Wow. Guys, this is why we have spambot protection.

Postby Internetmeme » Wed Jul 15, 2009 6:55 pm UTC

Holy crap, I just finished up the webcomic concerned, and decided "Hey! I'll check out their forums!" and I noticed that every single thread (read: every single thread that you will ever see ever) in the forum is full to the brim with spam (about 2-3 spamposts PER THREAD).

Now I know why we have spambot protection. I also noticed that one spambot there has 200+ posts. That says something about how many mods/admins are still there at that forum.
You are now breathing manually.
Also, you just lost a certain Game...

I guessed the forum was abandoned after the webcomic finished.

I found this thread particularly poignant.
Generally I try to make myself do things I instinctively avoid, in case they are awesome.

Another good way to protect against span is a 1 time registration fee.
SA did this, and it really helped with the quality of the forum. *
It also keeps out people that only register to troll around or want to yell at people for their opinions.

(*SA = Somethingawful, and quality is a personal opinion)

Sure, but it's also like joining a frat or the Masons or something. While charging a membership does insure that everyone there wants to be there and has an interest in keeping the place going and entertaining, you're also paying for friendship.

SA's is at least a one-time and not recurring fee, so they do get a nod for that.

I swear somebody on these fora used to have a banner that captured spambots and sent them on a loop. More things like that need inventing.

It's called "This link kills spam"

Link:
http://officeofstrategicinfluence.com/spam/

Also, they have a way of getting back at those meatspace spammers. Just tape the "Prepaid postage" envelope and put in a couple bricks. That will cost the meatspace spammer about $25 in postage that goes directly to the post office.

That's ingenious! I'll put that on any webpages that I might make in the future.
Edit: I'd hate to be the spammer that has to throw out the database that they spent months on.

The irony being that right now a spammer is on these fora posting all over the f*&$ing place.

My fave anti spam project is Project Honeypot not only do they provide junk emails, but also a list of IP and keywords often used.

Only for a moment and the moment's gone...[/tangent]

I just love the sites that get back at spammers. Also, according to the link I posted, the first spammer downloaded 1GB of fake addresses. I wish there was a way to embed viruses randomly in there so that the spammers themselves get viruses when they try to go there. They'll probably think that some adware escaped their adware folders, but they'll be wrong. Dead wrong.

Also, where is black hat guy when we need him?

I will probably never be the first to post a comic thread, but the other day I was the first one to report a spam post, which felt like an achievement.
Please note that despite the lovely avatar Sungura gave me, I am not a medical doctor.

Possibly my proudest moment on the fora.

You mean, can you have a .jpg in which nothing at all is stopping you from right-clicking and saving it to your desktop, and that is utterly meaningless beyond what you associate with it, and that though it was created by a guy with a funny colored name, it could have been created (and likely looked better) by any other member of the community?

No. You cannot have.

Sje. Yes, yes you can.
