Re: Top 10 Artists
My top ten (no order):
Straylight Run
Jimmy Eat World
Anberlin
Acceptance
Making April
Mayday Parade
The Morning Of
Quietdrive
Rookie of the Year
The Summer Obsession
For me, the only criterion for this list was that the artist had produced an album that, as a whole, truly moved me, made me think, and in some way affected my life. I love music and could name hundreds of bands that I love, but the ten above are special beyond just loving music. It's a combination of lyrics, music, and emotion that really gets me, and every one of these bands have that.

clearly. Cause really, liking ten artists only, or less, makes you some variety of retarded music sheep.
and those are not attractive to me.
edit: a three-man-orgy of all (presumably) straight men. Over music.
now that, that is attractive to me.

Well thanks, actually I had noticed that your lists and last.fm were much closer to things I know and like than most peoples and it's all pretty damn good.
Interestingly many gaps in my list end up being because I haven't discovered the band yet, not that I don't like it, even when the band is quite well known.

Re: Top 10 Artists
Hi dere. A longtime xkcd fan who had to join this forum just for this topic, so that's something. I'm a big music fan but I've typically latched onto artists that haven't ever seemed to be considered "cool". See, for example, this list of longtime favorites (read: I've been into these artists since my preteen years):
Duran Duran
Ultravox
Japan
Spandau Ballet
Naked Eyes
Visage
Human League
ABC
Scritti Politti
Heaven 17
But I've found out that some other favorites of mine -- either old favorites from my early childhood I abandoned in early adolescence but picked up again later or favorites I developed later on in adolescence -- have been more critically accepted. This is a list of the top ten from that list:
Frank Sinatra
Glenn Miller
The Kinks
The Rolling Stones
The Four Tops
Gang of Four
Buzzcocks
The Fall
Josef K
The Scars
And then there are my most recent "personal favorite" discoveries. Not that many because I find that a lot about new music disappoints me (I guess I'm still an old person trapped inside a younger person's body), but there have been some newer discoveries I've latched onto:
Alden Tyrell
Chris Meloche
Sally Shapiro
Division of Laura Lee
Franz Ferdinand (though I consider them more of a "guilty pleasure" than anything)
I know I've posted way more than 10 artists, but music is really important to me, and this is the shortest encapuslation of what I particularly enjoy musically. And I haven't even touched the especially obscure stuff; rare/obscure New Wave and disco is what I particularly enjoy and I could go on forever with *that*. Hence my need to register for this board upon my viewing of this topic.

I know that isn't 10... but my mind is kind of blank right now.

Yeah I know I have eclectic taste, but it was really hard breaking it down to 10, and I'm not even sure its right.

Hmmm.. No real order, my music is to varied to define them in an order of preference.
Say Anything
mewithoutYou
Bob Dylan
The Subways
Regina Spektor
As Cities Burn
Joanna Newsom
The Datsuns
Ben Folds
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!
.. That's sorta placed by my play count on iTunes. But Say Anything is definitely number one.

I've heard Sigur Ros and Mogwai from several people. Which, anywhere other than this forum, would normally surprise me.
My bands:
Coheed and Cambria [definitely number one, then all others are just random.]
Against Me!
Circa Survive
Dir En Grey
AFI
ムック [MUCC]
The Killers
Blaqk Audio
Tiger Army
[yes, i realize it's nine, but i don't have any other bands that are on the same level as these (aka i know all the words to at least 85%of the songs).]

Huh. oohal, that list is pretty much pure awesome, except for three artists I haven't heard of, which makes me wonder if perhaps they, too, are pure awesome.

1. Strapping Young Lad
2. Devin Townsend
3. Opeth
4. Tool
5. A Perfect Circle
6. System of a Down
7. Paradise Lost
8. Iron Maiden
9. Arcturus
10. Foo Fighters
Nice man, I'm a big Devin Townsend fan myself, he's a genius. I also wish I could fit Arcturus in my list because they're amazing as well...
There is no way i could pick just 10, but based on my current listening:
-Agalloch
-Devin Townsend (both DTB, Ocean Machine, and SYL)
-Ensiferum (and by extension Wintersun)
-Immortal
-High on Fire
-Amon Amarth
-Candlemass (or maybe Solitude Aeturnus...tough choice)
-Primordial
-Neurosis (or maybe Isis, or Cult of Luna)
-Enslaved
....I'm not happy with that, but it will do for now.
