We started watching it! We only watched three episodes so far, but we're enjoying it! It's kind of cheesy, but in an endearing sort of way? And yes I love we don't have to deal with ambiguities or "is he the real deal??" sort of stuff. The actor also has a really good smile for this charac...

Have you considered looking at dictionaries? Also, that list was compiled in 1991, in no way does it cover all words in common usage. For example, it does not contain the word "selfie"

I would very much like to see a survey asking people what they know of various Marvel characters before they go see the movies. I wouldn't be surprised if Marvel actually did something like that - asked people who don't read comics but are in the general target demographic for the film to describe a...

Alien was indeed fantastic. Salt was...okay. That said, I think there's a difference between recasting a character the audiences have never seen before, and rewriting one that they're familiar with. There are definitely roles you can cast via coin flip or what have you, and it's probably a good way...

Actually there are a few stories that worked fantastically well with just that idea in mind. The first that comes to mind is Alien, where all the characters were written as "generically male" with a specific instruction that the actual casting should involve people of all genders. So Riple...

Re: I AM GROOT! (Guardians of the Galaxy)

To an extent a trailer is almost a creation in itself. It's definitely a piece of media that's consumed by others. In some cases trailers can be scenes that aren't actually a part of the movie itself when it comes out. Which is not a criticism, it's a reasoning why they can be judged separately from...

It's not that big a deal. I mean, it is a big deal, but the determination "the trailer is good/bad" is not relevant. I think the trailer's fine, I never said the trailer is bad. And something can handle representation badly and still be good otherwise. I think we should notice and pay atte...

Since he was, however, the latter some change was required and I like the direction they went because Tilda Swinton did a really good job IMO. Um, no, that's not true. The first trailer for the movie featured zero dialog, if I remember correctly, and I had no complaints then. There's great action in Die Hard, too, and it's a fantastically-written movie. But it also kind of sucks in the representation of women category. Things can be compli...

I'm criticizing the trailer. Once the movie comes out I will criticize the movie. It seems to me a trailer is supposed to entice people to watch the movie. Let's also be fair, the CGI plant was the best part of the first movie anyways. Sure, but coupled with the fact every other member of the team got dialog in the trailer, and they all happen to be male (which is also an issue), that's more glaring. If this were a trailer of just Groot I wouldn't hav...

Basically the quote from the writer illustrates the choice was a marketing-dependent one. Which we see a lot in movies, and we still get to criticize them for it. At the end of the day, no matter how you spin it, there's one less Asian actor in a prominent role because of this, and that's too bad, a...

I think you just illustrated part of the problem. The Ancient One isn't just an Asian character - he's a Tibetan character. Those are really bullshit excuses. His excuse is "I can't imagine being able to show a character so it's not seen as a sex symbol or a racial stereotype"? That really shows a lack of imagination on behalf of the director. Again, just make a non-bullshit Asian character. Take Ming Na Wen or...
