Nawwww. *Sniff*

I remember the day I was in Tidbinbilla, at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex as they were tracking Spirit as it was landing... It's the closest I'll ever be to the landing of a space probe. It's more romantic if you overlook the fact that due to transit time of the signal, the landing actually happened 20 minutes earlier, not to mention on another planet.

Good job, li'l buddy.

So, how many 'sols' is that?

Yeah, I sent a link to one of the reports on Spirit's mission to boingboing, but they didn't use it. :-(

On the other hand, if Spirit survives the winter, it will continue with its new mission; helping us try to determine if Mars has a liquid or solid core. We need a stationary observation point for that, so, even stuck, it will still be doing science.

And hey, all we need is an occasional passing Martian, or dust devil, or Santa Claus to brush/blow/magically-clear the dust away and it may keep working for another six years.

As it happens, my screen background for the last two years has been a shot Spirit took:

Before this goes any further, I think we all need a good dose of

Of course, once humanity has reached Mars they can just haul these rovers out of whatever sand dunes they end up buried in, brush them off, repair what broken bits they have and just send them off on their way again, with just one or two upgrades maybe.

No sense in ignoring a valuable resource just because it's old. If it's still viable, use it.

It's a good thing I'm a horrible person, if I weren't I'd feel sorry for the rover right now.

I love this. It is beautiful and one of my new favorite xkcd's. It did, however, take a perfectly awesome night of d&d, Indian food, and Battlestar Galactica marathoning and destroy it into little shreds of crying over a machine on a different planet. :( so sad! I want to go rescue him personally now!

Now I feel like I should bring my Lego model of Spirit upstairs from the library and put it someplace more visible for a few weeks.

And I would vote to leave it there, a monument to the folks who did a great job designing and building it. To put it into perspective, say that your car had a design life of 150,000 miles. It would have to complete 3.24 million miles to match Spirit's performance.

With no maintenance.

Wow.

The official line was "90 days and 100 meters" (I'm not certain on the meters thing). Thing is, JPL had just had a few very public, very expensive flops. They really, really needed a win.

They put their best people on it. Every single team was determined that their part wasn't going to be the one that failed, dammit. So yeah, it went over budget in part because everyone involved overengineered the hell out of it.

Dammit! I was going to post that, but I thought it was a Penny Arcade comic!
And you already posted it!

As for the comic, this implies that somewhere in NASA is a very cruel engineer who told Spirit he was scheduled to come home.

You did a very good job, Spirit. You did what we built you for, and you did it better than we ever dreamed you could.

And you are home, where no-one has gone before. Someday, we'll come see you there! If you want, we'll fix you up, and you can show us around.

I wonder if little Spirit is sitting there stationary on Mars singing to itself...

I've seen the great heights,
Reminding me... that I'm alive,
I don't wanna die,
I don't wanna waste another day,
Or night,
I know there's something more,
Than what we're living for,
I see it in the stars,
I feel it on the shores,
I know there's something,
I know there's something more.

Get out of my head, Randall. I was telling a friend about Spirit and Opportunity's epic missions just yesterday. And about how hard it is to avoid personification of them.

So sad. :(

Those guys don't need to be brought back home. Becasue when we colonize Mars, we'll bring home to them! They'll be on display in the NASA public museum in New New York.

I totally agree.

Some time ago, there was a documentary on the Mars rovers on TV. It is just so awesome to see these man-made objects so far, far away (in human terms), crawling along, lonely in this huge and hostile environment.

This comic captures that very well.

This is one of the saddest things I've seen in ages. There should be a monument at NASA to commemorate all the probes and rovers that have served us well.
