Re: Is 0 a natural number?

We have Z^+ for {1,2,3,.....}. So N may as well include 0, lest we have to write N\{0} all the time.

But if you're using English, "nonnegative integers" and "positive integers" are far more unambiguous and thus superior.

Re: Steering showdown

One hand on 6 by default. Move it up to 10 or 2 if I need to steer heavily in one direction, to 12 if I need to steer heavily in both directions.

Re: Pi vs Tau

Are we going to get all the old works translated, or just note to everyone being introduced to math that if they try to read anything before the year of the switch they should expect a symbol for tau/2? And during the interim it can go either way. Granted, I would hope anyone digging through old mat...

Re: Why is dog fighting morally wrong?

Assuming some theoretical stuff like virtue ethics being right for the sake of getting to the question at hand: Love is a virtue. Love being a sort of caring about other beings as intrinsic goods. You can get wrapped up in trying to justify a sort of hardcore consequentialism and convince yourself o...

Re: Breaking Up the United States

What's the payoff here? Taking (collections of) states' rights to the extreme? Sure, you take away the ability for anyone to impose anything on the whole country, but in exchange you're (as others have mentioned) making a lot of people either move or adapt to a country where they are even less well ...

Re: Math without calculators

Learning algorithms for arithmetic and other such things, sure. I know of no exact simplification for sin(.4). If someone is studying trig they should be able to ballpark it, but I see no benefit in math classes to bringing out a calculator to give a less precise answer. When things start become a r...

Re: Should I major in physics?

I changed majors seven times to no major adverse effects. If it looks like something that will compel you to study hard (sounds like it), then go for it. If you find out later you don't like it, switch.
