I searched high and low for a thread about this, and with searching comes loss. Nearly half of the world watches the world cup, how is there no thread!*

It looks like by tomorrow (06/28/18) we'll know who the final round of 16 will be!

Currently we know who half of the round of 16 will be:
Russia
Uruguay
Denmark
France
Spain
Portugal
Croatia
Argentina
Belgium
England
Sweden
Brazil
Switzerland
Colombia
Japan

Update! Round of 16 pairoffs:
France v. Argentina
Uruguay v. Portugal
Spain v. Russia
Croatia v. Denmark
Brazil v. Mexico
Belgium v. Japan
Sweden v. Switzerland
Colombia v. England

Standings/Schedule: https://www.google.com/search?q=world+c ... q7;mt;fp;1

Who is everyone rooting for?

*I'm guessing there may be one in FaiD, but I don't have access over there

We also know Belgium and England are in the round of 16.

If Germany can't score Mexico are still through.

I'm supporting Belgium, if we ever have a chance to win it all it's now.

No thread in faid.

Germany are done, but it isn't enough for South Korea - Sweden and Mexico to qualify from the group with Sweden at the top.

I'm cautiously optimistic for England, but disappointment is part-and-parcel of the World Cup as an Englishman - my optimism will undergo adjustment after their match against Belgium.

I'm wondering how representative the England-Belgium game will be. Belgium is playing a B-team because second place is supposedly better.

Assuming Brazil win their group, then the winner of Belgium v England is placed in the same quarter as Brazil, which isn't exactly desirable (the other quarter doesn't have any power house teams).
But I don't think either team would want to take the morale hit losing a game might bring, particularly when they've both dominated a lopsided group. You don't want to stumble at the first real test.

"Did you see that ludicrous display last night?"
"What was Sampaoli thinking sending Higuain on that early?"
"The trouble with Argentina is that that they always try to walk* the ball in."

…is what I might have posted on the thread, had it opened sooner.

Anyway, England isn't being totally outclassed yet (to the chagrin of 3/4 of the UK) but it's not really setting my household alight (our family sports interests have tended to point elsewhere, different shaped or sized balls, or no balls at all).

I've got a home-made spreadsheet with loads of formulaic calulations and conditional formatting set up, but that's really just for the love of calculating formulae and formattings conditional. :P

* Or hand-ball…!

I'm rooting for Argentina as that's where my brother-in-law is from. He also has Swiss heritage as a backup plan. I'll be surprised if either team wins their Round of 16 game. I may not watch any more games though, unless my sleep pattern gets out of whack (which happens a lot).

Looking at the matchups for the round of 16, there's going to be no work done on Monday. I work in a metal shop and most of the shop is latino, and the Mexico v. Brazil game is on at 7:00am local time. Everyone (Including front of house, and I) will be watching the game instead.

I predict that England will be knocked out of the competition by a country starting with C or С!

(With my luck, it be the one starting with P or the one starting with Р, instead.)

Updated! Round of 16 thoughts:

I typically stream the Telemundo broadcast, and that Sweden v. Switzerland game is going to be confusing, because of how close the countries are named in Spanish: Suecia v. Suiza

Just as well Swaziland didn't make the tournament.

The way Mexico backed into the round of 16, they deserve to get thrashed by Brazil. There was a week there where one could have hoped for something better, maybe squeaking out something against Switzerland, but it looks to be out in the round of 16, again.

So, if I have the results right (according to the news page I just glanced at, and surprisingly, England survive on penalties - am I even in the right universe?) we now have the quarters finalised.

France v:Uruguay
Brazil v Belgium
Sweden v England
Russia v Croatia

England and Russia were second-place entrants into the 16-block. Home advantage for one.
Group points for these:
9: Uruguay, Belgium (v England), Croatia
7: France, Brazil
6: Sweden, England, Russia

So, on that basic form, for the Semis that's Uruguay, Belgium, (either) and Croatia (but Russia still has that boost and Novichok).
Meaning Uruguay vs Belgium is the unknowable 'known clash' and Croatia (or Russia) seems to be the more logical winner in the 'unknown clash'.

Warning: I probably don't actually know my Netmeg from my Away Leg. The above is hardly pundit-quality predicting. ;)

I want Croatia to whoop England's arse. Also Brazil is a team of clowns and thus should be balleeted by France or Uruguay (or even Belgium I guess), though preferably Uruguay.

England won a penalty shootout.
Nothing else matters any more.

Go here and sound "informed": https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/20 ... edictions/ ;)
(Although it did give England a 54% chance of winning at the start of the penalties, so is highly suspect).

Clearly everyone is still stunned by Belgium's victory over Brazil! That run from Lukaku

Next up: France. They're an impressive young team that will be amazing at the next euros and world cup but I feel Belgium's maturity and talent will keep them off tonight.

England might get the better of Croatia who are tired from two extended games. So the final will show what we'd hoped for in the 3 group match: the first teams of Belgium and England facing each other.

Tunisia and Panama won't have to feel bad about losing in the group stages to the two finalists.

The premier league will also have a fine day on Sunday, showing that while PL teams can't seem to win the champions league, at least they can win the world cup.

Amazingly close game, with Croatia knocking out England!

This puts the final at Croatia v. France, and a 3rd place battle between England and Belgium. Any thoughts on how it's going to pan out? I'm guessing France-Croatia-Belgium-England

That would be my guess too. Croatia must be exhausted, they played 90 minutes more than france. Belgium-England I don't really know. Depends who cares the most I think.

Called it! Even if I did massively, and cyrillically, hedge my bets…

(With my luck, it be the one starting with P or the one starting with Р, instead.)
(And then some more.)

Now I predict Croatia>France (just for fun) and England>Belgium, on penalties (for karma).
