I'm up for a road trip!!

p.s. I don't care what was said in that other thread about how sometimes comics can just be fiction and they don't need to be based on real life. I'd bet money that someone suggested to you that you should watch what comics you put up. I definitely agree, FUCK. THAT. SHIT.

It's always been my opinion that, if whether or not you get employed comes down to things you write in a webcomic, it's probably better off for both of you that you don't get employed there.

Of course, I don't run a moderately popular webcomic, and I work for a company that might indeed fire me based on my internet comments, so I'm not one to talk.

At any rate, the random shift between science fair projects about sex and personal philosophy is one of the reasons I love this comic.

Haha, nope. Although I half expected it with the last one. But no. 'tis still such a thing as fiction.

I think this might have to be my new favorite...

Also, in regards to the scroll over text, I believe we are all naturally creative, but some personality types adapt better to society's rules of routine. Creativity is in all of us, but routine destroys the full potential of that.

The real trick to surviving is finding your own little place within society which allows your creativity to flourish, but also allows you to function as a part of society. This webcomic is a great example.

Oh, and I could go for a road trip right about now... :P

Yeah, a couple of comments on the rollover text:

- Does the text end with an ellipsis, or is my browser simply cutting it short?

- My grammar-nazism requires me to complain about the use of the passive voice. (I know, I know, FTS...)

Right-click -> Properties to see the full text. Firefox cuts it off after a certain extent.

Bah. Proscriptivist. There's no reason the passive voice can't be used.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but if you're going to correct people's grammatical assumptions, you might want to learn to spell "prescriptivist". ;)

wisnij - you're right: it's not gramatically inaccurate. It's a style thing. I write mostly for newspapers, where conciseness is key (and no, this doesn't carry to my unpremeditated ramblings on online forums :P). Also, the first link doesn't work.

saladin - thanks for the extension!

Postby randomatom » Mon Aug 28, 2006 10:46 pm UTC

I think the "careful what you post..." rule applies for those who may be discovered to be simpletons, ignoramuses (ignorami? I profess ignorance... and laziness, given how easy it would be to look up from here), or bigots. I don't see any of the above coming from xkcd.

As far as I can tell, however, most of the "content" being produced on the web (v2.0+) comes dripping off of the fingertips of fourteen year olds, who may come into a heap of regret in a few years, since your average fourteen year old matches at least 1.5 of the above criteria.

This comic reminds me of something that happened in the second week of my current job. One of the computers had a rather boring background so I loaded it into Paint and drew a little stick figure standing in the corner urinating and put it back as the background. At first he was going to be fishing but I couldn't draw the rod right.

Anyway, then the manager took me aside the next day and told me I'd broken something in my contract that should result in instant dismissal — I'd 'tampered with company computers' or something. But they kept me on anyway.

But anyway, this bookstore I work at lets me wear a skirt even though I'm a guy. The contract says I can wear a skirt — it doesn't say I have to be a girl to wear a skirt. So I wear a skirt. So I don't feel like they're curbing my individuality too much.

I don't really remember any of my dreams. I'm sorta starting to remember them more, but I still only remember bits and pieces, like that one of them involved an incredibly inconsistent Chris Cornell.

The text is wonderful!

This is my favorite comic in the world... ever! In fact, this was my first exposure to xkcd. It was posted on a blog I like to read. You eloquently put into words what I've been feeling but could never express.

You, sir, are awesome!

Dreams got me a girlfriend :) We were @ a dinner party and she told me about an xkcd comic. I sent her some Buddhist texts, and then a few xkcd comics I liked. The rest, as they say, is history :)

Dreams also went around in the workplace. It was posted up on a few walls. One of them for months, much to management's disgust, and the employee's lack of awareness.

Good times.....Good times.....Thanks Randall :)

This was the comic that finally pushed me into joining the xkcd fora. While I've wanted to sit down and look around, maybe join in on a thread or two, I've felt a little too busy until now.

Oddly enough, this fun little webcomic, only a small part of my day, has inspired me to re-think the world and those around me, all over again. Over the past couple of years, I'd lost most of my ability to "be weird" and feel comfortable with standing out. But this comic, xkcd (I wasn't gonna write the first 3 words, but I didn't want to capitalize just one letter of the name, nor did I want to start a sentence incorrectly, odd), has encouraged me that there are other people out there who THINK and FEEL and are WEIRD as hell. That's awesome, that's hopeful.

So, thanks Randall. Your comic is helping me act like a kid again. :D

Nonono, not a kid. Like a very advanced grownup who hasn't lost a sense of fun. See: ballpit. Being a kid is just an excuse for getting to have fun and not internalizing all the values of society like the rest of the world has.
At some point, I will remember to sig quotes I find amusing or something.
