Do you meme? Or: I'm not really into Pokémon

Postby Flumble » Fri Oct 07, 2016 3:59 pm UTC

(I think this is the right place to drop this thread; maybe it fits better over at FaiD, but I dare not enter that place)
Memes are one of the three pillars of religion the internet, the others being porn and the ability to monitor traffic.
Originally "meme" was defined as "an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture". Prescriptivists will tell you it's the only correct definition, but in this thread we'll mostly keep to internet phenomena and blatantly abuse the word as a synonym for "joke" and to describe "content that is produced solely for the purpose of going viral".

Internet memes range anywhere from dancing babies to snoop dogg with hemp leaves, from zalgo to molpies, from advice dog to pool's closed and from "have you tried turning it off and on again" to the american government.

I like memes, especially the reaction images/faces. Not only do they present a more personalized or specific way to express yourself (given the tremendous number of such images nowadays), but if they're used in a quite consistent manner, they also carry additional information. My current favourite 'meme' is gondola, a stoic/nihilistic creature consisting of only a head and legs that observes the world, but does not interfere. The downside of memes is that they often reduce conversation to a very rudimentary form of communication, instead of enriching a discussion —and I'm very much aware I'm showing this behaviour at times; it's just so easy to respond with a little meme to excite a sensible chuckle, rather than seriously taking part in what may be a meaningful discussion.
I don't usually carry memes over to real-life conversation, though in the past years it has become more normal to mention them because they've become more widspread (that is, memes other than rickrolling and chocolate rain).

What's your opinion on memes? Do you only consume them or do you actively spread them? Do you take it to the next level and change or produce memes? What's your favourite meme currently?

I think that as memes have matured over the last decade, we've undergone a paradigm shift: memes are now memes not because they are funny but simply because everybody agrees they're memes. Somewhat like fiat currency, only without government force to back it up.

Overall, this is a good thing, because it will allow for more efficient memetary policy.

Also because hopefully people will stop conflating memes and image macros.

I don't think that will ever happen.

No, but they're useful as a "content-free posting ahead!" warning, I guess. As aldonius said, at some point along the line it stopped being "things that people repeat/mimic because they're funny" and became "things that people repeat/mimic because that's what they've been conditioned to do."

Not really, I am not much of an fan. But then I don't particularly care about premade jokes* or constantly referencing stuff from media either. All three of course can be actually funny sometimes but often they are just noise.

*Don't know the proper term for jokes you basically memorize and then repeat in whole.

I'm trying to work out whether the days of B1FF and Robot McElwain and Kibo were better than today.

And cats are all well and good, but hedgehogs were always my thing. I think the Dancing Baby was just before the moment when I realised that I could no longer keep up with the trends.

Which is not to say I haven't jumped on some bamdwagons, since.

And I'd say that's a pity, because, like a godwin, a discussion might not be resolved at all (or hasn't even started, unlike a godwin), but the will to continue is taken away. Luckily it doesn't happen on this forum (even a discussion on global warming continues after denialists and trolls have left), or at least I haven't noticed. Why would that be, though?

Maximum-entropy jokes? Since they're in a stable state and they're indistinguishable from noise because you've heard them too often.

Incredible, those are memes from before I was born.

Voted under ten times per year. Cannot think of any online instances off-hand. (Does this thread qualify?) Doubts immunity, at any rate. Mimics too much to deny it.

Relies on it more in real-time. Suits a friendly approach. Considers it low effort and low risk humor.
Changes its form depending on the observer.

Honestly I don't meme very much, though exceptions can be made for fresh, "dank" memes. There's a difference though between referencing and memeing, I think. Like if I have a friend called Jack, and he starts talking about memes, I can say "MEMES, JACK" in a gruff voice, and I'm just making a reference. If I just say it randomly for its own sake, it makes no sense and is thus a meme.

I never ever use macros though. They're all terrible.

I tend to make a lot of references in real life, which, if they're new enough might have become means 'I understoood that reference'. If they're old enough then it's often for my own amusement (someone saying we should have a rap battle with some other students, I responded with 'we could call them a pair of pathetic peripatetics' - he looked at me as though I was crazy, but then another friend piped up 'Ignore her, she didn't even make that up' and that's how I found out he liked Calvin and Hobbes).
