Today is the first day I thought to log in to these fora in about a year, and I am happy to announce that over the past year, my sister dragged me to a community band rehearsal and then I kept coming back every week. Re: Install ncurses 5.9 and 6.0 on the same FreeBSD box?
From my searches, it looks like ncurses 6.0 is source-compatible with 5.9, but not binary-compatible. So if you're building GT.M from source, it should still work, but if you've gotten an old binary build from somewhere, you'll have troubles. I had a very quick scroll through the code you linked to...

Re: What hosting do you all use?
In the past I had used 110mb.com (it was one of the few that offered php and no ads at that time), but I have no idea what's left of that service, or even that company in general. Then I switched to hosting on my own system (first a desktop, then a raspberry pi), which was nearly free, because my p...

Install ncurses 5.9 and 6.0 on the same FreeBSD box?
I'm trying to install GT.M for FreeBSD . One of the dependencies of this package is ncurses. When I used sudo pkg install ncurses on my BSD box, it installed ncurses 6.0. However, this GT.M implementation specifically looks for ncurses 5.9, so it GT.M won't run. I'm still a BSD n00b, so how can I ei...

What hosting do you all use?
Are there any good free hosts? I've got 4 small domains that I'd like to host. Current free hosting is down for over 5 minutes for the second time in fewer than 6 months.
Anyway, where all do you have your sites hosted, for those of you who own domains?

Re: Do you like or hate Windows 8?
I'm disgusted with Windows 8, and further, I think the covert downloading of ~6GB of "updates" in the background on Windows 7 machines followed by an extraordinarily persistent, almost unremovable nag box to suggest upgrading to Windows 10, is more evidence that Microsoft doesn't play nic...

US copyright laws prevented people from detecting the Defeat Device until now. Fully disagree. Heartbleed was a horribly simple bug that existed for many years. If you open up the source code of cars, all that will happen is that people will ignore the code in cars. This was the year of Heartbleed,...

Re: What makes a good programming language?
I've bounced back and forth on static versus dynamic typing. My current view is that static typing is worthwhile if only for self-documentation. This becomes increasingly more important as a program grows larger. A hundred line script probably doesn't really need type information, but a thousand li...

More recent matters: it is illegal to operate a business without regard to handicapped or disabled people. And it should be illegal to pay Women 30% less than Men (although we haven't really figured out a way to codify it yet). In all of these cases, the government is imposing its will upon private...

The armchair legal scholar in me hoped that they would have specifically struck down DoMAs as being the blatant violations of the "full faith & credit" clause that they are, but that wouldn't have had as profound of an impact (but would have excited legal nerds).
Re: Monitors?
I'm thinking of going 4K, myself. Once you've seen a retina/HiDPI 27" display, you really don't want to go back. Unfortunately, I guess I'll have to play my games at 1080p or windowed. Such is life. While that's true, it is also true of advanced-panels (IPS and VA), high-color coverage and 144...

Monitors?
What monitors do you have/want (or think are the best)? Currently, I have a super-cheap 1080 AOC monitor with rather shite colour quality. I'd really like one of those "5K" monitors, but both the Dell and Apple options blow my entire new computer budget on that alone (granted you get a fre...
