And I've seen the world's smallest city block. I'm actually heading to the Wiregrass Art Museum in an hour to do some painting. The Peanut Festival is pretty sweet though. Considering my happy butt was raised in Fresno, the culture shock is pretty entertaining.

Had no idea about the racing club though, before I clicked the link I thought you were talking about a SCA club. Slight difference there. :oops:

Well I and at least 2 other xkcd readers live in Jacksonville. I've noticed from the Geohashing wiki that we have at least 2 others who are active here, but half our Saturday meetups end up occurring in the ocean.

I was going to suggest a meetup at Ancient City Con in Jacksonville for all those interested in attending. It's a pretty new con that's just getting off the ground, but it promises to provide some measure of entertainment. http://www.ancientcitycon.com/

Notably, they're going to be running a 4th edition game for beginners in most gaming sessions, and they have some interesting looking panels.

I suggest a meet-up in Ponce De leon Springs park. Its between Dothan and Panama City, and easy travel distance from Pensacola. Its close enough to be a day trip all the way from Mobile to Tallahassee. Its a park, so lots of space. Water to swim. We could have a bar-b-q or something if they allow it. Anyone up for it? Andrew(syko), edit and keep a Tally of names of people who want to come, in your original post. When we get a bit of people, we can submit a new post with a date.

Hi, south Florida sucks. It's way to hot 360 days of the year. I have lived here my whole life (21) and for the life of me, I can't understand how there can be any fat people down here.
Is there anyone remotely close to homestead? Talking to a wall will provide a more intresting conversation than most of the locals. Nice as most are, they are not runing any backround programs upstairs.

With the heat and humidity, people spend more time indoors getting fat. It's working for me, anyway.

I'd probably be up for Ponce de Leon, if I can get some gas money. I've been to that park once a long time ago and thought it a nice place for a walk. I can't recall specifics about it, and it's certainly not overstuffed with amenities, but it's --uhm-- nice.

ponce de leon is too far north for south floridians, 12+ hour drive for me with stops.
So is there enough XKCDians in south Florida to warent another meetup? Or perhaps an Orlando meet for all Florida, if there's not enough for the leon meet. (I'm not saying walt disney, it's just in the middle of the state)

Yeah, a central Florida meetup would definately be a good thing. I'm on the Space Coast (Palm Bay, to be precise), so anything much further than Orlando is really out of my range...

Which is a shame, because I'd give my right arm for chance to go to Dragon*Con in Georgia next week, but alas, the life of the poor and gas-money-less.

Anyone in Florida that would like to meet up for a few hours, post were you live and the perferd days of the week to meet.

I'm in Homestead and I would prefer Sunday or Monday. These days are just the most convinent for me, I can meet most days of the week, I work at night.

I lived on Long Island, NY for the first 18 years of my life. Everywhere I needed to go on that island was at a maximum of 100 miles from where I was on the island. Now, 100 miles might get me a straightshot horizontally across the state, and even then...

@ Zero088: I'm in Palm Bay, and I can meet, well, any damned day of the week. I would probably need a ride, though, if it wasn't SUPER local, or on a weekend day that a friend could drive me. *Doesn't have the money to pay for her car anymore*

Or, if it's in the UCF area, Tuesdays and Thursdays would be good. Good times for T/Th have yet to be determined, though.

I teach 8th grade math. It's pretty awesome, but since I (in the deepest cockles of my heart) like math more than I like the students, I've been contemplating moving up to high school once I have some more experience with the whole teaching side of it.

Aah, then I feel the need to apologize deeply to you in lieu of my own 8th-grade math teacher. The only accelerated math track available to me in 8th grade was still too easy for me back then, so I was kind of a bitch to my teacher. She didn't like that I would sit there, doodling in my notebooks all during class, even though I would get A's on all of my tests...

Still, it's great that you really enjoy what you teach. That always makes for the best teachers.

My college Chemistry professor was like that, and everybody loved him for it.

Also, just to stick something on-topic in here, I severely dislike Florida weather. :< It's hot, it's humid, and I hear thunder. Even though it was gorgeous and sunny earlier today. BLAH.

The next launch out of Kennedy is on 9/26/2008 at noon Eastern, they're launching the United Launch Alliance Delta 4-Heavy rocket (With a classified spy satellite for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office as cargo). :3
