I need a Game Recommendation

I regularly play civ4 with 3 others, but it would be nice to have an alternative. (For instance for the days when we aren't complete) we sometimes play C&C generals but that isn't much fun anymore.
What might be nice is something we could play as an team, so are there any good coop games? The play time can be limited (so it can be a storyline and doesn't have to be a match based game). No shooters. And not lol.(I have played lol, but after a thousand games or so I lost interest.)
It doesn't have to be coop, another game for 3-4 player would be fine to, but that ,as far as I know, only leaves shooter, mmos, dota like games and strategy games. And I would like to play a non strategy game for once.
And racing I guess, a racing game with power ups and stuff could work too.

If you don't mind a strategy title for the coop recommenadation, Men of War: Assault Squad is probably one of the most fun coop games i've played in a long time. If you haven't played MoW before, it's a pretty hardcore little RTS/Tactics games. It's not traditional RTS in that there's no base building or anything like that, but it's got great MP coop missions.

Otherwise how about Terraria? Probably the game i've lost the most hours to in the last few years, usually while playing with friends and exploring or building crazy shit.

Other types of strategy games are good too. I will try Men of War: Assault Squad out, thanks. And will look at youtube videos of Terraria because after reading the description it might be quite fun, or not.
Edit: Men of War is quite fun, but it took us till today to win our first map on normal. (We only played one map on easy, normal is more fun.)

I now a copy of Freelancer but that's not really the kind of gamin experience I'm looking for. I definitely want to play a Space trading and combat simulator just more Star Trek like. I really wish that game like Star Command and Faster Then Light were already out and not just concepts. But basically I want something like that. Any suggestions?

P.S. And maybe a game like X-com but not so ridiculously hard.

Everyone utterly adores Star Control 2, available in free open-source form as The Ur-Quan Masters. Reckon that counts.

There's also Starflight, but there's no convenient modern version of that.

I hear fabulous things about Sundog, originally for the Atari ST, but whose remake teeters on completion.

Maybe Wing Commander Privateer, or one of its remakes, Gemini Gold or "Privateer Remake" ? Or how about X-Wing Alliance?

Might as well mention Elite and its numerous sequels and remakes while I'm at it.

And there's Escape Velocity Nova, but Ambrosia Software has been quite stubborn about so much as dropping the price on that one.

Am I getting anywhere here?

Not sure if you can play a pay to play game, but EVE Online is set in space and has combat, trading, mining, and a load of other activities. Beware though, it's very unique. It's not like any other game. Eve has a huge meta game, and people take it seriously. Also, there are no rules against scamming/ripping people off in eve, it's a complete sandbox with very little rules. PM me if you want a 21 day trial.

Since people that promote eve tend to forget to mention it: Yes it has combat, but mechanically it's incredible boring. If you want to fight in eve by no means do pve, because there nothing hides how dull it is. And mining consist of doing something else while from time to time emptying your cargo hold. Depending on the area you might have to look out for attacks, but mining itself is below a facebook game in interactivity. Trading was fun and people seem to have fun with pvp and fighting over control of systems with their guilds. It might be a good game for you, but I recommend not doing any activity in eve which doesn't involve other players. Well beside building your ship.

Escape Velocity Nova is a good game for this as well. You can freely explore the universe, get caught up in quests as you go to spaceport bars, do trade routes, and overthrow planetary governments. Easily the best plot I've ever encountered in a largely free-roaming game.

Rayman: Origins.

I always loved Rayman, but the more-cartoony art-style and the music/sounds really make this one my favourite. The controls are pretty smooth, and while the gameplay isn't so difficult; it rewards you for taking smoother "lines" through a level by looking awesome and giving you more lums (coins, basically) which makes things a whole lot more challenging if you're going for a perfect run.

There's very little that perks me up a bit when I'm feeling stressed or down, but this really does it for me.

I never played it but there was a an X-COM-ish game called ST: Away Team that came out in 2001

I just got a new laptop and I'm looking for ideas for new games (my thing is simulators and strategy games, I like to create stuff, buildings, etc). I already plan to buy Sims 3 and Spore, and while I'm a fan of AoE I'm kind of tired of the franchise and would like to try something else in the same genre. I read about a castle building game a while back, I think it was Stronghold, is that any good?

Also, I heard Portal 2 is really short and only worth getting if I plan to play co-op (I may have already spoiled the game for myself via youtube).

Portal 2's singleplayer is still totally worth it, though I beat it in about 6 hours. I also hear good things about the community maps, but I haven't tried any of them.

Indeed, the levels based on the 2D Portal Flash game are said to be quite splendid. (I think someone said that some of them were used in the console-only "Still Alive" expansion.)

Heh, I mainly meant that a Tactic RPG could be entertaining in itself (for a while at least), while RPG fights tend to get boring quickly and thus need a better story to be entertaining.
Planetscape, yes I guess I could try that again, didn't seem bad when I tried the beginning and it does have many fans.

Hmm, see I'm behind the curve - don't have 5. Mainly because 4 is slow enough on my PC 5 would make it explode. But really, after 2 I haven't seen anything that really wowed me. 2 had so many issues(at least for my style of play). After that, meh. Whichever one is fine.

If you want story - Planescape:Torment.

If you want Tactics - X-Com:UFO Defense or whatever the first one is called. Terror from the Deep is an expansion pack, the rest are varying degrees of Terrible.

There's the UFO series that also has tactical combat, but it's a lot smaller and more intimate combat than X-Com. X-Com has named, faced soldiers that die by the thousands. UFO:Afterlight, in contrast, has about 14 soldiers and if they die - they're gone. That's it.

..I should probably play the other UFO games already.

Everything. In Paris? LEVEL EVERYTHING. Yes, you will take a -200 penalty for killing civilians and destroying buildings. But you'll get a +200 for recovering that many alien bodies and possibly capturing some. Also, by that point, fuck keeping them happy anyway. You're gonna INVADE MARS.

I actually really liked xcom-apocalypse. I loved being able to mix and match the loadouts of my agents so much and all the options open to me. also hiring a team of mutants early on, leaving them train for ages. they were the weakest at the start but became superhumans if trained enough and could mind control almost anything.

Just tried it out, first landing I kill 2 off them, then they throw a grenade and I only have one Person left. Maybe I need to spread them out a bit more.

I don't recall if the Steam version fixed the bug. The bug being difficulty level. In that there are none. After the first combat, all difficulty levels are reset to Beginner.

It's... still kinda a tough game, in spite of that.

Personally, I prefer to use 16 soldiers, in 4 4 man strike teams. I can make do with 3, but I've found with 2 in a group, they're more likely to have an unseen alien sneak up on them and shoot them dead, or for the alien to be spotted right as the last one runs out of action points.

Note, the symbols in the bottom left. they're action point saving buttons. They'll prevent you from using all your action points, and save enough for a Snap Shot, Aimed Shot or Autofire. You want to always end your turn with at least one or two, if not everyone, having enough action points for at least a snap shot. That way, if they spot an alien during the alien's turn, they may get a shot off and - if you're lucky - kill the damned thing.

Aimed Shot is right below the green arrow, Snap Shot is to the right of the green arrow, and autofire is the one with a whole buncha dots coming out of the gun.

Crouching is also a good idea (the button right above the Rank Indicator, the gold button with an R on it in my image) as it makes your characters a smaller target. Can't remember if it increases their accuracy or not, but you can have a standing solder behind a crouching one and basically have rows ready to gun down anything that crosses their vision. The rest of the buttons should be somewhat obvious if you click on them. The Arrow and Person icons on the far left, with both an Up and Down button... The ladder one will adjust your view so you can see the multiple levels. The one with a person will physically move your soldier (if able), and is needed to use flying jetpacks or alien elevators (the red 3x3 pad in the image)

I'm presenting it as something unusual, because I finish games very, very rarely: I didn't even finish HL2, for example.

But I loved VTM, and I want more. Not more vampires (I don't really like vampires, either pre- or post-Twilight ones), but more plot, more well-written characters, more intrigue and atmosphere. Shooting/leveling/puzzle-solvinging/any kind of great mechanics or graphics not required.

Uplink is a lot better, IMHO. Hacker Evolution feels to me like an over the top clone: too tacky.

By the way, I recently found out about Codelink, a multiplayer hacking simulator very similar to Uplink.

Ok, so looking for an RPGish game. I apparently don't have patience for the standard D&D based ones. I liked some parts of NWN, but fuck, I must have been doing something wrong because the combat was insanely tough. I'd run away from fights constantly to rest and recover.

SO yeah, an RPGish game. Something you level up and kick ass. Story is about tertiary if not farther down. I don't want to hear about Dumbass the Farmer and needing his chickens back. I just want to lay waste. Fun spells would be nice. Maybe a cross between Magicka and NWN. Or CoD and Magicka and Dark Souls.

Yeah, tall order. Any suggestions are appreciated. Also, I need more sleep.

It seems obvious, but... Skyrim is pretty much dead-on for that. I mean, sure, you still have random villager X come to ask you about Bear Pelts, but the way the game is set up means you can just ignore/stab her and go kill another dragon.
