Re: Music with crescendos?

The first movement of Shostakovich's 7th Symphony (specifically, the Bolero-like middle section).

Re: Post YOUR music here (Merged : The Rainbow Correction)

Here's a few things of mine. Unfortunately they're all terrible midi recordings. This is a movement for string trio (violin, viola, and cello) that I wrote a few years ago for a school project: http://www.mediafire.com/?urp6fbv7y413qhm This is a fugue for three voices in E minor for piano that I als...

Re: Piano Music Suggestions

If you're looking for something off the beaten path, might I suggest the 5th and 6th volume's of Bartok's Microcosmos. There's some very difficult pieces in there, but lots of stuff you should be able to manage. A sample (one of the dances in Bulgarian rhythm): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeUTzCv...

Re: Composing - a natural ability?

Don't concern yourself with myths about composing being a natural ability, or something that must always take place "in the moment." It's something that takes practice, and a single piece of music can often take a long time to work out. As many people in this thread have already pointed ou...

Re: Transcription Request

After doing a tiny bit of research, it looks like it would probably be impossible to do what you ask. Byzantine notation is not the same as modern Western notation in that it specifies not exact pitches and rhythms but a vocabulary of melodic formulas unique to the Byzantine chant tradition. I don't...

Re: Transcription Request

Perhaps if you could provide an example of what Byzantine musical notation looks like, I might be able to help.

Re: Tethering questions

I guess I have a follow-up question: any advice on the best way to tether a phone for free?

Re: Tethering questions

Thanks for the response Eseell. I'd probably only use the internet for email and web browsing, Youtube occaisionally. I don't download movies or music, and I don't do online gaming. My little netbook isn't good for that stuff anyway. I'm a student and I'm trying to think of ways to save money. Seems...

Tethering questions

I haven't found a thread dedicated to the issue of tethering smartphones, so I thought I'd create one. I have a specific question about tethering. If I have an unlimited data plan and the capability to tether my phone, can I use it to access the internet with my laptop instead of paying for a separa...

Re: Studying Music 2.0

I disagree. I'm not sure if here you are disagreeing with me. To clarify, when I said "it's important to recognize that some of the best things take time," I wasn't talking about always meeting some "objective" (whatever the hell that means in this context) standard of skill. Of...

Re: Studying Music 2.0

I never studied music, unfortunately... and now I regret it very much, because I really want to play the piano. I am trying to teach myself to at the very least read notes (and I am making progress), but every time I think of the years and years I should spend practicing to be any good I just want ...

Re: Studying Music 2.0

Hey there. Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I thought I'd use it as an opportunity to formally introduce myself to the XKCD forums. I'm a musician. I play the piano, and have been for over a decade now. I'm not an exceptionally talented pianist, but I get by. My main interests have less to do wit...

Re: What's Your Major!?!?!

Just finishing my Bachelor of Music degree (specializing in music theory and minoring in English) and in September I'll be starting a Master of Music degree in music theory. After that I plan to get my PhD in music theory.
