Re: 1984 (Or Nineteen Eighty-Four)

I can see how people would find it boring, but I loved it. Every word. It's one of those books I could leave on the shelf for a decade, read it again, and find I remember it almost word-for-word. I find I enjoy books that stick in my memory like that.

Re: Books that make you ridiculously happy (or: pick-me-ups)

Anything morbidly depressing, dystopian, or highly literary. I'm thinking of 1984 , Brave New World , Catch-22 , Shakespeare (especially comedies), the Divine Comedy, Utopia , Gulliver's Travels , etc. Nothing makes me quite as happy as a morbidly depressing book. I also read anything by Isaac Asimo...

Re: Twilight?

I've read them, and didn't bother looking for any "deep meaning". The books have little literary value. They are basically chick flicks in book form. Some of my friends are crazy about them, but I think they're the sort of books I'd pick up when I'm feeling that anything really highbrow is...

Re: Catch 22

I read this and laughed all the way through, except when I stopped and wondered, "This is terrible. Why am I laughing?" It's also one of the very few books that has ever made me cry. Now I have the overwhelming urge to read it again. I'm never quite so happy as when I'm reading an morbidly...

Re: What's your major?

Double major: computer science and either physics or chemistry. My parents and all the college students I know tell me chemistry is awesome, but I have the most unmitigatedly terrible chemistry teacher imaginable. She's almost as bad as this one English teacher who hated it when her students read bo...

Re: Teachers that cannot teach

My chemistry teacher, for reasons unknown, taught us the latter half of our textbooks during first semester. No one in this class has any prior chemistry experience, so we all struggled with more advanced concepts and lessons that assumed we'd already studied the fundamental material. She even skipp...

Re: Awesome Teacher Quotes

College professors are so much funnier than high-school teachers. In Computer Science, as we were working on a circular queue class (in Python), my professor was going over the __init__ function. class CircularQueue: def __init__(self): self.items = [None] * 10 "So you have your list of None's ...
