Velociraptor Awareness Day?

Postby DisorientedPenguin » Thu Apr 16, 2009 9:13 pm UTC

Hey,

Anyone know if there are any events happening this Saturday for velociraptor awareness day?

If not, anyone have a projector and screen we could bring to a park, and have a Jurassic Park movie viewing picnic?

Alternatively, we could read aloud scenes from the book, or try to re-enact scenes that never made it into the movie.

Cambercreatures!

Motherfuckers are trying to close the japanese market in Porter.

Write to them and tell them to fuck off with that shit.

That is all.

I've heard that the reason it's closing is because the owner is selling it and retiring to Hawaii.
I don't know how Lesley is involved with all this (maybe they're trying to buy Hawaii?) but I haven't heard about the whole Asian kick-out (very different from the Asian cookout) thing. I'll ask my manager about it.

Anyway, I think we can all agree that Lesley University is a living, breathing monster that is trying to be another (less attractive, not-on-the-cheerleading-squad) Harvard.

Edit: Also, it's not really a matter of "trying to," the decision's been made already--without MY consent, mind you--and it's going to close at the beginning of May :(

Judging by previous patterns, you'll sit in someone's living room with a whole gaggle of us and exchange semi-witty banter over food, alchohol, and depending on your preferences, possibly some manner of narcotics.

Which is not to say that something far more adventuresome couldn't occur, I'm just saying, that's how most of our nights with visitors seem to end up...

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum, not to the area. I live in RI, but have a car and now hopefully will have something new and fun to do as it seems like most of the people here have something between their ears and can actually HOLD a conversation. So what is the deal in the upcoming days?

Anyone going to watch the marathon today? My mom was supposed to run it for a charity but she has a herniated disk and can't do the whole thing so we're going to relay it and I'll be doing miles 6.5-13 for her (Framingham to Wellesley).

Have fun!!! Unfortunately I can't watch the marathon today, but I'll send all my fast running vibes. Good luck, and run like the wind! Oh, and I hope your mom feels better soon.

Also, I was invited to this but have to work. Still, it looks like it could be really interesting!
Spoiler:
You are cordially invited to attend the Ninth Annual Henry W. Kendall Memorial Lecture, which will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 4 p.m., at MIT in Cambridge, MA. A reception will immediately follow the lecture. Please check the MIT website for venue details.

This year's speaker is Professor Lonnie Thompson, a distinguished university professor in the department of geological sciences and a research scientist in the Byrd Polar Research Center at The Ohio State University. His research has propelled the field of ice core paleoclimatology out of the polar regions to the highest tropical and subtropical ice fields.

The title of Professor Thompson 's talk is "Global Climate Change: A Paleoclimate Perspective from the World's Highest Mountains."

The Henry Kendall Memorial Lecture Series honors the memory of Professor Henry Kendall (1926-1999) who was the J.A. Stratton professor of physics at MIT. Kendall received the Nobel Prize in 1990 for research that provided the first experimental evidence for quarks. A founding member of the Union of Concerned Scientists in 1969, he served as its chair for 25 years.

We live in a happening place, what can I tell you?

Tonight is the opening movie of IFF, The Brother's Bloom, and it's from the director of BRICK, Rian Johnson, and it looks pretty awesome. I unfortunately am baby sitting.

It's $9 on the big screen at Somerville theatre tonight at 7:30 Oh, and the director's going to be there for a Q&A after...fuck why am I missing this!?

here's the synopsis
Spoiler:
Director Rian Johnson in attendance.

This unique, stylish, and globe-trotting comedy focuses on a pair of orphaned brothers, Stephen (Mark Ruffalo) and Bloom (Academy Award winner Adrien Brody), from their humble childhood spent in countless bleak foster homes to their lives as distinguished, world-renowned con men.

Constantly concocting “stories” for them to enact, Stephen endeavors to orchestrate the ultimate grift. Bloom, on the other hand, longs to leave the swindling behind and live an “unwritten life” free of his brother’s design.

Working with Bang Bang (Academy Award nominee Rinko Kikuchi), an explosives expert and “associate,” they prepare for their last hurrah. Their spectacular plan involves luring and defrauding a bored, beautiful, eccentric heiress from New Jersey named Penelope (Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz). When Bloom develops feelings for her, the dynamic among all of them shifts and threatens to fracture their tight, fraternal alliance, propelling them into their most dangerous scheme ever.

Appropriately narrated by the always-entertaining expert on all things grift, Ricky Jay, BROTHERS BLOOM is the latest film from director Rian Johnson (BRICK).

I only used to live in Cambridge, but I was browsing here and decided I MUST say that I would be at the Lonnie Thompson lecture if I could (that sophyturtle spoilered). I saw his slideshow presentation at Fermilab when he gave it and it was Awesome. It's a talk about global warming and historical atmospheric gas concentration, although it's really about how much he is going to miss his precious tropical high-altitude glaciers when they are gone. I hope some of you go.

Due to my celebrity status, I usually don't have time to hang out... But I would like to meet my formidable opponent, the d33p.

I'm not available weekend nights, but if you guys are grabbing lunch or tea or inappropriate things, let me know.
If you come to my restaurant to harass me, I'll pretend I don't know you guys and call out the dogs.

The sushi dogs.

Emiko: Eddie will not be coming, because he doesn't like car-rides longer than 30 seconds. So I'd be pushing his limit by 5 hours or so.
I'll be wandering aimlessly around the area for Thursday and Friday. Please tell me you serve sake, and in copious quantities.

The eatery where I work does.

What is everybody else's plans on Thursday?
Aside from my 10-12 class and 4-6 class, I am available-ish.

Yes I am aware of this, but a student's schedule during the week does not tend to change a whole lot.

Besides, if you were already within Boston limits, my ninja sense would have warned me, andyou'd be bleeding in an alley I would've greeted you with a hearty hello by now.
