Last year, a centre for victims of domestic violence had to close because the government had cancelled their £20,000 grant.

This year ...
As of next month, archive copies of Acts of Parliament will cease to be printed on vellum, saving £80,000 in costs.

Priorities. We has them.

See, this one I'm not so sure about. When the historians look back over the English parliamentary record in five thousand years, they'll be able to pinpoint the moment that the desire to portray Government as cost-saving overtook the absolute requirement for upholding tradition, as the moment vellum was traded for "archival paper".

And it is a requirement: that's the only reason we even have a monarchy, or the opening of Parliament and the other elaborate ceremonies around state events.

fuck cancer, sidewise, with a chainsaw.

And fuck all those assholes who promise they can 'cure' cancer with some shit-eating diet or snake oil, and rob someone of their last weeks with false hope and delusion while robbing them blind, making the family suffer even more.

People like that should also be fucked sidewise with a chainsaw.

Wow. Yes. Yes, they should. I just came from a website with an article about how homeopathy has been found to be effective against 0 out of 68 diseases.

Actually, that wasn't the one I wanted to link. This was the one I wanted to link:

TRIGGER WARNING!

I thought about that, and decided that the nature of the trigger was in the URL for anyone who cared to check before they clicked. The spoiler tags were for people who prefer to avoid ever even seeing the word.

The headline is going to be more triggering than seeing the word "rape" above the spoiler.

Also, it's not okay to start slinging around ableist slurs just because you're talking about someone especially shitty.
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

Rant:
The ins and outs of renting in the shitty side of town. Part IV: clogged drains (shower/toilet)

Background: This is a converted commercial space, so I am the first time someone is renting this space for residential use, however the house itself was built in 1905, however the bathroom was added approximately 2 years ago from my estimation, connecting into the older pipes such as the sewer drainage, etc. A (very) cheap contractor was used for this remodel/conversion, who likely cut corners (more on this later).

Story: The shower begun to drain slow (to the point where you're standing in 4" of water by the end of a short shower) late last week. If the toilet is flushed during this time, schmutz will actually back up from the shower drain into the shower. I informed the landlord of this, and after a full day of non-working bathroom (the toilet clogged as well at this point, so it was pretty far down the pipes. I ran some drain-o though, as well as a small pipe snake to no avail). During this time, I was lucky that the adjoining unit (the other half of the commercial space that got converted) was empty, and the landlord left the back door unlocked for me to use the empty unit's bathroom.

This space has access to the bottom of the house (a basement) where all the piping is. I have a good amount of construction/code compliance background (Architect), so I went down to look at the pipe situation. The piping coming from the bathroom for drainage was no bigger than 2" when the California building code minimum is 3"

The plumber showed up at 9:00pm, took one look under the house, and said "I'll fix it by the morning." Plumber came in when I wasn't there, and "repaired" the problem, and everything drained again (for now). I received a bill from the landlord (less than a week later) saying I had to pay for the plumber. The problem was, it was backed up again, the same problem. Nothing gets flushed down there besides excrement and toilet paper. The landlord is of the oldschool slum-lord opinion that any problem should be paid for by the tenant, laws be dammed. I'm pretty much preparing for a fight where I'm going to have to threaten to expose the sub-standard piping to the city (My friend is a plumber and offered, when she was there, to look at the pipes, and she refused to let anyone down there. This is, of course, because it is very much not-to-code in many aspects including dry rot in the basement). I'm not looking forward to looking for a new place, but I'm also not one to be pushed around and have my rights trampled upon. This landlord made a mistake when she decided to tangle with someone who actually knows their rights, and knows the code requirements and restrictions for tenantable spaces.

I hate people that take advantage of others.

Well, I can't nest spoilers, can I? I made a choice. You disagree.

I just looked up "emotionally retarded" and apparently it's nothing like what I thought it was, so yeah, I was wrong there. "Narcissistic" would have been the better choice. Guy sort of sounds a bit like my old biology teacher.

Sableagle wrote:Well, I can't nest spoilers, can I? I made a choice. You disagree.

The point isn't a difference on opinion, it's on how to effectively understand what might be triggering. It's good you used a trigger warning, but there are many triggers - all sorts of abuse, violence, military service, etc.

Let's say humus was a trigger for someone - and I'm choosing a ridiculous example because I don't want someone to be actually triggered by this discussion. Just writing down "humus" won't trigger them (at least to my knowledge). If you were to describe the process of eating humus, or of making humus, that's what may trigger them. So by writing down "Trigger warning" and then in the spoiler linking to an article whose title is "Humus recipe using blender and olive oil" or something, you're making sure anyone who has any sort of trigger might avoid your content, or if they don't, you're risking triggering people who have PTSD related to humus. The best solution would be to write the trigger outside the spoiler and the potentially triggering content in it. It's not like a spy trigger in movies when you say "sarsaparilla" or whatever and the deep undercover agent will suddenly wake up and realize they were working for the other side.

I don't mean to sound condescending in this, and I apologize if I do - I'm trying to explain in detail since people often use trigger warnings in the wrong way.

Well, what's to gain from reporting a suicide bombing in some unknown Turkish capital targeted at military personnel and not claimed by anyone?
We've got all these refugees to report on and the USA's pre-election stuff and the destruction of Syria. Much more controversial topics and they lend themselves better to sensation* and therefore viewership.

*or fearmongering and propaganda, though Occam's razor dictates that it's simply sensation, as news companies need subscriptions to justify (allow, in case of private ones) their existence.
**Yes, I had to look it up. I had no idea there were attacks in Turkey at all (well, except in the eastern region of course, because the central goverment and the PKK are still fighting each other).

Never would have guessed!

update on the plumbing, they rant 150' of snake through it, and the landlord has since decided that it wasn't me, and was the city's old (nearly 100 year old) clay pipes that were crushed during previous repairs, and only showed up as a problem due to recent rainstorms and root growth.

WHY, in the name of all that is holy, do gorram companies use idiotic sales reps in place of tech support people?!?!? You can't tell me that there are not qualified engineers or technical support people who actually have a fucking clue who could maybe, i dunno, HELP A CLIENT instead of getting me in contact with a sales rep (who, btw, is on vacation and is so doubly useless) and my boss is breathing down my neck wondering why it is taking me so long to get this running?!?

Isn't that the thing described in Angband as a twirling pillar, crushing the terrified penguins?

I met them. I slew them. Nobody crushes my penguins, say I, my extra pair of eyes, my extra pair of legs, my scorpion tail, my tentacles, my vampire fangs, my scary beak, my psionic blast ability, my acid spit weapon, the Katana of Groo, the Phial of Galadriel, the Bulb of Edison and quite a few other things I'd accumulated by that point. I also had a lot of gold. I was very good at haggling.

On February 10th, I followed my professor's instructions and turned in my Final Paper in my Management and Leadership class through the various spelling, grammar, and plagiarism detection sites. This was two days before the deadline. He'd been slow to post grades for smaller assignments in the past, so I thought nothing of it when my Final Paper sat ungraded for two weeks. Then my Final grade is posted, and I get a C for the class. Disregarding the value of the Final Paper, I was earning an A, and I have a 4.0 GPA, but that glaring zero dropped my class grade significantly.

I emailed my professor and asked why my paper hadn't been graded yet, and when I could expect my Final grade to be updated, and his reply was that I had never turned the paper in, and he couldn't change my grade once it's posted. I forwarded the digital receipt I got when I posted my paper to the places he said to post it, and he told me I was supposed to post it somewhere else instead, and that's why I didn't receive credit. He said the university has very strict rules for late assignments, and I reminded him that it was turned in two days early; it wasn't my fault he gave one set of confusing instructions in one place and a different set of confusing instructions in another. He said he'd look into it and see what he could do, but that I shouldn't count on having the paper accepted and the grade changed.

He's been looking into it for three days now, and I haven't heard anything. I'm trying to be calm and patient, but I will seriously take my case all the way to the top if necessary, and if that's not enough, I'm absolutely taking my business elsewhere. I refuse to accept a C in a class where I earned an A over something like this.

Definitely go talk to the Dean or head of the department. That is rather unprofessional behaviour from that professor.

I have had that happen several times through online submission processes, even with the whole 'aaaaaaand here's where it got CC'd to my own inbox, complete with time and date'. Nothing happened until I went directly to the faculty directors. Then, amazingly, it got done THE NEXT DAY.

Incredible how much time they can find.

Thanks for the advice. I think that's my next step since I still haven't heard back from the professor. There's a tiny bit of irony hiding in the situation, I think, since my paper was on business ethics. It seems like such a simple matter from my perspective. If I were in his place, I'd absolutely do everything I could to ensure the student got the deserved grade.

Not to sound too cynical, but that entails admitting and owning his mistake. Professors, I find, often don't do that unless fairly pressed.

This wednesday was the start of week 9 of sharply reduced drinking. As I'm continuing on this path which is really difficult at times, because most of my friends like to go out and drinking is an integral part of that activity here in the world's beer capital, Belgium. The most annoying thing is still the people that ask 'why don't you drink just one, one won't hurt!'. Then I want to say that 'you wouldn't give lighted cigarettes to people who quit smoking right? so how does this differ from doing that?'. Usually I just brush it off without saying things like that, but it stays so extremely annoying. It goes as far as not wanting to go out with people of whom I know that they will behave that way.

There's a lot of good news of course as well. After using this new regime, I've started to challenge other bad habits. Because Facebook and 9gag were eating so much time away during the day, I blocked them in a way that they're only accessible during the evening. Doing this helped not only in being a lot more productive, but eliminated the bad effects facebook overusage had on my confidence. Seeing all the people (>400 FB friends) posting all their happy things, made me wander why they're all having the perfect life, and I don't seem to through my problems. This is nonsens of course, but the subconscious started taking it seriously, so it had the negative effects. Quitting Facebook actually had almost instantaneous positive effects! less base stress, better sleep, more confidence, more interested in having personal connection with people. At least, that's now, which is day 3 of reducing the usage of FB. I finally feel like I'm close to really being on top of my game, instead of cruising through college on 10's and 11's (which are barely passing grades). So that's another positive feedback loop in the system!

Slowly but surely I'm getting better at handling bad emotions, instead of running away in busy nightlife. Difficult at times, especially because it's a skill that I've neglected a long time.

So, if others would be thinking about quitting facebook or alcohol because the use can hardly be called 'in moderation', it's really great most of the time, but the adaption period in the beginning will be terrible.

Yeah, I'm glad things are going well for you. It sounds like you have a lot of challenging things in your life, and you're handling them well. Consider that these accomplishments are also part of the happy things people do (and post about) in their lives.

haha, I can see the irony now ! but maybe someone who's having comparable problems could find some reassurance in the post

I don't mean you have to post about that on FB, although people have different social media habits - I have several friends on my wall who earnestly and honestly talk about the things that trouble them, and it's encouraging to see, in a "we all have stuff going on" sort of way. It's a personal accomplishment, something good that you're managing.

I was thinking you referred to the post in this forum. Uhu, those kinds of posts are encouraging to see. I always root for them to get through their problems succesfully. It's mostly the 'perfect life' posts that can have a negative impact after a long enough time.

Yes, luckily none of my friends or family work or live in Brussels. Reading about the attack going on, live, because my news app was updating constantly, while you're just doing your normal life things is so strange. Questions like: why would someone attack Belgium? Will this happen more often? - You can feel these questions in the air, while everyone is going on with their daily lives.

I wonder too.
Why would someone attack Belgium?

Why??
Does someone envy your freedom?

got a ps4 today - a friend bought it for me as a present (which im still in shock from, it was really nice of him to do so). loaded up fallout 4 and managed to play for about an hour? and then the screen started glitching out (that's the best way i can describe it) and then it shut off, and refused to turn on again until my friend and i kind of smacked above the disk drive, and it worked for about half an hour until it happened again. i think, technically, it "blue light of death"'d, but since it doesn't have a warranty there really isn't any way to get a permanent fix as far as i'm aware.

i'm pretty bummed about it, actually, and also frustrated because about 2 weeks ago my xbox's optic laser thing crapped out. i think i'm cursed with malfunctioning consoles.
