On the other side, we have people saying 'EPIC WIN' with no justification. Explain how that is different.

Unjustified compliments = Polite
Unjustified insults = Rude
Unjustified offensive insults = pathetic + petty + rude
Justified either = discussion

I think it's supposed to be like attending a sporting event (something which I have no personal experience with, and I'd like it to stay that way (unless you count homecoming games, where I just stood around on the grass and talked to people.)); cheering is acceptable, but booing or insulting specific players is rude. Discussions of sporting events are something I don't care to watch, and I would much rather we moved things along so I can watch The Simpsons.

Jay's post on the "xkcd sucks" blog really hits on the main criticisms of this latest series. In particular, "I think Randall has it in him to write a decent comic. He was funny once, he's just become self-indulgent as hell (and I'd bet the constant love from his fans has a little something to do with that.)"

Talk about that one -- I was pretty amazed that the criticism on the "Overrated" blog made any sort of sense, and that it resonated in me. That was a quite good indication that, in my opinion, something was seriously wrong with the comic. Usually that blog is complete bullshit (I even sometimes suspect the posts are supposed to be awful, because they usually make the comic seem even better in retrospect -- and then again, they're just trying to be funny), but that time I hardly disagree with it at all.

But I can't say I've been turned "against" xkcd. I'll keep on reading, after all, it hardly takes away my time, and it IS a very unpredictable comic. That's what's fun about it. Randall still has a LONG way to go if he wants to put me off for good.

Whatever guys, this series of strips is just a thinly veiled attempt for Randall Munroe to have an electric skateboard race with Nathan Fillion at this year's Comic Con. Though I only have anecdotal evidence, Fillion is known to be gracious towards his fans, and putting out the strip now gives him enough time to get acquainted with an electric skateboard so as not to embarrass himself. You'd think long time readers would be hip to his machinations by now.

Actually, Nathan Fillion really owns an electric skateboard.

Yeah, I just registered to say that.

Anyway, I'm a huge fan of Firefly/Serenity. While the comic itself may need more work, it does feel great to see a Firefly/Serenity reference unexpectedly.

I gave him his own copy of all the parts (with of course notes mentioning where it is sourced and who was the artist) to keep and he signed the back page of mine.

Somehow I feel intensly satisfied.
