I never did anything super ridiculous, but my team's final project for our microcontrollers class was a modified Theremin. It was pretty awesome. We also got a really good grade on the project and the professor used it the next year as an example.

What about hibernating? I don't have hibernate working on Ubuntu, but when I'm working in XP and make my laptop hibernate, when it wakes up it gives me the boot menu. and coming back from hibernation is faster that actually restarting the OS.
