Broken Image links

Postby ressing1 » Tue Apr 21, 2015 7:21 pm UTC

Your site code changed lately and now all of you img tags start with "//" . This has caused to page to look strange several times. Just thought you'd want to know.
it should start with h t t p : . Sorry for the spacing, but if I don't do that this forum thinks this message is spam.

Image
Seems to work properly, which makes me think this is attempted spam.
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

They're talking about the image links on the comic, not the forum. The images on the actual comic page are linked with protocol-relative URIs:

Code: Select all

<div id="comic">
<img src="//imgs.xkcd.com/comics/permacal.png" title="The flood of PermaCalNTP leap-second notifications was bad enough, but when people started asking for millisecond resolution, the resulting DDOS brought down the internet." alt="PermaCal" />
</div>
The point being that if you access xkcd via HTTPS, then it'll also request the images via HTTPS, but if you just use regular HTTP then it doesn't need to encrypt the images either.

I'm not sure how this would make the page "look strange"... what browser are you using? Is it some weird obscure and/or ancient browser that doesn't handle protocol-relative links properly?

Code: Select all

enum ಠ_ಠ {°□°╰=1, °Д°╰, ಠ益ಠ╰};
void ┻━┻︵╰(ಠ_ಠ ⚠) {exit((int)⚠);}

I actually experience this as well. I think the issue may have to do with the H T T P S site using a different subdomain for serving images.

When I put an image URL starting with h t t p and imgs. into a browser, I get automatically redirected to h t t p S and SSLimgs. subdomain. Sometimes I drop that link into a browser and get redirected to h t t p S and imgs. subdomain which sometimes fails and sometimes works, and sometimes redirects me to the SSLimgs. subdomain.

Either way, on multiple networks and multiple devices (iOS 9, OS X 10.10, Windows 7; home network, work network, AT&T's LTE network) images are broken for me completely in both the RSS feed and on the site. If I right-click the image, and view it in a new tab, it works properly and then refreshing the site causes all the rest of the images to work properly. Since I don't have that kind of browser control on iOS, the site is unusable for me on that device.

God damn the spam filter here is a giant turd. I wonder how many helpful posts have been deterred because of it; I almost gave up posting this.
