0852: "Local g"

Postby s0merand0mdude » Wed Jan 26, 2011 5:05 am UTC

Image

Alt text: In Rio de Janeiro in 2016, the same jump will get an athlete 0.25% higher (>1cm) than in London four years prior.

Would 2cm make THAT MUCH of a difference in terms of angry athletes? I mean, don't they go by 6cm per height increase or something?

EDIT: Does he still hand-write these? How do you mis-write that poorly?

Laughing my ass off like I haven't in a good long time. Thanks, Randall! Hilarious.

The stupidest question I ever heard was asked by a friend of mine driving through Kentucky. He passed the biggest KFC that he has ever seen. He said, "Damn, what's this huge KFC doing way down here in Kentuck... Oh."

"...gravity can vary buy nearly half a percent...?" Randall, I thought you were better than that.

Well, would enough athletes have beaten their predecessors by 2cm to form a mob either.

Not to mention that said mob would have to include those who were bested, since there is only one current world record.

It would vary "buy" that much huh?
So how much did that half percent cost?

This spelling error bothers me greatly. Other than that amusing comic, that wasn't what I pictured when the first frame was talking about gravity math.

Boy it must suck to be someone like Randall and have such a nitpicky fanbase.

Technically speaking, there should be a comma after "Boy".

What about the increased distance from the center of the earth by centrifugal bulging? Shouldn't that cancel it out?

Damn, I was expecting the athlete's to fail to be able to vault up because he timed the release of his paper to coincide with the period of greatest local gravity at his residence.

Oh. Wow. Randall, have you done this on purpose? My life may just be over. An intelligent person that I look up to for intelligence wrote the wrong "by/buy"?

Please. Edit. Get this ugly stain off whatever it's on. Unless it was on purpose! *realisation face*

I gotta say, the comic could have done without the very last panel. Kinda ruins the joke.

I noticed the typo, but then immediately forgot about it because who gives a shit, and then was mystified by the first poster's comment about a typo.

I'm on the same boat. I only edited my comment in after somebody else talked about it.

same here, minus initially noticing it..re-read entire comic backwards looking for the typo... what's with all the concern over a typo, when there is CLEARLY a more pressing issue here.

Agreed. In fact, I'm pretty sure the joke would be clear enough without the last four panels.

For what it's worth I didn't notice the typo untill I came here, I was thinking about how timely this commic was since just yesterday;

Kilograms-force is as common a colloquialism as pounds-mass given that only an unbelievably small number of people have been in circumstances where the difference mattered.

He did-over DFS, which originally had the guy hairless in the last panels.

Haven't logged in for some time. I just came to mention that I'm surprised nobody else noticed the other horrible typo.

"How dare you cast doubt on our honor?"

Really, Randall? Putting a question mark at the end of a statement? Tsk tsk!

How dare you state that a period is meant to come at the end of a sentence starting with "(H)ow"? No pun intended.

It's basically, "How can you dare to...". So it needs a question mark.

Sorry. This guy is exactly me.

English is a crazy rule, and everything has exceptions. This is one of those times. Yes, it starts with 'How', but it's still a statement, and statements deserve periods(Or exclamation marks). I tried finding a proper source for myself, but I couldn't find anything more than random conjecture on the internet. While I'm good at rules of English, I'm not good at explaining them.

As a good telling example, though, try this: say the sentence out loud as a question. See if it even sounds right. It won't, because it's not a question :p.

P.S.

"TYPO OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG" -- person irrationally frustrated

/sigh

I possess the knowledge and intellect to recognize that there's a typo or two. I also possess the self-control, rationality, and sensibility to not caps-lock-complain, or state that "it hurts" when it clearly isn't causing physical injury, or spit forth some sort of "I'm disappointed Randall, tsk tsk" filth as if he or anyone else cared.

Actually, I think it's partly funny that the best written comic in a long period of time has a typo.

Also, an exclamation mark following a question mark?
Has Randall gone completely insane?!
