2015 Secret Santa by Suzaku - Game Over

Postby Suzaku » Thu Dec 03, 2015 1:27 pm UTC

2015 Secret Santa by Suzaku

Mod: Suzaku
Speed: Turbo (4-RL-day days) - Pseudo-Nightless (Night actions must be sent in advance during the day prior - backup and conditional action submissions are permitted).
Bastardry: Possible naive roles or other concealed mechanics. Possibly very poorly balanced.

Standard Rules:
Spoiler:
Posting rules:
  1. No posting in this thread unless you are playing in it.
  2. No talking about this game except in this thread or in an appropriately titled spoiler in the discussion thread.
  3. No player may read discussion spoilers about this game unless they are dead. There are no spoiler reading roles.
  4. No editing your posts. For any reason. At any time.
  5. Do not lurk! One post per real-life day is the recommended minimum. Consideration will be given for weekends.
  6. No, really - don't lurk! This is a Turbo, and I reserve the right to modkill any player who fails to make at least one post on a game (not IRL) day, unless the day ends early.
  7. Players lurking excessively will be replaced or, if replacement is not possible, modkilled. See above.
  8. Any player who is modkilled for rule violations (not lurking) will have their role retconned to ‘Survivor’ meaning they will automatically lose.
  9. You may post in thread during the day phase but not the night phase. It is night when the mod posts a day-end post (this will not be before the official deadline, but won't be much after it, either), or a hammer vote is cast, in which case it is automatically night, whether or not the mod has made a day-end post. Note that this means you may not post content after a hammer vote.
  10. You may not post, nor quote directly from, any PM from a mod. Paraphrasing is fine.
  11. You may not play to lose, or act in a way that is clearly against your win condition.
  12. You may not use encryption systems in order to communicate privately or circumvent these rules.
  13. This is a game; it’s meant to be fun. Personal attacks or other offensive behaviour towards other players will not be tolerated.

Deadlines:
  1. In general, days will last for 4 RL days. Nights will last for as long as it takes me to process night actions. Weekends will count as half time.
  2. Adjustments will be made to accommodate holidays, or for other reasons if the mod deems it necessary.
  3. In-thread deadline announcements from the mod override these rules.
  4. Requests for extensions will be considered in exceptional circumstances only.
  5. Deadlines are 'soft', meaning that posting and voting may continue after the deadline until the mod calls night.

Voting rules:
  1. Votes and questions for the mod must be posted in bold and on a new line, like this:
    Vote: Suzaku

You do NOT have to unvote to change votes, but it makes things easier and will be very much appreciated if you do. You can unvote in bold and on a new line, like this:
    Unvote (Suzaku)
    Vote: Ukazus

  2. When someone gains a majority of the votes, they are automatically lynched and it becomes night, as above. Posting content after the hammer vote is not allowed, even if the hammer vote was accidental.
  3. If the deadline is reached and no player has been hammered, then the person with the most votes at the deadline will be lynched.
  4. If the votals are tied, then random.org will randomly select one of the tied players to be lynched, unless all players are voting solely for the tied players, in which case there will be no lynch.
  5. You can vote not to lynch anyone by casting a vote for "NL" or “No Lynch”. “No Lynch” will be treated exactly the same as any other player for determining votal results, except that "No Lynch" always wins ties.

Death rules:
  1. You’re alive until you are hammered in a lynch, or a mod tells you that you're dead, by PM or in thread.
  2. Once you die, you may no longer post content in this thread. You may post death flavour or a ‘Bah! You killed me,’ post that reveals no information.
  3. On the other hand, once you are dead you may read the spoilers in the discussion thread.

Private Message rules:
  1. You must include the mod in any PM you send related to this game.
  2. You can ask the mod questions by PM (at any time) if you'd rather not ask in thread.
  3. No PMing other players concerning this game unless your role specifically allows it.
  4. Any night actions must be sent by PM before the end of the day prior. If sent as part of a factional chat, please indicate the action in bold on a new line, as with voting. If you don’t do this and I miss your action, tough.

Game Setup:
Spoiler:
This is a closed set up.
This means that I will tell you only what I think you need to know about the setup. You may ask me questions, but I may not answer.
I will not lie about the setup

Setup: Every player sends in a role, which is then randomly assigned to another player. The mod assigns alignments randomly to roles but alters the roles as necessary to maintain game balance. The mod may add factional abilities in addition to submitted roles. Most types of roles or powers are allowed: Christmas/holiday-themed or not, day actions or night actions or passive abilities, etc.
Claiming the role you sent in is strictly prohibited. If you do this you will be immediately modkilled with extreme predjudice.
Note that this includes hinting about it, giving information about it, saying 'I sent that role' in response to a claim.
And for the benefit of some of our sneakier, more legalistic players: I will modkill you even if the information is false, so don't try to 'reverse claim' either :P

Restrictions on submitted roles:
No roles that specify a win condition or would only work with certain win conditions.
Dead is dead - No roles with resurrection powers.
No flavor-writing/influencing roles.
No roles causing false role-reveals - hiding details is fine. (Naive miller/Naive godfather roles are acceptable, but the reveal will include both that the role was a miller/godfather and that the player did not know. Ditto sanities)
No spoiler-reading roles.
Roles may be edited (perhaps severely) due to game balance, if the role doesn't follow the guidelines mentioned, or if the mod has some other reason. In the case of editing, the original author will not be informed.

Sign-Up Instructions:To play, sign up below and then send the mod a PM titled 'Secret Santa Role' using the following template:
  • Role Name - self explanatory
  • Role Description - this is what the player sees, and should ideally include flavour
  • Role Mechanics - this is an exact description of what the role does. Any elements of the role that are kept hidden from the player should also go here.
[/spoiler]
Signups will be open until Saturday morning next week (2015/12/12 10:00ish JST, 01:00ish UTC) after which the game will run with however many sign up.
If the signups go over about 15ish people, I will probably ask for a co-mod.
Signups are now closed - I will finish twerking the roles over the weekend, and the game will probably start Monday evening my time (JST = UTC+9)

I'll play, but I'll need a bit of time to figure out a role and flavour etc. Is the flavour expected to be Christmas themed?

No, it does not have to be Christmas themed. Anything (within reason) is OK.

Hmm, might be able to sign up for this. My classes are done on the 12th and I'm off for 3 weeks after that. Should help me balance out the faster day cycle. I'll think about it. Might just go with being a replacement.

Christmas time had come again to the small, sleepy town of Xkcdia.

But amongst the joy and cheer, the gift giving, the Christmas-dinner eating, the carol signing, and the just great times, there was also extortion, poison giving, murderising, and just being really, really bad.

So, what are you all waiting for? These victims aren't going to lynch themselves, you know.

It is now D1; get on with it!

But yeah, not much to go off in terms of setup hints, so I'm going to opt for questions instead.

Would the next player to post please kindly rank the following alignments in order of most likely to least likely to be included in this game:

Cult
Druid
Jester

Loving Father
Mafia
Mafia (2nd faction)
Mime
Militant Atheist
Mod's Bastard Child
Other (please specify)
Serial Killer
Survivor

Would the next player to subsequently post please then hazard a guess as to the alignment of the previous poster based off of their list.

I'd guess that SirG is one of the top three (town, mafia, SK), since they are almost default factions, and so unsurprising that they are at the top or something random not in the list, since he put "Other" so far down, despite currently playing in a game involving an other faction (aliens in Smalltown).

On a completely unrelated note:

I don't care if I was ninja'd. I'm posting this anyways.

Hmm, I don't think anyone would put Mafia first. So I don't think that rules out SirGabriel being Mafia either way. It's interesting that he thinks that a survivor is slightly more likely than a jester, lover or a cult. Not sure what the overall meta is here nowadays with role/setup preferences, but I probably would have put those up higher on the list. I also would have to wonder how he differentiates between Mafia and Werewolf as factions. To me it's just a name that can be used interchangeably. And if you think there's moderately likely to be a werewolf faction in addition to the mafia faction, why do you also not think it not at all likely then that there is a 2nd mafia faction? I feel like if there's a mafia faction then it is highly unlikely to be a werewolf faction as well and would be more likely to have a 2nd mafia faction instead. And if it's a werewolf faction it'd be more likely for a 2nd werewolf faction rather than a mafia faction.

I'll go off on a lark and read too into that idea at the moment and say that I think he's a werewolf.

Many thanks SirGab and Jimbob for your answers.

For giving such a ludicrously cautious response to my question. Anti-town roles are typically far more reluctant to make bold statements early in the game, so this is a serious vote.

SirGabriel, I have a few more questions about your list if you don't mind answering:
1) Please describe how you imagine the 'werewolf' alignment operating, in the absence of any further information?
2) Were there any alignments you've never heard of before? If so, how did you determine their place(s) in your list?

Ninja'd: question 1 partly pre-empted by cf, but I'd be interested in hearing your views anyway.

Hmm, I don't think anyone would put Mafia first. So I don't think that rules out SirGabriel being Mafia either way. The difference is in the name. I think it is possible but unlikely that there are werewolves instead of mafia, much more likely than there being two separate mafias (which I can't recall ever seeing outside of Hangafia).

I'm guessing that because these roles were sent in, and not created directly by the mod, we are much more likely to have "standard" faction names such as Town, Mafia, Mason (if applicable), Cult (if applicable), etc. In order to make everything fit into general descriptions that were sent in.

I just answered 1: no difference but the name.
I've never heard of Loving Father, Mime, or Mod's Bastard Child, so I put them all near the bottom. Having two factions of mafia seems unlikely in a game this small, and I don't even know what a second town faction would mean, let alone how you could have one with this few players, so those went all the way at the bottom. I've never seen druids played before, and I don't really like the role and suspected Suzaku might feel the same way. I put "Other" near the bottom because of the "please specify" part, which I took to mean a particular other faction, and I don't think there are any particular factions not on the list that are likely to appear. If by "Other" you meant all other factions combined, I would have put Other right below Cult.

ninja'd: I agree with freezeblade, that's part of why I put mafia near the top and werewolf much farther down the list.

The role of SDK in this game will be played by Misnomer. [/soapopera]

I am of the opinion that Misnomer's role is one of the more exotic ones on the list he gave; since breadcrumbing has become popular lately, that would be the place for it. I am with SirG on being unsure of the description on some of those exotic ones (Mod's Bastard Child, really?)

Vote: Vytron

random vote stage still in progress, despite Misnomer's statement.

Hmm, mhm mhm. Sounds reasonable.

@ Vytron. I had a similar thought to you, and I was feeling that Mod's Bastard Child was probably Misnomer's role.

Cool, many thanks for the swift responses.

As far as werewolves go, I suppose my main confusion is why you'd send a second scum faction right to the bottom when a functionally equivalent werewolf faction occupies a relatively middling position on your list. Granted, two mafia factions might be a rarer thing on the forum these days, but it's hardly beyond comprehension and certainly a lot more likely than, say, a Militant Atheist.

Incidentally your unknown alignments work as follows:
Loving Father - wins if a named player other than themselves is alive at end game. Often has a protection or a martyr ability.
Mime - what I based Druids off of. Essentially a team of jesters with a factional roleblock.
Mod's Bastard Child - an extremely bastard role which wins by the mod acknowledging said player as their child before they die.
