A Power Word

Postby Benitosimies » Sun Feb 24, 2008 6:28 am UTC

When I'm lifting it helps if I say a Power Word.
(A power word can be more than one word for my purposes.)
I have a couple.

The first is one of the Rune Poems for Uruz, rune of strength (for real):
Dross falls from brittle iron
The reindeer often runs across the hard snow

Another one is King Piss!
That's the Power Word. King Piss.

And when I get done running I yank my earbuds out of my head and I'm all like "End the simulation!" all exhausted because I've been imagining a mammoth hunt or what have you.

What are your Power Words, invoked for mighty deeds?

I listen to Rocky Road to Dublin by Dropkick Murphey's when I need that extra push running. Or for lifting, Rage against the machine is great, although the ultimate best i've found is the song Sex and Violence. I'm not sure who its by. But its great, considering I'm lifting weights for one of those two purposes. Sometimes both of them.
... with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.

The Exploited, I believe. It's on the SLC Punk soundtrack, and the whole thing is great... if you like a dash of punk every once in a while.

I don't say a word... but there's definitely an underlying mental state that is quite distinct, which seems to serve the same purpose. Sometimes I might mutter something indistinct if I'm really working hard.

The reason I would kill penguins would be, no one ever, ever fucking kills penguins.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk

Repeat the whole song.

Not a song, but Rudyard Kipling's "If". Especially the second half of the third stanza.

Spoiler:
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!
