If we're going to have a forum games forum, let's play something that real men (with thick glasses) play.

Rules:
  • Only valid moves count (follow the thread for castling/en passant/etc; feel free to comment on which state was valid)
  • You cannot play until the board changes position twice since your last turn (corollary 1: you can't make this a one on one game; corollary 2: You can swap sides while playing)
  • Brains only, please

I don't get it, why are you resetting the board? Granted, the moves you guys made aren't the ones I would have gone for...

This rule:
  • You cannot play until the board changes position twice since your last turn
Thus, progression of the board past a few moves requires three players, not two. The rule is there to prevent progression from just being a versus game. Anyone can play at any time, just not twice in a row, or on two consecutive turns of the same color.

I'm not exactly resetting the board--I'm just pointing to the last valid state following the rules. As I said, I don't mind the side game--I just don't want to consider it part of the canonical progression (though I would suggest side games be labeled).

The point is twofold: (1) to enforce this being a forum game, and (2) to create play progressions outside of a traditional two player game. Taking sides in itself isn't forbidden either (e.g., you could play only white, and play strategically); neither is discussing strategy for a particular side (though any progression of the game within the rules counts).

Postscript: If you want the above board position, just play it!

How is this a legal move? Did I miss a Chess rules seminar where they updated the move rules of a Pawn to let it move diagonally to an empty space?

Erm, I think the En Passant move was wrong. It would have been the opposite pawn which captured, and not the other way around...

The En passent move is correct. En passent was a move added to chess when pawns were allowed to move two squares in one first off. They were allowed to move 2 squares because the game started too slow so they added en passent so you could take pawns which did a double move.

I propose we use simple Paint images. It'll be slightly easier on the eyes.

Alternately, we could do what Wikipedia does.

Ahh, sorry... It's just that... visualizing colors while visualizing positioning got me all discombobulated (this being about the En Passant move)! All is well.

I think using little images would be nice, as well...

Another suggestion, just to help us better understand the state of the game:

We should keep a copy of the last move in the newest post (as sometimes, there are posts in between - like this one =/). Also, announcing the color in turn would help, so that those who were away for a day don't have to read the last few moves. In fact, the first suggestion should help with this anyway!

Just to confirm, White is on the bottom this time, correct? I gathered this based on the fact a white square always sits on the bottom right corner, and the Queen always sits on her color... So, yeah. I'm mostly talking to myself to clarify.

The problem with using links to images for each square is that it makes it difficult to play. A link to images of whole rows would be better (of course, this would have to be virtual due to the number of combinations).

Links to images of lines (obviously, virtual) would be better; alternate notations would be alright as well, but for this context they should at least map directly to board states.

I think a text notation as shown is most generally flexible, but I wouldn't mind people who want to voluntarily install something like xboard/winboard, and supplement the state with FEN.

In FEN, the current state is:
r1bqkbnr/pp3p1p/2n1p1p1/3p4/3P4/1P3N2/P1P2PPP/RNBQKB1R w KQkq - 0 7

With winboard or xboard (for windows/*nix), you can just copy this line and paste it in. As I said, please use text notation; if you wish to enhance it with FEN, feel free.

You can use PGN in winboard/xboard as well, to dump out a textlike state (most of which you might want to edit away), which looks like this:
