not the first time, nor the last time i've heard that. Basically, i actively refuse to use labels like "Black Metal Post-Apocalyptic Core" or "Progressive Avant Garde Neo Classical Metal". Metal isn't meant to be pretentious.

Stop giving it labels that make it something to be talked about in coffee shops over warm chai tea.

Because you are the authority on what metal should and should not be? Or, could it be? No, surely not! You're passing opinon off as fact.

I don't much like the crazy amount of 'labels' things get nowadays. I especially hate 'indie' and 'indie folk' (How many folk bands are signed to major labels?!), but that doesn't mean I can state that it goes against what it is 'meant' to be.

@Phenriz: Who bothers with those labels aside from the bands themselves, anyway? When it comes to genres, I think it's useful to be able to be able to give a quick rough description of a band, and a I think the simple genre terms such as death, doom, black, thrash, sludge, gothic, etc are very effective like that. Some simple subcategorisation is useful, too (e.g. Death doom vs Funeral Doom), but really, it's not that important. Not worth getting yr knickers in a twizzle.

I understand where you're coming from, Phenriz, because a lot of bands will make up their own genre name to make themselves sound cool.


For me, these are the categories I split ALL metal into:

Good Metal

Bad metal


Genres that I may use to describe.... "tech" and experimental are bands like Psyopus, Behold... the Arctopus, and the odd Dillinger Escape Plan song. "Doom" metal is the slow droning stuff like Sunn 0))), Boris, Lagarddrone. Shred metal is anything band that plays retardedly fast and does it well. Grindcore is things like Waking the Cadaver, where breakdowns are more important than anything else. Other bands, like Lamb of God, I would just call "metal." Occasionally you'll run into "folk metal" (see a few pages ago), or "theatrical metal" (yay Sweeden).

I think there is a slight difference between categorizing something as "such and such kind of metal" versus attempting to give the person a general idea with descriptors such as "grindcore."

I've noticed that too (both the blatant generalizing of metal listeners and the band differences). I think it's cool that the two are taking the genre in different directions, much preferable to almost every American band being copies of existing bands.

Yes, I would agree certainly that American metal bands seem to be more preoccupied with rhythm... that being said, I don't see a problem with European or American metal. I like both!

Just saw this, thus the late reply. My answer is, I haven't a fucking clue. Also, does it matter what label a piece of music is given so long as I can rock out to it? It's handy for seeing what kind of thing someone is into, but going past that it is not much use.

I adhere to the European system. Lamb of God is not really metal. They're fun, but not Metal. What's you're favorite subgenre of metal? I think i'm more of a Black Metal guy, with tendencies toward symphonic. I wish I knew Folk Metal better.

I'm big into Dillinger Escape Plan and Municipal Waste at the moment. I listen to Meshuggah quite a bit too, but they're a bit different to most metal bands as they're pretty much all about the groove.

I think my favorite subgenre of metal is blackened death. Naglfar, Dissection, Zyklon, Behemoth... I like folk metal too, but more like Korpiklaani rather than the really over-synthesized stuff.

You guys are a lot more exclusionary than I am... Lamb of God not metal? They may not fit into some of the subgenres they get labeled as here, but not metal at all?

Some purists argue that LoG's hardcore influence is greater than their metal influence, and so are on the hardcore side of metalcore. Either that or just say all metalcore isn't metal. I tend to subscribe to the former.

And I do loves me some Unexpect. I think I prefer In a Flesh Aquarium over Utopia though. It's seriously a great album. I used to listen to the intro over and over again because it was seriously whoa.

I've already gone over my love of NIN in another thread, but I love metal far more. Though I also have a soft spot for Devin Townsend, who is just awesome.

Favourite bands (in no particular order)

Strapping Young Lad (Devin again; fast and noisy and just downright awesome)
The Crown (brilliant death metal)
The Berzerker (superfast grindcore insanity)
Emperor (The complex guitar work on later albums gets me wet)
Fear Factory (I tend to think of them as a more metal version of NIN)
Iced Earth (Like Metallica with more 'rawr')
Amon Amarth (I dunno, they're just great)

There's so many other I could put down, but that will suffice for now. Hmm, I'll go nab some youtube links as well, see what I can find.
