Personally it's getting annoying that no one at WSU knows what xkcd is...I know it's not really science central in Michigan, but there must be more than just myself. Are there any fellow nerds over this way? Or am I all alone? If there are others...hi! And we should organize a meetup!

I'm a little beyond Cleveland, but Ohio isn't really any better than Michigan for xkcd hijinks and I can generally be persuaded to go on minor road trips...

Sometimes I make it down into Ohio too, for rabbit shows in the like. In July I'll probably be in Bowling Green for a fun picnic at the park show.

I live in the Royal Oak area. Near 12 mile and Woodward. Lived in SE Michigan my whole life.
I don't do crazy things nearly often enough. If something comes up I could probably be persuaded to join.

I really don't know what crazy hijinks, I guess that depends on the group? But, Royal Oak is only about 20 min from me (I'm near I75/M59 interchange) and I drive into Detroit every day.

I know that area pretty well. My work has me driving around all day every day throughout the eastern part of Oakland county. I'm usually near I-75/M-59 once a week. Though I'm always at work when I'm there so that specific situation is no good for meeting or hijinks.

Didn't realize that there were quite so many people in the area. I'm currently in Novi, also around Ann Arbor all the damn time.

I have been pathetic lately, and the only place I have been going for social interaction is the dog park. I would love to meet whoever would like to meet up, wherever. I have a kite.

OH! I just remembered! The Perseids are soon! Who wants to have a meteor shower meet up?!

This week actually... But I just realized... Being alone with someone, in the dark, late at night ( even if
it under the stars) might not be the safest feeling place for any of us to meet each other for the first time. You never know, I could be harvesting/collecting research subjects for all you know!

I could be too....*shifty eyes*
(what exactly do you do? Science, I see...what kind? I am a PhD student working in neuro)
And yeah, I am leaving in 8 days for England, not exactly time to get to a meet until I get back to be honest.

Well then...we should organize a meet! I frequent Detroit for school if that is more central...or anywhere along 75 down this way would work.

So, I really want this to happen, so I have compiled a list of things to do.
Detroit Science Center
Detroit Institute of the Arts
Detroit Public Library (guys, the main branch is huge, and how much fun would it be to wander around a gigantic library with people you kind of but don't really know?)
Henry Ford Museum
Cranbrook Institute of Science
Cranbrook Institute of Art.
Exhibit Museum of Natural History in Ann Arbor. (free!)
The Art Museum in Ann Arbor (also free! can be combined with the above thing because they are within walking distance of each other)
Matthei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor (within minutes of above two things. Also free! )
On October 8th, Johnathan Coulton (of Still Alive and Re: Your Brains fame) and Paul Storm will be playing at the Ark in Ann Arbor.
There are also a ton of libraries to stalk around in in Ann Arbor.
Michigan Ren Fest, going on until October 4th.

Guys. Seriously. We have Michigan State, University of Michigan and Wayne State all within an hour, hour and a half of each other. We have NO EXCUSE not to meet up and do something!

I like the DIA and DSC best...but then again, I am a few blocks from there every day, haha. We could also just start with one and go on from there, on down the list, or scramble it up, or something. :)

This totally needs to happen. :D

If we do Ann Arbor we should totally wait for a rabbit show. The Saline Co Fairgrounds (I think) is the location for them at least twice a year last I checked (they usually have a spring show and a fall show).

Guys, if anyone wants to come visit me in ann arbor or novi before a meetup actually happens, let me now.
The weekend of October 9th is the soonest I can make it anywhere, but it would be kind of awesome, because it would mean I have a month of weekend with super exciting things to do.
How many of you guys are over 21?

Edit: HOLY SHIT.

Tomorrow's geohash meetup seems to be very close to downtown Chelsea. I'm going to be there. (It's only like 20 minutes away from me). If anyone else posts with interest in going, I will bring potato soup!

Chelsea is a bit of a drive for me, sorry. :(
I will be over in Lansing in 2 weeks though, but that seems to be far from everyone as well.

Well hey, I'm there every Tuesday and Thursday. A little bit of driving isn't so bad. As long as it's in the OUT direction of metro detroit. ;)

Bumping because Luff and I think we should actually organize one.
Shro, you are in Ann Arbor, right? That seems "central"-ish maybe we should get a meet planned for there. It's not too bad of a drive for me (about 45min-1hr traffic depending). Pick a Saturday or Sunday! I'm flexible-ish (in that so long as planned enough in advance it doesn't really matter unless I have exams early the following week).

We should definitely meet in Ann Arbor. Go to the museum. The art one and the science one. They're all really close. And it's warm now, so walking isn't as much of a nightmare.

Sundays are probably best because there's more free parking in the actual city. Let me know when and what kinds of stuff you want to do, and I'll see what's going on. The weekend of the 27th is the Ann Arbor Film Festival. If you want to go out to bars and such, Ashley's is the place I'd want to go. Seriously, if you want to eat in Ann Arbor, you definitely have to try something new. Ethiopian? Thai? Indian? Got all of it.

Hello fellow Michiganders!

I am new here (sort of; I have been something of a lurker since xkcd's been around) and just decided to take a look to see if there are other people in the area hanging around here. I recently moved back to the metro-Detroit region after living in Portland (OR), and before that I had stints here, as well as in Boston (MA), Beijing (China), and Osaka (Japan). I'm 26 and back in school to finish my undergrad, working full-time, etc.

I'm hoping to find people in the area with similar interests who perhaps would like to become friends and/or hold social-ish events. What better place to find these people than here?

Are there any meet-ups planned for the near future?
