Re: 1448: "Question"

I was so unbelievably thrilled when I got this joke. I just read this story a week or so ago.

What's that called when you are introduced to a concept or story and then start to see it, or references to it more often? (Not necessarily because it actually IS appearing more often)

Re: 1409: "Query"

Come on, guys, this one's been up for 12 minutes and the Explain XKCD entry isn't even up yet? Who else reads the explain article for each page even if they get the joke? (Just to make sure we didn't miss anything :)) There's actually one or two times when I thought I got the joke, but I actually di...

Re: Bipedal Digitigrades?

Eh, maybe? I'd go with 'a long term cooling event locked the planet in a prolonged ice age, and life adapted/flourished underground'. Life as WE know it on Earth is/was dependant on photosynthesis to produce oodles of O2. I have a hard time imaging that being in reasonable equilibrium without ongoi...

Re: Bipedal Digitigrades?

It's very plausible, but it would have additional adaptations to make it so. Such an animal would probably have larger hind paws than what we think of dogs today having. Also, fwiw, it'd be inaccurate to call them 'canines', persay. Also, there's plenty of reasons to assume homologies for limb use ...

Re: Hard sci fi and the tyranny of the rocket equation

This may be too soft for hard Sci Fi, but I cheated my war around general space travel problems with the lovely fake invention, the Kinetic shield. Given enough BSing, you can justify not even needing any fuel, and just running a ship off of solar power. You can use this to handwave a lot of science...

Bipedal Digitigrades?

For a story I've been writing, I've come up with a few aliens to inhabit the universe - I'm choosing not to address pesky things like the odds of sophisticated alien species actually encountering each other in favor of a softer sci-fi - and an interesting question came up. One of the species I've cr...

Re: RELATIVITY QUESTIONS! (and other common queries)

What gmalivuk said; KE = ½mv² is just the low velocity non-relativistic approximation. However, there still might be an upper limit to temperature. Hot matter isn't simply a bunch of particles buzzing around. Some of that heat is in the form of electromagnetic radiation. Roughly speaking, the matte...

Re: RELATIVITY QUESTIONS! (and other common queries)

Hey, this is technically a question on heat, (and maybe kinetic molecular theory) but I think it fits here too. We've been told time after time that there is a limit to just how cold something can get. At absolute zero, a molecule has no kinetic energy, and it stops moving. Makes perfect sense. (Aft...

Re: FTL - ohcrapshieldsaredown!

Conversely, I hate playing against flak cannon. It's the cause of about 90% of my lost battles before sector 8. I was doing a run with the Zoltan A ship yesterday (during which I unlocked Zoltan B). I was doing really well - had my 3 starting Zoltans, plus Rock and Mantis recruits as a boarding tea...

Re: FTL - ohcrapshieldsaredown!

My Favorite is easily Stealth Cruiser B (Dat glaive beam tho), followed probably by the Federation Cruiser (took down the Flagship only using the Federation C's flak cannon after my weapons got hacked.) The flak cannon is probably my favorite addition to the game. It's so useful, because even with ...

Re: Frozen Synapse, anyone?

I think it's an awesome game, and there's already a thread for it. I haven't played in a long time. The menus can be cumbersome sometimes, but I've seen worse. But the gameplay is excellent, and even the gameplay interface could hardly be better. At least once you learn everything, which I didn't t...

Frozen Synapse, anyone?

There isn't really a discussion forum for a game that I felt would be right at home here, so I guess here is where we talk about this game. For those of you who've never played FS, it's a simultaneous tactics game that mixes elements of real-time and turn-based strategy. Gameplay revolves around plo...

Re: FTL - ohcrapshieldsaredown!

I've never heard of anyone actually liking the Engi B. It's my absolute least favorite, followed closely by the stealth cruisers. It's probably the only ship that, in its initial form, can never deal with more than one shield point. Kind of a non-issue though; by the time you get to enemies with 2 ...

Re: FTL - ohcrapshieldsaredown!

Favorite layouts, anyone? I don't have many unlocked, but so far I like Engi B the best. It's main disadvantage - the single crew member - can be easily overcome by making sure that you have around 65 scrap each time you enter a store and buying a new crew member. Not only that, but the heavy laser ...

Re: The Great Recommendation Thread (Movie, TV, Anime, Carto

Firefly is fantastic. I have only known a handful of people who haven't liked it. In general, the rule is, "There are two types of people: Browncoats (Firefly fans) and people who have never seen Firefly" If you're not a fan of sci-fi or drama, Community is my favorite comedy, mainly becau...
