Re: Reciprocal of a derivative

should this work ? Is it okay in a formal context? Why, when and whatfor? If f is invertible on some open set containing x, f is differentiable at x, and f'(x) is nonzero, then f -1 is differentiable at f(x), and \frac{d}{dy} f^{-1}(y)|_{y=f(x)}=\frac{1}{f'(x)}. For the ...

Re: The Fibonacci Sequence

Quotients of succesive Fibonacci numbers give the continued fraction convergents of the golden ratio [imath]\phi = (1 + \sqrt{5}) / 2[/imath].

Also, I rather suspect the editors of Fibonacci Quarterly think the sequence is of some interest. :-)

Re: Math Software

If you're a student, I highly recommend the student version of Mathematica . It runs $120 and will carry you from high school through graduate school, should you need it to. If you're not a student, I'm inclined to recommend SymPy or Sage. Both are Free Software (as in no cos...

Re: Turning a TI-84 into a TI-89

An 89 is not that expensive to begin with. It runs about the same as a college calculus textbook ($150 or so). Incidentally, I took calculus so long ago that to do the things the TI-89 does now, you would have needed a $3000 computer that weighs around 40 pounds, running a $1000 application. Today, ...

Re: Math Books

What is the best calculus book that is clear and concise and also easy to self-read/ teach yourself since I heard my school's AP BC Calculus book is miserable. I don't know about "best," but the Schaum's outline series is very cheap ($10 on Amazon) and easy to read. Gilbert Strang's text ...
