I have no idea what Zombo.com is, or what is was, but apparently it was hip and cool.

Like MSN Groups/Chat.

And Geocities.

And Tripod/Angelfire.

Yep. Whois says it was registered on 10 Oct 1999... the Wayback Machine's first record of it is in Nov 1999.

I'm pretty sure I first visited Zombocom in high school, so that would be maybe 2001 or so, and I know I was quite late to the show then.

A site that old and well-established, the unattainable would surely be unknown.

If there were only 44 people on the internet in 1999, I must have been one of the original 7 back in 1993.

BBS in Mosaic... anyone?

Same here. Perhaps it's a plot by Randall to finally kill it off, after all this time!

Oh, I'm so glad someone else remembered Zombocom. To this day, I still say "Anything is possible with Zombocom" just randomly in conversation. Unfortunately, most people have no idea what I'm talking about.

Alas, even Zombo.com is not immune to the force of many curious, dedicated nerds. Thankfully, neither is anything else.
Also, this comic made me spit tea all over the keyboard. Thanks Randall you realklkaektaoefgjskm,,.,,..,,,,,,,

Oh wow... This brings back memories. I think I first found zombocom when I was about 12 and first discovering the internet... back in 2000 maybe. Since then it's been one of my favourite past times: going on people's computers when they're not looking and setting their homepage to zombocom. Consider it a form of internet evangelism.

Anyway, I enjoyed the comic so much I just had to sign up and finally stop lurking on these forums :D

Thanks Randall!

Is Zombocom some kind of old joke?
A virus walks into a bar, the bartender says "We don't serve viruses in here".
The virus replaces the bartender and says "Now we do!"

I've never heard of Zombo.com.

When I go there I just get a multicoloured 'Zombo.com' on the page and a flickering Flash of several coloured circles (no sound on my computer today so maybe it's making noises).

Looking at the source there's also 15footstick.com which is no more illuminating. Is that it or did it used to be a different sort of site or something?

the best part is the voice that goes along with the animation. you need sound

Zombocom hasn't changed since it's inception

Why would it? it's perfect

(but yeah, sound is needed)

Ah, Zombocom. Such memories. Further back, I remember my first V22bis modem. It was so much faster than my old V21. I used to hang around on a BBS based in Surrey. Many wonderful hours were spent there. ATDT, baby!

OHHHH, that's what zombocom is .... all these years. There's a dot.
Thanks XKCD, for finally cluing me in to the meaning behind a few random smatterings of obtuse references by obsequious personages over the past decade.

"The unattainable is unknown"

Does that mean they don't know and can't get it?
Or does it mean they don't know how to not get it?

I prefer to think the former.

I've never heard of Zombocom, and I've been around the internet significantly longer than 1999. I remember Geocities, and Mosaic, and the buzz when Netscape first assigned the name "Navigator" to their browser, and Yahoo being hosted on Akebono, and usenet being much bigger than the web. I remember that Yahoo (which had twelve categories back then) was the original ubiquilink, *the* website that every single list of links on the whole web linked to. I remember Trumpet Winsock, and how you'd set up an "internet" program group with programs in it for usenet, email, gopher, finger, telnet, and tn3270, and then the www came along and everybody added Mosaic to their internet programs groups. Later Netscape came out with their browser and a lot of people upgraded to that. Then a *new* version of Netscape came out that introduced color attributes and stuff, and I remember learning HTML, back when it was still based on SGML, before anybody ever thought of XML. I remember when being listed prominently in Yahoo's "humor, jokes, and fun" category would guarantee you as many hits as your heart could possibly desire. But I do not remember any Zombocom.

I think this comic is more of a rip on how Social Network dramatized the way Facebook was developed than paying homage to Zombocom.

Remember that part where what-his-face is approached by his friend asking, "How do I know if that girl is single?" And then you get that lightbulb moment and he finally finishes The Facebook because that was the one final missing piece? Pure bullshit. My Yahoo! profile had my relationship status. In 1995. But we like to dramatize such things because the reality of developing a site is actually really fucking unexciting and audiences would be bored by the real hurdles. So, yeah, you could make the story of pretty much any website into The Social Network if you didn't give a damn for accuracy or truth.

I'm, honestly, a little freaked out. I've been resetting domain passwords to "!ZomboCom" this week. Very bizarre.
