TIL that I'm taking the receptionist out on a date tomorrow. I walked into the office and two people glanced at me and stopped talking. Half an hour later I asked one of them what they'd been talking about, and he told me they'd been talking about my date with her tomorrow evening. He also said they'd asked her about it and she'd said it was the first she'd heard of it. So far, nobody's told us where I promised to take her, so I have to hope I'll hear that rumour tomorrow, and that I have something suitable to wear.
Oh, Willie McBride, it was all done in vain.

I'm not sure 10,000 people learned that today, but congrats?

Yeah I know, it was a play on the name of the thread (which traditionally has referred to general knowledge stuff people have learned).

Sorry, I read your post as dismissive when I guess you were making a joke.

If more people worked in the rumour mill, it's possible 10,000 other people would have "known" it before I heard about it ...

... and thank you. I shall let you know how the date is rumoured to have gone.
Oh, Willie McBride, it was all done in vain.

I already knew about it, but if you're gonna have that attitude I'm not telling you where you're supposed to be taking her. I'll let you figure it out for yourself, but I will tell you to wear a tuxedo and bring 2 cans of silly string and a single rain poncho with the Albanian flag.

Today I learned...
Or; It finely sunk in:

The Polar Vortex has become unstable;
ok..I knew that.

The Jet Stream is dipping farther down to the mid latitudes.
The Jet Stream is bringing COLD air. That's the Weird part.

Because the Arctic is gettin warmer,
I am getting spells of Cold Weather.

There are smarty pants that can explain it.
They can't explain it to my garden plants.

This is why it's now called "global climate change" instead of "global warming". A few degrees in air temperature doesn't mean much; after all, temperature can vary a hundred degrees every year. But the disruption of the pattern of global temperatures is what destroys ecosystems.
Spoiler:
I once had an apartment where the location of the thermostat induced a reverse effect, where raising the thermostat setting lowered the temperature in my room.

Well...That's Weird.
But, but, but The Wide Pacific Ocean is supposed to keep our climate Mild as a Kitten.

But; That stupid Jet Stream is getting all Loopy.
Our Winter Climate and our Summer Climate were only 5 degrees different.
That was one of the things I liked most about living on the water's edge.

Now! 101 F. in the Summer and Winter water phase shifting to a solid!
That's, just, Not Normal! Waa!!
I want Warm. Not Hot; Warm.

What are we getting?
A Loopy Jet Stream.

It's, kind of, fun.
Knowing that the Jet Stream is pulling that cold air down here.
What a powerful force the Jet Stream is. Awe inspiring, to me.

The water protected your plants and now it betrays them.
What a terrible lesson for the poor garden plants to learn, that the very elements themselves can be at one instant harboring, the next overwhelming. If only you could explain their new seasons to them, and teach them how to tell time.

There's a whole world of plant sexes, so, even assuming they're cis-gendered, chances are your plants are neither/both he's nor she's. :)

Next week is going to be so cold in the Netherlands that we'll have natural ice on which we can go skating. It's a pity global climate change is mostly warming over here. On a small scale, that is. Or perhaps even narrowing, since the past couple of winters have been warm and the summers have been cool and rainy, except for the few bursts of heat before summer and at the end of summer. :?

Thank You for the article.
Plants are interesting.

Did we discuss the breaking up of the Arctic Vortex?
Because the Far North is warming so fast the Jet Stream has become Loopy.

Yep. Loopy. That's the word meteorologists are using.
Those Jet Stream Loops bring Cold Air farther South.

Dang! Poor simple me.
I was looking forward to some warm winters.

well...Before moving inland away from the water.
It seems, it is Not to be.

The planet is going to use the Jet Stream to distribute what the Arctic thinks is Warm Air.
I don't think it is Warm. Anything that will phase shift water to a solid is too darned Cold!

(Shrug) The Dutch, in old paintings, seemed to enjoy ice skating.
Will you enjoy it? Be safe out there Flumble. Ice is treacherous.

I do think that some of the extra variability from the jet stream looping is really worrying. While the eastern US has always had pretty variable winter weather (it’s been below 0 pretty much all the way down to the gulf coast!), it even seems to me as if it has been getting even more so in my short life. I mean, when I was younger, I seem to remember mostly chilly weather (60s day, 40s night) interspersed with the occasional freeze at night during the winter. Now, it seems like most years, we alternate between fairly warm (70s day, 50s night) and really cold (30s day, 20s night) instead.

Even anecdotally from people who’ve lived where I go to school at for a while say that the snow used to stick in the winters, but now it randomly melts a lot more.

What really worries be is beyond the human impacts, it could devastate ecosystems. I mean, plants go dormant in my home area, but it’s not super deep. Having a lack of chilly periods before freezes seems like it could be bad for both the native and cultivated plants in the area.

Yes. Our Plants do respond slowly to change.
But; They will respond.

I read a book about Trees, once upon a Time, long ago.
It explained, the Trees were out running an Ice Age.

In Europe the mountains run East and West.
The Trees ran into the Mountains and died.

In North America the Mountains run North and South.
The Trees were able to out run the Ice Age and live.

The specific Trees are Anthocyanin producers.
That explains Why the Eastern part of the US has Trees with such beautiful Red colors.
Of course, people have planted Anthocyanin producers in Europe. There is That.

Plants can't move as fast as our climate is changing.
So; During Cold Snaps we must Cover or Move them.

Oh! Oh! The internet has confirmed what Flumble wrote.
It is going to be COLD in England and Western Europe.

The BBC has a video clip that makes me laugh.

The English can explain anything with a Cup of Tea!
