=/ I always wonder why people are so quick to dismiss newer bands. What about them is less interesting than the who or pink floyd or t. rex? I love the who; they're easily one of my favorites, but they followed a very standard pattern in the way their songs were written (likely because, hey, they helped define that pattern, but that doesn't change much). Pink floyd's awesome but there's other great prog. I never liked T. Rex that much because I felt queen did it all better.
S'pose it depends on your age. I can understand people who were alive during the 60s/70s/80s to not like much past the 60s/70s/80s. And when I was much younger, because my parents were like that, I felt that way too.
Now I love wolf parade and muse and radiohead and tv on the radio and the mars volta and agalloch and porcupine tree and iron and wine and the arctic monkeys and sufjan stevens and the klaxons and daft punk and e40 and jay-z. I dunno if that's ten, but that's bands that are active In The Now that are all excellent.

The Presidents... are awesome! I've been listening to them sense I was a little kid. The song "Peaches" has become something of an inside joke in our family.

Did I dismiss newer bands? No, I didn't. I just said the bands I happen to like, none of which happen to be from now. My age? I'm twenty years old! You'd be hard pressed to find more than 5 people on these boards older than 30.
The reason why all my bands are from the 60s and 70s is because that's my favorite era in music. Most music after that isn't as enjoyable to me. There's this annoying droning sound of despair that makes me want to crawl into a hole and waste away. And when there is music that doesn't have that droning, despairing sound to it, I may only like one or two sounds they have and the rest simply don't hold my interest. Indeed, I don't even like most songs of a lot of the bands I listed! I don't exactly go out to discover new music either, but simply osmose to similar stuff. A lot of music just annoyingly long solos that have a different style. Or is way too vocal-based. Or takes way too long for the song to get started. Or sounds too ...corporate. Or too happy. Or too emo. Or too serious. I just tend to like the tone of a lot of stuff from back then. It's hardly snobbiness.

soundgarden and audioslave are two completely different bands. just because chris cornell fronts both of them, does not mean they can be lumped together.

Wow. I'm about the fourth person on this thread to like a lot of metal after over 3 pages.

Anyways, in no particular order:

1. Tanzwut (I get looks when I mention them, so here goes: the band members were part of an authentic medieval music group called Corvus Corax before doing this. As such, it sounds like Rammstein WITH BAGPIPES. This even more awesome than it sounds.)
2. Therion (Note: most of what I like is basically Deggial and the albums after that, and Sirius B is in my top 10 albums of all time, with competition from Secret of the Runes)
3. Haggard (Tales of Ithiria was pretty lame though. Otherwise, the neo-classical metal concept albums rock!)
4. Rammstein (Popular NDH represent!)
5. Oomph! (Same as 4)
6. Maximum the Hormone (Newest album only. Think System of a Down with an insane Japanese singer)
7. Serj Tankian (Don't agree with a lot of his views, but his voice is pure awesome.)
8. Nightwish (My gateway drug for metal

)
9. Warmen (That guy from Children of Bodom made a supergroup. I can't imagine how he plays some of these.)
10. X-Ray Dog (Studio that produces epic instrumental music)
