Makes me with that noise-canceling headphones would actually shut up the person that still tries to talk to you.

So good.

I love the reference in the alt text to this comic: http://xkcd.com/316/

Mr Black Hat goodness again! ^^

At least no one had died yet (or lived) in this comic. (just the speakers or maybe someone would after he plays the macarena)

I always hear cars pass by my house, in the middle of nowhere, with the music blasting. I'd LOVE to have a portable version of this mounted on a car and just blast people's speakers around town.

I wonder if there's anything illegal about doing that?

Maybe I'm stupid, but I don't get how that would disable the elliptical dish or the loud girlfriend. Even if she has a really deep voice...

Unless maybe it's just the music they play that is retaliation...(?)

Best idea ever.

Recently I was stuck in a left turn lane with a hoopty behind me and a little old black lady got out of the car next to the hoopty, walked around and got the hoopty to turn the thump down. I wanted to give her cake.

Heh. I thought I was the only person who thought of this.

I always envisioned the "replica signal" as being magnetic somehow, though. I mean, in theory you could tear a speaker apart if you pushed the coil far enough one way or another, right?

I'm assuming that's a pun on macarena meets macerate: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/macerate.

Too obscure. It's a spelling mistake; they happen sometimes.

I liked it, but I think the comic would have been better if the non-hatted man had stopped talking after the first panel.

Why would you assume that?

Why can't we live in a world where macarena just means macarena?

i wish the old lady upstairs had sense as this one: mine watches tv all night long. And she makes it loud. Sometimes I wonder if by pounding on the ceiling with a broom would give her a heart attack.

And I want one of those. I can see the happy moments of running around, damaging other people's property without having to touch it... ahhh! The love. <3

would your emittance have to be that high, im guessing these people are maxing out thier speakers so surely just a bit of extra power would kill thier speakers and thats all you need (ofc your revenge wouldnt work then which sorto sucks)

alternatively in my home town thiers an annoying high pitched anti-teenager siren (ironically im 20 and i hear it more than most of my mates), would it be possible to get that noise combined with my own speakers to cause trouble (you know produce a beat that exactly matches the resonance of nearby windows or make music louder). I remember covering how to do it in 1st

I haven't been able to decide whether it's "Black Hat guy" (one guy who happens to where a hat around) or Black Hats are just a representation of the attitude/personality (anyone meant to have that attitude/personality is drawn with a Black Hat). Any opinions?

Total win.

I once had a friend who lived in the ghetto. He would blast different things from his speakers to annoy the thumping drum players. He once said that the biggest freakout he ever got was when he played 'Duel of the Fates". I have been meaning to reproduce his experiment.

I think he is a specific character. If you follow what minimal story arc there tends to be, in an earlier comic, http://www.xkcd.com/72/ the character with the black hat aspires to be a classhole. This latest comic is yet another way that this specific character who wears a black hat is showing more creativity than the common asshole. This shows that he indeed is a recurring and single character.

Seconded.

Awesome comic. We get our share of bass drive-bys in our neighborhood, so something like this would be veeery convenient.

I love doing that! I usually use "Ride of the Valkyries" or "Lux Aeterna (from Requiem for a Dream)." I'll have to try "Fates" next time!

I remember there was a Batman cartoon when I was like 10 where the villain had a device that canceled out all sound in the immediate area. I'm not sure exactly how that enabled him to do dastardly deeds (maybe blow up a bank vault without making noise or something) but it was a lot less satisfying than shutting up loud bass from cars :)

I want that so bad. Sometimes my roommate and I have people drive by our dorm with the bass up so loud that it shakes things in our room.

One day I hope their cars fall apart, like having doors just randomly fall off.

im pretty sure, because the couple upstairs are the source of the sound, it would just cause them, or at least their voice boxes, to explode, or possibly just the dish which is acting as the amiplifier... it would be interesting to see what kind of interference patterns you would get because of the two amplifier dishes... or is the car stopper one just a huge speaker... but even still, it would be interesting to see what differences in size or shape caused which kinds of interference or decline in signal power. also, the guy in the black hat, has been stated by Randall as being "closely based off of Aram from men in hats."

Wouldn't a phase-shift just cause destructive interference, and not resonance?

Another spin on the comic that makes man-in-hat ever more the bamf: he's not the one operating the machine. He tells the other guy to operate all the switches for him. If his neighbors accuse him of using a device to destroy their amps and annoy them with undecipherable latin music, he'll now have the defense that he literally didn't do it.

MrOrange and MathMagic. That's exactly what I was wondering! It would still have a positive effect (as in partially muting the sound). Then again it depends on the phase shift. Maybe a different shift would create standing wave between the "Black Hat Device" and the "Bass Thumper"?

My guess is that it would be loud and annoying, in retaliation for her being loud and annoying.

Although it could do some damage if he put it at the other focus of the elliptical dish...
