Are there supposed to be images inside the triangle? All I see are empty rectangles.

Everyone who's not seeing anything in it, or who is seeing unicode placeholder glyphs, doesn't have any fonts supporting the emoji block.

It's worth noting preemptively that emoji are not an Apple thing. They're a unicode thing created to allow transcoding between Unicode a bunch of different old proprietary Japanese cell phone text encodings, which included a bunch of their own different emoticon glyphs alongside kanji and kana and such. When iPhones started selling in Japan, Japanese people complained that they just saw garbage when other cell users sent them emojis, so Apple added an emoji font, and then figured why the hell not include that with all iThings, and OSX, and that's how the western world discovered emoji. But it's no more an Apple thing than 日本語 is an Apple thing.

The "01F647" should look like this and the "01F467" should look like this. But I don't get anything either, because yes I have installed the U+1Fxxx Emoji fonts, and most of the alphabets in the Supplementary Multilingual Plane, but I have Mac OS 10.6.8 and Chrome 42.0.2311.135. This xkcd is only for people who have really new organised sand.

If you hit the "Ask" button over and over again, the JavaScript will occasionally use Emoji in the 'normal' Unicode range. Just now I got a snowman ⛄

Chrome + Windows 7 is showing them correctly.

Chrome + Android too.

If you are using Linux and don't see them, you may need to find a font that support those symbols.

... or that Randall should include a css web font that contains the required glyphs...

I tried chrome and firefox, some unicodes can't be displayed. But I can copy the character and search it at http://unicodelookup.com/ to find out what it is. Maybe Randall should include Segoe UI Symbol font in his css file.

It works for me, but what the hell is the point? You type in text, which is ignored, and it gives you a random meaningless symbol in response. I don't get it. It's even less interesting than an actual 8-ball, which at least was able to answer yes or no questions (usually incorrectly).

Yep, it works for me on Android 4.4.2. It did not work on an old Linux OS I tried. Like others have said, it's an installed font issue.

alvinhochun wrote:... or that Randall should include a css web font that contains the required glyphs...
Absolutely. Plus this doesn't really need to require Javascript. The code is pretty simple. It's possible to make a server-side version as backup. Too bad.

LockeZ wrote:It works for me, but what the hell is the point? You type in text, which is ignored, and it gives you a random meaningless symbol in response. I don't get it.
Indeed. I'm not getting any clever matchups. There doesn't appear to be any crowdsourcing aspect to this one. Why was this "special" comic released; any occasion?

Could this be a comment on the inclusion of emoji in Unicode? He's done Unicode comics before.

I can confirm that it works fine in with Firefox in Xubuntu.
(So it proabably works fine in standard Ubuntu too.)

Probably more to do with your OS and which fonts you have installed than your specific browser.

Yeah, thanks for the package, dash. It didn't work on my Ubuntu 14.04 in any browser until I installed it. That font also makes them mono, which kinda looks better I think.

I kinda like this. It's not a gag or a strip exactly, but an odd coincidence of things that makes an amusing toy. It feels like a weird interactive installation in a contemporary art museum somewhere.

Edit: The output URL is attached to the question input, but the reverse is not true. The same question still gets a "random" response, or a subset of them.

Well, the original lucky 8-balls give a random answer to a yes/no question, and hook into our human urge to find meaning in the random. This 8-ball goes further in that it gives a random answer to an open question. However, giving such an answer in English is basically what the Turing Test is all about, i.e. not something you'd knock up in javascript for the sake of a webcomic. So enter the emoji: this allows the open question to be "answered" in an enigmatic way using a random combination of pictures, and leaves it up to the human to find meaning in it. (Now I've described it like that, I realise that it's basically what Tarot is all about).

dash wrote:sudo apt-get install ttf-ancient-fonts

I didn't need this, but "ttf" sounds like the demonstrative partner to the interrogative "wtf?"

But because he didn't, I now have emoji working everywhere, thanks to dash's suggestion of the ttf-ancient-fonts package.

If Randall had used an emoji-containing web font, dash wouldn't've needed to mention ttf-ancient-fonts and I wouldn't've had the incentive to install it — and I'd've continued occasionally seeing placeholder hex codes in various places on the web and in Tweets, in the naïve and wrong belief that my system didn't support them.

I'm sure it is random but I've had some weirdly appropriate results - like a pair of lips when asking about love.

Odd coincidences are bound to happen with a large enough sample size of course, but always spooky when said odd coincidence happens to happen to you...
