Sorry about the formatting issues, it's been a while. Mods can kill this one, I guess, even though the other one looks to have been about 40 minutes later. Also, seriously, what's with the timestamps? I posted this at midnight, it shows as 10:39 PM.

Sounds like Descartes' demon to me.

That post is made of aids and fail.

Actually, it's not bad, but you didn't comment on it at all. Also there is no link.

I was under the influence of a particular plant once upon a time, and had a minor freak out. I wasn't sure if I was hallucinating or not, and tried to type things into the computer or look odd bits of information up on Wikipedia that I hadn't seen before. And then I realized that I could just be hallucinating the new information and such. It was dreadful.

It's the first proper post, so yes.
Thank you, by the way, for taking the time to make that evaluation.

Clarification on Descartes' demon: the reason he (initially) doubted his existence was because he realized that a demon could be controlling all his thoughts and actions.

"I mean, what does a SQUIRREL know about mental health?"

A squirrel could tell you whether or not you were nuts.

... I created an account just so I could post that pun.

I call this forum ICT because IXCT looks like "ichthys" and confuses me. The troll would be the guy posting just above my previous post.

Despite being a clever comic, someone will read this and think this is clearly an offense against some far flung culture where their medicine men/women speak to squirrels.

In my opinion though, does it really matter? It's not like one's thoughts aren't heavily manipulated by hormones, and other bodily functions, let alone society, environment, and everything else out there, even if "everything is real".
I am NOT a snake.

Opinions discussed are not necessarily the opinions of the people discussing them.

Squirrels actually know a lot more about mental heath than psychiatrists.

If you are hallucinating that you are hallucinating you're still hallucinating. So either way you're not sane.

Oh, goodness! What a time for this to run. I had my first-ever lack-of-sleep hallucination just a few days ago. I had been caring for a dog recovering from surgery for several days, and was up most nights. As I sat at this computer, too tired to sleep, I stared at the little green 'power' LED at the bottom. As I watched it, it suddenly turned into a tiny 'Thomas the Tank Engine' face that then extended a bit out of the monitor and winked at me. My brain said 'Oh, how cute!'. About 30 seconds later, it said 'I didn't really see that ...'

Very strange. And at the time, I could not tell if I was awake or asleep, hallucinating, dreaming, or just crazy.

Clarification on that clarification: Descartes' "demon" ("evil genius" in most translations I've seen) was the last of the reasons he doubted everything else besides his existence.

He started doubting things for much more mundane reasons ("maybe I'm dreaming" being one of the first), and kept countering those reasons to doubt and then coming up with better reasons to doubt, the last of those being that maybe a godly powerful but malevolent being could purposely be deceiving him at every thought, even confusing his mind such that he always did simple logic and arithmetic wrong (e.g. every time he tries to add 2 to 2 he gets 4, even though "really" they should add up to something else, but the deceiver confuses his thoughts at exactly the right point every time he tries to add them so that he he always makes that same "mistake").

His existence (as a mind at the very least; his body still being doubtable) was the one thing he could find no good reason to doubt, for if he is doubting it, then obviously he is something, hence the famous "I think therefore I am" (which doesn't actually appear in the same work as the rest of this, but something similar to it does).

Poor Prince Alexander is still having nasty side effects from his spell casting days. Sure he escaped Mannanan, but those animal translation spells really do a number on the brain.

I remember once hearing myself whisper into my ear an answer to a question (Yes was the answer. I don't remember the question)

I was almost asleep when that happened. I was wide awake after that happened

Another time, when I was half asleep, I swear I heard the voice of a damned woman falling into the very bowels of hell. Turned out it was the heat vent

Seeing as how people are coming up with single examples of sleep deprivation related hallucinations, and not weekly examples... I should probably be getting some more sleep.

If you know you are hallucinating; I don't see see why the mere fact you are hallucinating would make you insane. Normally you hallucinate while sleeping (called "dreaming"). Sometimes you get spurious noise from your sense organs.

It is only when the hallucinations are so persistent that you loose your hold on reality that you become insane.

But if the only thing you're hallucinating is that your hallucinating, then that's a very minor feeling. Everyone has moments, I think, where they doubt their own senses. That doesn't make them insane. Any false belief does not make you insane.

I liked this comic. Good chuckle. I've never had a sleep-induced hallucination; the longest I ever stayed up was 28 hours straight. That was my 11th birthday party.

What a night. :D

Forgive me for being pendantic, but sane vs. insane is a legal concept and has nothing to do with psychiatry or clinical psychology.

Sure, but it still has an ordinary meaning in common talk in the same sense that guilty vs. innocent is a legal concept but can be can be attributed to everyday interactions. Forgive me for being pedantic about your pedantry, just trying to point out that doesn't really matter.
