In hindsight, maybe. But at the time, he was past the last defender, and only had to get a toe to the ball to score. You simply must take that opportunity, even if it looks a bit out of reach. Even if it's just a numbers game, you'll surely come out worse off in terms of missed goals, yellow cards for diving, missed penalties and the like.
I noticed also that the other linesman made a very good late offside call after a goal had been scored at the other end. Showing that it is perfectly possible to stick the flag out a few seconds after the event if you know it's right to do so.
