You'd have to slog backwards through seaish quote chains in the earlier newpages, and by the time you've reached the beginning of the chain you might have read the initial query a dozen Times already.
Well, you'd need to keep track of each version of the quote in the quote chain, and simply look it up instead of re-reading it. Those values, of course, would be saved in a Times table.

And with that, and at 5300 at that, I'm Poped.

What other uses would there be for a Times table?

You move quickly downwards by jumping multiple stairs at once.

And that with both hands full? Not what I'd think of as "carefully".

Happy RNM, Jose!

It's not the first time a bsta character disregards the warning about stairs.

I was reassembling a bike yesterday. It's easier to work when the bike is hanging from above.
Before, I was hanging the bikes on the garage door.

I'm sure I'll miss some things, but here is some ketchup.

Happy 5300, Jose!

Molpish elemolpy, balthasartist. And the ggh van was steakish. :D and I see that you're very resourceful!

Thanks for posting the new Othercomics, GnomeAnne. And I'm so glad to hear that you talked to addams. I've tried her a few times in the past few days and hadn't gotten hold of her, so I was getting worried.

That was some very enjoyable M*stard, ED.

I've forgotten what else I wanred to comment on. But it was all awesomeful.

I had a small but unfortunate bit of zancleanism. I had a jug of distilled water in my loft (for my CPAP machine which I'm really bad about using, but that's beside the point.) The other night I noticed the plastic jug was partly crushed. I went to pick it up to see why it was like that, and found it had been leaking water all over the carpet. Of course this was during a foggy spell instead of one of our heat waves, so it didn't an dry, andnow the carpet smells funny and will probably have to be torn up. :(

But on a happy note, I'll be getting a visit from our hamply! Squee!

Preview edit: and I got the "At least one new post" message, and there was a post from balthasar. :)

Edit to fix speling erors.

Eternal Density wrote: […] I researched and found what I think was the correct [othercomic] to link to if it was 2011. […]

As you saw, explainxkcd provides dates for (most) othercomics. To get an idea for where to start, I've been using the formula:

Othercomicnumber = ((Unixtime/754) - (2005.52-1970)) × 3×52.3

viz.:

Code: Select all

 # Convert a time (UNIX epoch) to the approximate number of an xkcd
 # that was published around that date.
 sub utime_num
 {
   my($dt) = @_;
   my($rv);

   $rv = $dt / (75*75*75*75);     # Seconds in a year (see xkcd 1047)
   $rv = $rv - (2005.52 - 1970);  # Convert from UNIX to xkcd epoch
   $rv = $rv * 3*52.3;            # There are 3 xkcd's per week
   $rv = int($rv);

   return $rv;
 } # End of utime.num

This could be improved quite a bit, for example I don't know why it uses 52.3 instead of something closer to 365.25/7

Things like this can appear in the decoded message many times. It's when some of the pages are updated and others are not. That happens if the message is being read and decoded during an update.
My bot only accepts the message if it is still the same when it's checked next time. That's ok if the pages are updating normally.
It this case, the incompletely updated pages stayed in this state long enough for the bot to accept it as a correct message.
Your bot which checks if I have received the message was most likely still working correctly, because only the updating was mustarded if I understand correctly.
Apparently, your bot only checked for this "20170713.0209 UTC 1073 " and not for the whole message so it decided that I already have it and moved on to 20170718.1042 UTC 1077.

This cannot be fixed on my side. My bot can not know if what it decoded is correct or not.

I, FOR ONE, WELCOME OUR NEW WIP OVERLORDS

Postby lmjb1964 » Wed Aug 02, 2017 12:50 am UTC

I finally had some Time to go back and read svenman's otty. Steakishly done, svenman! I was listening to Abba's Greatest Hits recently, so I could easily sing right along with it.

I also enjoyed ucim's otty response.

Finally spoke to addams, whew! I saw that GnomeAnne had spoken to her recently, but I had tried her a few times and got no answer. I was started to get worried that something else had happened. But I talked with her yesterday, and she sounded great, just like her normal self. She's feeling much better, and she really loves her new place. She no longer lives in her Box with hardly any heat and mice and spiders and who knows what else. She has a new raftcastle and loves it. Yay! She always says what a huge difference the help she received from everyone made. It helped her get to this place. And now I don't have to worry about her out in the country with no heat. :(

I am currently Waiting for a certain hamply to come to town. They've been taking a leisurely trip up north, as they should, and it's a beautiful dip for a drive along the coast, so hopefully they're having an awesomeful Tim. I shall report back, with pictures should some materialize.

Interesting, balthastatistics! I've always liked posting-data charts; we don't get enough of those these dips.

Thanks for making these ones for the ongtimes!

True, it's been a while since we had some good data. Thanks, balthachart!

And thanks Laura Mae! Really molpish to hear about addams too, and her improved housing situation, and glad to hear our contributions helped. So what is that going to mean for her future financial needs?

I'm not sure. We still have some funds left, and she said she's for now. She and I will have to talk about that at some point in the near future. With her health issues she can't really work. I don't know. But I will for sure keep everyone updated.

I got to see HES in lmjbtown! Squee! He's traveling across the U.S. with a group of friends he's known since high school. They were a lot of fun. We had dinner and went to the Boardwalk to play games. It was a great time. I took not one picture. :roll:

A great Tim was had by all! Hugh should have been there. I mean, you should have been there.

Poems.com posts a poem of the day. Today's poem is startlingly RELATED, mentioning as it does TIme, otters, flooding, and the world being washed away. I literally can't believe how RELATED it is:

Which way is he going?

If anyOTTer comes to the Australia of the US, and the associated tourist traps, I mean amusement parks, I'm not far from there.

But first you have to put down the things you were holding.
You need your hands.

That is wowterfully RELATED indeed.
My favorite RELATED snippet:

But now it is night
and I don't know where
the day has gone,
and I try to remember
what yesterday felt like:
to not feel edge,
to not feel the waters,
to not know that the joke
was never a joke
but was our language...

Ooh, I may find myself much closer to lmjbtown here soon, for an as-yet-determined amount of time! I'll have to let you know what those plans are as they get fleshed out.

I'm looking for some help with computery stuff.

We want a webpage (app, really, but for Windows phone) that can play short audio clips in response to button presses.

But, we want there to be some apparent randomness to it, so if you press the Yes button, you might get, "Yes" or "Sure" or "OK" (you get the idea.)
We'll have more than just Yes and No buttons, but those are probably the only ones that need multiple ways to answer.

I'm pretty sure this is doable, but it's outside my current knowledge. Anyone have some spare knowledge to impart?

Thanks all.

News time!

My wife finished her degree in May and has found a job in California, about an hour south of the Bay area. She is leaving in just a few days to drive out there. I am just starting to look for work myself, and with our situation it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me to leave my job before first finding a new source of income, but long story short I will eventually be following her out there.

Having never used a Windows Phone, much less written an app for one, I couldn't help you with that. However, I could make a quick webpage that could do what you want and host it (and could probably even make it portable, ie you'd copy a folder to your phone containing the main .html file and the sound files, and open the .html file in your browser, and be able to click the buttons from there). Only thing is, it would have to wait until next week, as I am quite busy helping my wife prepare for the move. If you remind me on Wednesday or so I'll try to come up with something then, if noOTTer has beaten me to it.

Fair deal! Congrats and good luck! Put your new address on your resume as soon as you can, employers are terribly afraid of relocations.
