Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

The only nonsense here is the increasingly tenuous strawman arguments that you're resorting to. (And I hate to invoke that barnyard cliché of Internet discourse, believe me.) No one is claiming that abolitionism postdates the creation of the United States or the Republican Party; we're pointing out ...

Sure they were. Yes, yes, it may have been secondary in Lincoln's mind to keeping the states together, but the Civil War was primarily fought over slavery, and both sides were entirely aware of the results that would follow depending on who achieved victory. I am aware that it is, in some circles, ...

The Northern states had had slavery too, as had the British Empire in general. The keeping of certain classes of working people in servitude has been a pervading status quo of human societies; the categorical abolition of it, particularly on the basis of something approximating a modern notion of hu...

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Gay marriage is an issue that came rather a long way without the courts forcing it. Public opinion seems to be the big factor, regardless of venue. It did? From the start (here in Massachusetts), most of the states that legalized it did so by court rulings and not by legislative or popular action. ...

Diadem wrote:So what happens next? I assume this will be appealed?

Nope. The US has a stricter prohibition on double jeopardy than most other countries (see the commentary around the Amanda Knox case), meaning that if a court acquits you at any level, the case is over.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

As elaborated here, that person appears to be using "voter suppression" to mean ad efforts aimed at demoralizing potential voters, not the placing of actual impediments to voting (as the term is usually understood). Although they may well be doing that too.

Re: Star Trek: To Infinity and Beyond

Well, the violent conflict approach has been a feature of Trek movies from nearly the beginning. TMP was basically a serviceable double-length episode (it was going to be the pilot for Phase II), and it's generally thought of as a middling and underwhelming effort. What saved the franchise from obli...

It's hardly a counterexample. It was almost literally Kant's own example. Read your own link. Kant quotes Benjamin Constant, but in that quote Benjamin Constant references Kant when he talks about the lying-to-a-murderer example. The lying-to-a-murderer example really comes from Kant himself, incre...

You know there’s a name for the tactic you’re using, right? Everyone who chooses “the lesser of two evils” is actively voting for evil. They are making the situation *worse*, and they themselves know it. This evil/not-evil binary that you've constructed is a hopelessly simplistic way of looking at the world. We're faced with two imperfect alternatives and w...

Voting for a good candidate is a good idea. Unless doing so makes it more likely that a terrible candidate will win. Unless you're in a safe state where it doesn't matter. Unless enough people think the same way, causing it to matter again. As long as we have FPTP and the electoral college, this qu...
