I'm wondering if you gentlemen upgraded to Karmic (as opposed to installing over Jaunty and backing up then recopying your settings)- I had heaps of problems with 8.10 when I upgraded from 8.04, but a fresh install worked perfectly, and as such I've been keeping my home folder on a separate partition, meaining all of my settings are retained despite doing a clean install every 6 months :D
I often wondered if other people had problems with upgrades despite the fact that fresh installs worked great....

I do have a qualm with Windows 7 however.
I have a netbook running Karmic, a pc with Win7, and there are two other pcs in the house - a pc with XP, and a laptop with Vista.

Filesharing is set up properly on all of them - they can all access the netbook as they should, and the XP/Vista machines can access the Win7
HOWEVER, the netbook can only access the Vista and XP Machines, it won't connect to Win7.
The same thing happened in a Virtual Machine I had installed, ReactOS could talk to Karmic, XP or Vista, but not the host which was Win7.

It seems like it's blacklisting samba or something.
EDIT: Or not, Dolphin just hasn't been updated to use win7 shares properly, so I'm using smb4k (awesome, btw).

You don't have to remove Windows to install Ubuntu, Ubuntu can install itself on a different partition, in most cases right off the cd without any additional trouble.

You don't even need to worry about partitioning now. Ubuntu can install itself on the SAME partition as windows, without burning a live CD.

But then again, running Ubuntu on top of Windows is like have your car be pulled by a horse. It works, you can test your car, but you don't get the real thing.

It's not running on top, that would be virtualised.
It just uses windows' boot menu to load itself instead of GRUB.

As opposed to the car pulling the horse? Yes, you get your speed, and yes, you can make the horse run faster, but you'll kill the horse soon at higher speeds +/longer times of running, and the car's not using the distinct advantages of the horse [Better traction, better turning, reliable and efficient braking system, etc.] at any point. Sure, you could get rid of the horse, but sooner or later, your car's going to run out of fuel; going with the horse metaphor, chances are you're in the middle the wild west/desert/tundra/etc., and there isn't a nearby gas station - if you had the horse running first, you could use the car when the horse died to get another horse, or if your horse isn't dead, get it to help/let it rest, and continue using it.

This isn't Slashdot, we don't need bad, overworked car analogies.

Could you put that in the form of a car analogy?

Okay, so imagine you have one of the old Mini Coopers. One day it breaks down, so you buy a Hummer, shove the Mini inside of the said Hummer, then hire someone to drive the Hummer around for you while sit in the Mini. Just as you reach an intersection, you get T-boned by a supercharged Prius.

Okay, I was with you until "supercharged Prius." Your car analogy wouldn't be tongue-in-cheek, would it? Like taking a sports car to a race-track or something.
Did you get the number on that truck?

It's a Japanese car. Of course it's been supercharged. That being said, yes, I took the sports car to the race track.

Still doesn't stand a chance against white zombie.

Also: supercharged prius = gentoo?
