While it is nearly impossible to cut out all the talking, it can certainly be optimized and minimized for efficiency.

Some of us are more committed than others on this.
Others seem to think that rambling is friendship even if the other is pointedly trying to read?

Dunno about friendship, but my parents clearly thought that talking to people who are obviously trying to read is a required part of raising a child.

I've never experienced what Cueball does in the comic, but I know that one of things that is hard for me about going to social things is that I know I will have to be, well, social. For example, I like contra dancing... except for the whole dancing with people thing. Or, I like singing in a choir... except for the whole singing among a bunch of people thing.

That's the joke.

Or it was until you ruined it with your talking.

I might have, but, y'know, I was worried all my opinions were bad.

A good chunk of extroverted people seem to feel that talking is an affirmation of their social value—if nobody wants to talk to or listen to them, then it means that nobody wants to pay attention to them at all. They also project this assumption onto others, believing that other people will feel ignored if not engaged vocally.

We need anti-social occasions.
A-party where people stay apart-y.

Maybe that's why Quiplash is so fun?

HEH, 'reminds me a friend's birthday party I went to where everyone quietly read books and enjoyed party snacks. There was a little chatting (including several incidents where I had to ask permission to share highlights of silly cat poetry from the book I Could Pee on This), but mostly we just kinda hung out and read stuff quietly. It was rather nice.

I do English Country Dance mostly, but there's enough overlap that we also cheerfully import contra dances, some American Squares, and assorted other closely related dance types. I've also been known to call from time to time.
