1244: "Six Words"

Title Text: Ahem. We are STRICTLY an Orbiter shop.

I believe that's the second time KSP has been mentioned on xkcd.

Paralel thread here.

I always thought the six words were: "Star Trek stuff is still cooler."

Kerbal Space Program (KSP) has an official twitch where they stream once a day, if anyone is curious about learning more about this game.

I personally recommend watching a streamer named EJ_SA (who is streaming live if anyone is online right now) as he has some of the coolest KSP rockets around
Call me Teddy. I'd edit my username if I could.

Pff. That's not even a proper interplanetary transfer. Not unless you're making the burn with an ion engine running for months in KSP. The Eve gravity assist should take place 180° from the initial interplanetary burn.

The amusing part here is that half of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory are actually playing KSP. I'd give you a link, but the <5 post policy won't let me, though I'm sure you can find the Penny Arcade Report article for yourselves. Okay, not the most reliable source in the universe, but it's at least plausible.

Can someone (mod?) rename this thread? It's #1244, not 1233. Thanks.

Woooo! Finally, Orbiter gets a mention in xkcd! This has really made my day. Thanks, Randall! :D

That feel when everyone's obsessed with some new game... and you're still enjoying Duke Nukem 3D and Half Life 2.

Half-Life 2?! Man, I'm still not done with Half-Life 1.

Half-Life 1? I'm still struggling with no life.

Man, how do I keep finding new games to become obsessed about.

I learned that you don't want to detach your rockets until they're COMPLETELY out of fuel. Otherwise they tend to fly up and ram into the rest of your ship. It usually means you are having a bad problem, and you will not go to space today.

This? And I can agree with the last part of the article, I've learned a lot about practical manipulation of momentum by playing ksp.

At this rate, Faster Than Light will probably get a mention soon.

I don't know why those six words wouldn't be acceptable at NASA ... I've heard "It works in STK" often enough.

I tracked down your rebuttal to this comic, but every time I try to link it, the forum spam filters stop me... Go to Google and search "penny arcade report kerbal". First result should be the one you are looking for.

If I'm reading the diagram correctly, I think that the outer planet shown is supposed to be Jupiter (it's the only planet with enough gravity to bend a trajectory that sharply). In terms of being a practical flight plan or not, the only issue I really see is the really close solar pass, which would require such a massive heat shield that it would likely negate most of the benefit of making an engine burn at such a deep perihelion.

There's a sophisticated filter that blocks users who didn't read the posting rules from posting links. But the google route worked, thanks!

I've had Kerbal Space Program bookmarked for some time, ever since reading about on xkcd, but hell if I know when it was mentioned. Maybe it was just the forums? The bookmark is right after THE UP-GOER FIVE TEXT EDITOR and I Am Not Good with Boomerangs Randomiser (which I found after the c4 boomerang image was added).

It was on the ADD title text.
