People do sell themselves into slavery today... Let's just be clear on the meaning of the word "slavery". Do you mean it in the sense of actual slaves, such as the ones that were stolen from Africa to work the plantations in the (US) South prior to the Civil War? The ones that were legall...

Re: The Darker Side of the News

Cities expand when more people move to them. Moving the capital is an administrative thing that could be accomplished relatively easily (compared to moving the entire population), but declaring that no new people or businesses are to move to the old city is rather harder to accomplish. And like, LA ...

Re: Terminology Question: Percentile vs Percentile Rank

From my understanding of the wikipedia articles, they're basically inverses of each other. So, for example, in some population the 89th percentile of mass is 100kg, and the percentile rank of 100kg is 89. The percentile is a mass, and the percentile rank is a percentage.

It looks like your basic question is why there's something rather than nothing, which as far as I know doesn't have any nice causal answer. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that the question can only be asked if there is something, so there's a bit of a selection bias there. There are a few oth...
