1551: "Pluto"

Title text: After decades of increasingly confused arguing, Pluto is reclassified as a "dwarf Pluto."

A new xkcd on a Tuesday? That's two monumental things in one day.

Obviously most of those aren't going to hold up with the IAU (except the New Netherlands part, don't want to upset the Dutch). If I recall correctly, there already is a category called "Plutos", defined by sharing the 3:2 orbital resonance.

Wait.

I swear that there are more things there than the first time I looked at the image. Is Randall updating this in real time?

If so.... awesome.

Or maybe I need more coffee. I swear that dinosaur wasn't there earlier.

Everyone says it's a heart but I see a big X. I am dead certain Pluto really was, in fact, the Planet X we were looking for all along. I am trying to link to a relevant video to prove my point (a clip from the original Duck Dodgers Looney Tunes short) but I'm being flagged as spam. You'll just have to take my word for it.

The "PLUG (inflating/deflating)" almost makes me fall from my chair: the history of what we know about Pluto is marked by a shrinking "estimated diameter"... until a couple of days ago, where it was increased by some kilometres.

Also, the "full text of the wikipedia article on pareidolia"...

The chocolate and vanilla frosting areas have given me an awesome idea for cookies at our next club pot luck. Unfortunately, this club is decidedly not geekish, science minded, or tech friendly and nobody will get it.

The plug for inflating and deflating also made me spit my tea.

I think the tadpole is meant to be a reference to that.

Personally, I think it needs at least 3 more USB ports, each a different kind.

I'm slightly puzzled: I've seen the same image on NASA's site in both colour and monochrome. Am I right to think that it's a high resolution mono image that's been coloured using lower resolution colour data? That's more or or less what they say here, except that it says "The color image has been combined with lower-resolution color information [...]" (my italics). Is that just a typo?

No. The LORRI camera, which takes the high resolution photos is black and white only. The RALPH instrument takes lower resolution color
photos. So APL 'colorizes' LORRI photos with RALPH data.

The monochrome image: http://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/thumbnails/image/tn-p_lorri_fullframe_bw.jpg - 1942x1942, while the colourised image is 1042x1042, not sure what the full capability of each instrument is though. The New Horizons twitter feed was mentioning the prospect of continuing on for a flyby of one of two Kuiper Belt targets (30-50km bodies) should funding be secured, I think it will be now they've had mission success on the flyby.
