Look up Raymond E Fiest at your local library and start with "Magician Apprentice". It should be easy to get into (I think, I'm not sure) but it isn't in any way dumbed down. Its also the beginning of a very very long series that has many books out already. You can read the first three and be fine and done, but you'll want to read all of them.

Of course, my opinion is most likely biased; I worked for Border's bookstore for years and was often disappointed with the pathetically few number of younger individuals who read strictly for pleasure.
