Basically I looked at the map and thought back to how I started out on the internet, where my friend made me sign up for Yahoo Games. Then I discovered chat rooms. The rest of it is somewhat out of sequence in regards to my actual travels across the web, but those are all the stops I made.

I started with those angelfire/homestead/geocities websites that were everywhere in 1994, most of which were devoted to anime characters or the likes. On the map, they wouldn't be an island assuch. Rather, each of those sites would be a tiny, putrid flying insect, and the combined millions of insects would destroy every other island. I come from the swarm.


Nowadays I mostly hang in the Isle of Webcomics, with some Wikimedia Island hopping, and some 4chan when the mood takes me.

I used to run with the various merchant vessels that traveled throughout the seas. Then one day, in a fierce broadcast storm, my ship went asunder, and I washed up on the shores of a desert island. I later found out that said island was just a little ?.com of the Compass Rose Shaped Island. I met with the locals and helped found a village devoted to online debating. I stayed there and helped it grow for about 3 years, before I decided it was time to leave. I built a raft, and set my sails for the ocean of por- I mean the rising sun!

I don't mean to ever doubt the omniscience of RM, or to be another complainer on the forum as to "why this island should be bigger or smaller due to official statistics" blah blah. But...

Idk if RM knows ancient Greek or not. "Blogipeligo" is obviously a play on "archipelago", with an a. Since the "blog" is really the only change, should the "a" stay the same? If RM's anything of a perfectionist like I am, I thought someone should bring it to his attention if he wanted to change it before publishing posters irrevocably.

In fact, if you consider the Cthulhu Mythos to be "Fanfiction", which by some definitions it is, the majority of fanfiction would not be on slash island.

HOWEVER, if we are talking about only fanfiction found on the Internet, then sadly a high percentage of fanfiction is to be found there. An equally high if not greater percentage is horrifically bad mary-sue self-insertion fanfiction.

Then there's the miniscule amount which is neither slash nor bad mary-sue.

... why do I know this? I don't even READ This stuff and I only have ONE unfinished draft of a fanfic. The closest I usually get are the 5+ Livejournal RP's that I'm a part of.

Like most latecomers I was born in the Icy North (still have a cabin up there) then I mostly followed the trail of my girlfriend across the Web. we moved to the Myspace kingdom while studying at Wikipedia U. Altough now we've recently got a house in Wow and are considering moving there permanently.

I'm not sure where you saw the link to that image, but on the parent page (socialham.com) there's an entry that reads..

"Funny image circulating today from Randall Munroe of XKCD.com (down for the moment)."

So, the host properly sources the image and rehosts it so as to not destroy xkcd's bandwidth.

There's one guy on fanfiction.net that I read that's actually an amazing writer - better than many published authors I've read. Whatever his real job is, he should quit and write full time. His unfinished Discworld fanfic is every bit as amazing as the works of the original author.

Anyway, I was simply wondering if all online fanfiction communities were on the Isle of Slash, as I don't see a specific other location for them.

I just had a disturbing thought. Are /. and the "Isle of Slash" connected? I sincerely hope not...

My friends constantly ask me why I don't write more fanfic (I roleplay voraciously - 11 characters and counting) The reason is that someday I want to publish summat, and while I consider fanfiction good practice, I don't want to devote my entire time to it. Also I'm deathly afraid that using fanfic as a crutch will kill my ability to ACTUALLY write. I've never been able to generate plot and I wonder if it's worse... [/endderail]

I do hope /. and isle of slash are not. that'd be bad. Concerning wether fanfic is on there... You know, I don't think so. Given that my primary venue for fanfic is Livejournal I'd say it's more of a diffuse thing. Particularly since some fandoms just don't get along and will kill each other on sight.

*e* You know you could probably make a fandom map. And then create those funny little tactical maps of battles that you see in all those history texts.
