0749: "Study"

Postby LucasBrown » Fri Jun 04, 2010 3:46 am UTC

Alt text: "Volunteers needed for a study on the transmission of urushiol from digital contact with thin strips of fibrous cellulose pulp."

I find this one mildly disturbing...

Slight spoiler.

Spoiler:
For those of you who do not know, urushiol is the substance secreted by poison ivy/poison oak, which causes itching and rashes. The alt-text basically says, touch poison ivy.
Unless otherwise explicitly stated, I not a recognized authority in any field, nor am I a credible source.

Well, there's urushiol on the strips of paper, to be more precise. But yeah, that's a pretty bad study....if you're allergic to poison ivy like I am...

HI JOEE

I can't remember where I read it, but there is a call out for people to be paid $80 for students to work out the best way to carry out a genital examination.

I think I like that one better than losing a kidney.

Almost, but it's actually better than that:
Spoiler:
Title-text: Volunteers needed for a study on the transmission of urushiol from digital contact with thin strips of fibrous cellulose pulp.
Title-text: Volunteers needed for a study on the transmission of poison ivy stuff from finger contact with thin strips of paper.

He put poison ivy on the paper slips for you to grab.

Also, OP is missing a period at the end of the Title-text.

This could be either a scientific study or a kidney-harvesting scam. Or both. We don't know. And that's the best part. Besides the fact that this was probably done by the Black Hat Guy. I'd Photoshop him into this, but I'm writing this on an iPhone in bed. At 12:35 AM. I'll do it tomorrow.

Have some open-source flyers. Substitute the contact info with the administrative office at your nearest campus. Or the poison control hotline.

Urushiol entirely optional.

On topic: the title text was hilarious... best study ever.

What's better is we do know.
Spoiler:
They wouldn't ask for the universal donor blood type unless they wanted to harvest your kidney. But I guess the study could be to see if people notice the obvious clue, then disregard it because they know (which would throw off the incorrectly done study?). Damn I think you're actually right ahaha

I did not edit my post to put in the URL after reading SorryBoringNickName's post; that edit came as I edited to put in the title-text/alt-text/magical-transient-text/whatever it's called. So it was, essentially, there all along.

What I thought was clever/silly about it is that anyone who signs up for the study must fail to recognize (or simply disregard) it's obvious potential to be a kidney-harvesting scam, thus if it IS a scientific study their test and control group (presuming both are drawn from a population recruited via fliers like this) will be biased by their self-selection.

Only way it'd work is if they were somehow measuring who read the flyer and which of them signed up for the "study", with a control group consisting of those who read a less suspicious flyer in a relevantly similar area; the population thus being "people who read flyers" rather than "people who sign up for scientific studies advertised via flyer", and replies to the flyer being the tested variable. For best results place multiple fliers of both types in a variety of relevantly similar areas.

Pfft. You can't trust ANYTHING about psych experiments. This may actually be a study to determine if the number of strips apparently taken influences the rate at which people take more strips, and it's only DISGUISED as a kidney harvesting scam...

It would be more immediately satisfying (if visually staking out the flyer) to use resiniferatoxin. But it is a bit expensive.

For other interesting microgram-level dosage contact effects: tellurium (rotting corpse breath for weeks) and/or LSD (20 microgram threshhold dosage).

Aaaaaaaaand now the FBI is reading. Hello FBI.
