Just the last newpage tells me that re-acclimatizing is going to be an uphill climb. (Perhaps one like unto that from a salt basin to a former coastline.)

Clicking links in posts plunges me into random unfamiliar Times past. It gets disorienting.

Control-click is your friend. (And failing that, control-back.)

In other news, GHWFP has a new -FS. Not completely clear at this time what goes in the - as Wolpy food and wolpy favorite food are still funded by LWFP. Still it is good news. Both GHW and GHWFP appear to be adjusting well. This is GHW's first experience in an actual work place.

Ooh - that sounds exciting! Is it full-Time? Sounds like that would be quite an adjustment for a young wolpy....

Heh, treeish. :) I never read it like that before.

Rule110 wrote:Ggh, where can I find the original of that image search? It looks fascinating, and captivating, and likely unbearably poignant. In other words, very One-True-Thread-Ish.
Here is the original post, which links back to the seaish png which aluísio is hosting at chirping mustard.
I'm very sorry to say that you won't find yourself therein. :( Though, on second thought, you are so naturally inclusive, perhaps you can see bits of yourself in a lot of different places.

What a great way to show these!

I'm guessing that there's a fair few of these that you can't put a name to. If anyone doesn't mind being spoiled a bit as to what the actual elements look like, they could look inside your spoiler and help ID the pieces without finding out exactly where they are. (It would be like an OSHiTT.)

There are five or six pics here that I'd consider incomplete. Two of them could be stuck together to make a complete avatar. With another two, I think if you widened and/or lengthened your view just a bit, who was being represented would become apparent.

In 8 newpix, bsta will be >Find yourself a suitable vehicle.
Bicycle time? Or train? Or something new?

GREATEST OF ALL TIME

Postby Eternal Density » Tue Apr 25, 2017 5:07 am UTC

Oh hey, I'm GOAT twice in a row!

I don't think I ever wrote down that during my camping trip there was a time where we drove past some grapevines, so I sung the appropriate song :D

New OtherComic.
At the time of this posting GLR had decided to leave the image file uncompressed.
The image is 10679x3577 pixels, and is named birdwatching_huge.png

That seaish original image for the Othercomic on raptorwatching is remarkable. I knew that GLR had to be drawing at a higher resolution and sizing down for publication, but I didn't realize just how much so. That's a fifteen-times reduction from (10679 x 3577) to (712 x 238). Assuming this was also the case for Time, (553 x 395) would recall an original resolution around (8295 x 5925) for each newpix. That would certainly have made molpy-hunting much easier!

...now I desperately wish to see an original-resolution newpix, maybe more than I've wanted to at any point in the past four yips.

...we could watch all of Time in that resolution. The most seaish experience, like IMAX for newpix.

...we could call it the OTSea...

Find yourself a suitable vehicle.

You can choose between a bike and a bike.

What will your choice be?

I'm hoping b picks the bike.

I deserved that donutting.
Not sure about the wiki comment spam; how do we remove that?

Unfortunately, the bike does not appear to be one of the available choices. Indefinite-article bikes only.
Though once the choice has been made it is quite likely a bike will then become the bike. Or even b's bike!

I was just thinking about all of you after we passed another April 1, and then realized that I somehow never connected Hamilton's "Wait For It" with the OTT.

I haven't really listened to any Hamilton songs before, but I downloaded this one after you mentioned it and I really like it. Wowtreeish character storytelling. Plus the chorus reminds me very much of k.bookbinder's infamous "voices":

The voices say unto me, they say, "Wait for it."

Re: How about some music please

Postby balthasar_s » Tue Apr 25, 2017 6:10 pm UTC

I should have returned to bsta drawing.
But i did not.

The music generation distracted me once again.
Some time ago I wrote that I found the music from the game Zone Runner.
Together with one of my sisters we tried to find the notes for it.
I found that it is a module which is good news. When I open the file in a tracker it looks like this:
Spoiler:
Image
I can see all the notes!

Do you know what happened next?
Can you guess?

The cool thing to do would be to put these notes into my program to make the device from my FFS play it.
Rewriting all those notes is a task which you quickly don't want to do anymore.
And it's even worse.
In the file there are multiple so called "instruments" defined.
a note played with another instrument sounds differently.
This affects even the pitch.
The same note can be higher or lower on a different instruments.
So I would not only have to rewrite a note but also see which instrument plays it and transpose it accordingly otherwise everything would be aut of tune.
That's too much.
But I still wanted to do it.

i decided to use some automatic help.
I downloaded another tracker which allowed me to copy the text externally,
So I could make a file which looks like this:

Code: Select all

ModPlug Tracker  XM
Orders: 0,1,2,3,4,5,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10,11,11,12,13,14,14,14,14,15,16,17,17,17,17,18,19,

(that's not the whole file. Also, the lines are so long that the code box doesn't display them correctly)
All notes suddenly became one octave higher. That's because this program counts them from 1 and not 0.

And I prepared another file, with the required transpositions for each instrument:

Code: Select all

1 GA4 AA3
3 AA6 AA3
6 DD5 AA3
10 EE7 AA3
13 AA4 AA3
19 AH4 AA3
20 AH4 AA3
21 AH4 AA3
22 AH4 AA3
23 AH4 AA3
Line "1 GA4 AA3" means that note G#4 played on instrument 1 sounds like note A3 in my program. Which means that notes on instrument 1 should be transposed down by 11 semitones.

How did I get this data?
I wouldn't be able to reliably do it by hearing.
Instead, I connected the audio output to an oscilloscope and observed the frequencies.

When I had this I wrote a program in Perl which helps me with converting the notes to the format of my program:
modconv.pl:

Code: Select all

#!/usr/bin/perl

#modconv infile setfile channels patterns > outfile

my $inpath = $ARGV[0];
my $setpath = $ARGV[1];
my $channels = $ARGV[2];
my $patterns = $ARGV[3];

my @chsel;
my %ptsel;
my %trans;
my $setfile;
my $infile;

my $pattern=-1;
my $convert='';
my @sheet;
my $row;

@chsel = l2a($channels);
%ptsel = l2h($patterns);

if (open ($setfile, "<", $setpath)) {
   while (defined(my $line = <$setfile>)) {
      if ($line =~ /^[ \t]*([0-9]+)[ \t]*([CDEFGAH][CDEFGAH])([0-9]+)[ \t]*([CDEFGAH][CDEFGAH])([0-9]+)[ \t]*$/) {
         $trans{int($1)}=n2v($4,$5)-n2v($2,$3);
      }
   }
   close ($setfile);
}

if (open ($infile, "<", $inpath)) {
   while (defined(my $line = <$infile>)) {

      if ($line =~ /^Rows:/) {
         if ($convert) {

            #temp
            print "\t//".$pattern."\n";
            print formatsheet(@sheet);
            print "\n";

         }
         @sheet = ();
         $row=0;
         ++$pattern;
         if ($ptsel{$pattern}ne'') {
            $convert=1;
         }
         else {
            $convert = '';
         }
      }
      else {
         if ($convert) {
            $sheet[$row] = row2val($line);
            ++$row;
         }
      }
   }
   close ($infile);
}

If, for example I enter the command:
./modconv.pl zrexp zrset 2,3,4 0,1,2,3
I'm telling it to use the input file "zrexp" and the transposition settings file "zrset". And to combine the notes from channels 2, 3 and 4 on patterns 0, 1, 2 and 3 and convert them to the format of my music generator program.
This what the program outputs then:

I assumed that each row in the mod file is one 1/16 note long. More realistically, it should be one 1/32 note long but my program doesn't have such a thing. So instead I did this and increased the tempo which gives the same effect.

Why would I want to combine the notes from channels 2, 3 , and 4?
Look at the screenshot (first spoiler in this post).
channels 2, 3 and 4 play the same mellody but it's split into 3 so that when a note starts you still hear the end of the previous one.
I had to bring it back to just one. I only have 4 channels available and I didn't want to use 3 of them for the main mellody.

By using my new perl script multiple times on different channels and patterns (and doing some manual corrections) I finally half-automatically made this:
rnr.zip
(1.03 MiB) Downloaded 52 times

(i didn't put the repeat instructions in it yet. If I did it could signifficantly reduce the sheet size, especially on sheet2 and sheet3)
I think that this sounds a little better on the device than in the wav file.
The music from the zone runner game which I converted actually comes from the mod archive, here, title: remember, author: stalker.
The game author used that in his game.

before I can enjoy the latest installment of balthatunement. I'm trying to keep my many OTT downloads restricted to my old sand, but I haven't gotten to spend much Time on it lately.

I have to tell y'all something about me that you wouldn't know from my posts: I haven't embraced NZ spelling as much as my writing suggests. I mean, I do kinda enjoy tossing that u into colour and labour, but mostly I'm giving in to peer-pressure from the spell-correct. The sand knows that I'm supposed to be speaking NZ English, and so when I end a word in -ize it throws down that red underscore, and I give in and change it to -ise. In that last paragraph, it objected to my second l in installment, so I deleted it. But the American in me found that just way too epsilon, and took a stand this Time.

Gack. The painters at my neighbours' were sanding heavily today. Little white flecks of lead-based paint snowed down upon my driveway and walk. I wonder how much of it will invade our home and the soil of our yard....

When I saw all the stuff falling through the air, I asked him if he was sure the paint was lead free and he examined the wall and assured me that it was. I didn't trust him, so I went out and bought a test kit. I gathered the specks that had collected at my windshield wipers, dabbed at them with the test swab and it turned pink.

When I confronted him with this new info, he told me that most of the paint was fine, but showed me a small patch that he told me was leaded. He told me that it wasn't dangerous to inhale (which I believe to be totally untrue) and that we'd be fine as long as we didn't eat it. I am not happy.

I made sure the Little Wonder took a nice long bath afterwards. I'll try to keep her from touching any surfaces around there until it rains. Can you send us some of your rain?

ggh, that sounds awful! And I'd hope that in NZ it's also illegal. I know that here in the states, the mere mention of a possible lawsuit would be enough to get them to bend over backwards to clean up their act.

Keep us posted, and if nothing else try to find a temporary home for the Little Wonder in the meantime. Not sure how effective that'll be long-term, since it'll spread onto your yard, but hopefully the rain washes it away.

In the UK that would fall under the remit of the HSE (Health and Safety Executive), who would be able to penalise the company. Is there a kiwi equivalent?

Sadly, I think it was legal. I emailed my neighbours about it (they were at work at the time) and she had a word to the painter who reported "he followed all the protocols of collection and disposal as per the eco guidelines." I have the impression that all he had to do was put down a dropcloth and vacuum afterwards. I don't know if I saw him use a dropcloth or not, but what would it matter? His sander was throwing it all airborne anyways.

On the plus side, because my house is on the back half of a subdivided property, we've got 25 meters of path between the driveway and the house. I think our house ought to be okay at least for a while. The first problems are car, the Little Wonder's bike and scooter, mailbox, driveway area, and stairs/railings.

That still doesn't sound right, in the US you are required to take precautions against airborne lead paint, such as either a wet sander or a sander with an attachment for a HEPA vacuum. Sounds like the regulations they were working towards may have been intended for interior work, where you seal off one room at a time for easy cleanup.

In any case, glad you're taking the precautions to keep the two of you safe.

I worked as a painter for a while, and this guy sounds like he either doesn't know what he's talking about, or is making things up to stay out of trouble.
Lead paint smells differently than latex or oil based paints when it is sanded off, but "examining" the wall is not a good way to tell if it's lead. When lead paint gets old and starts to peel, it generally comes off in small square chips, where latex paints usually come off in longer strips. But not always.
And inhaling the dust is one of the best ways to get lead poisoning.
Also: he didn't think to check if it was lead until after you asked about it? Not very smart.
Wait For It.

I think molpying sideways was also mentioned at one point (although the associated image seems to have vanished).

Seems like NZ has similar precautions.
Yeah, that's an interesting document. Thanks for finding it for me!
3. Where wind is likely to scatter or spread dust, it may be necessary
to use a wet sanding or chemical stripping method instead of a
“dry” removal method, or delaying preparation until conditions are
improved.
seems pretty straightforward, but maybe because it's under the heading "Recommendations" it isn't followed? I don't know. More questions for the woman from the council when I see her....

addams wrote:But; It would wash the Lead into your water ways.

Yes, I will do that. Maybe not today. They are pouring concrete for their front yard today, and I just want to keep us away from all the churned-up stuff floating around.

No, I don't want the lead to go into the waterways or the soil, but I don't really have a choice anymore. I can't use a damp cloth on the driveway, the path or the soil where it has already landed, and that is a far greater area than the car, mailbox, and railings. (and, gah - I just remembered the kiln that I've never gotten working... have I hopelessly contaminated it?) The path, sadly, is a straight-shot, all stairs or downward slope down to my front door. I wonder if I can make a little dam....

GnomeAnne wrote:I worked as a painter for a while, and this guy sounds like he either doesn't know what he's talking about, or is making things up to stay out of trouble.
I think there was a bit of both. When I told him about the test, he showed me a patch of sanded paint with a certain colour showing through (I forget which) and explained that most of the house had already been stripped and was fine, then he showed me another sanded patch with a different colour and told me that was leaded paint he'd sanded earlier and that it sure gunked up his sanding disks. So, I guess when I asked him if the paint he was sanding had lead in it, he chose to interpret that question as referring to the paint he was sanding right at that moment. I'm standing there with a four-year-old at my side - what a dick move. But then, there were paint flecks all over his face, so I think he was really not very concerned.

Confession: I used to go swimming at Ithaca Falls when I went to uni - loved it. I never wondered if being downstream of an old gun factory was a problem. Can you say, "Superfund site"? The Little Wonder has definitely changed how I think.

And... it's only fair to say, I might be overreacting. All I really know is that I bought a lead test and some flakes on my windscreen failed. Maybe there were five bad flakes total and I happened to get lucky/unlucky. A woman is going to come from the Council on Wednesday, and she'll be able to test another spot or two with hopefully a better kit. She's going to assess how likely it is that any of the particles get ingested. She doesn't consider inhalation or contact to be a problem.

Heehee, at first I thought you were calling the Little Wonder a halfcue, and then I got it. :)

Bouncing around xkcd, I came across the following post from somebody else bouncing around twitter. I thought of our baobabish balthaciser.

The video explains how to create a program in (x86) assembly language, using just opcodes that can be printed (correspond to normal ASCII), and the hoops he had to...er... jump through in order to cover for the opcodes that were not available (because they were nonprintable). Fascinating.

It would cause the above kitty to do the above neck-thing. :)

Oh, and as a bonus, the end of the video has a link to this.

Sure hope your lead issues get solved ggh. BlitzGirl has it right: CAVE. I suspect that with some hosing down it won't be much of an issue, as the contact is brief. But it is worth a perusal of your local legal options. Randalspeed to that.

A cue is the height of Cueball, about 1.80m. A halfcue would then be around 90cm, roughly a yard.

So then I did get it. Mostly. In that I figured she was referring to the size of Cueball, since his height is the canonical unit for length.
