Re: British Snap Election - not a re-referendum?

↶ The YouGov poll a couple of days before the election that had Labour only 3(? based on my memory) points behind (as opposed to 7-20) was supposedly based on a higher-than-usual youth turnout. It was a bit of an outlier as a poll, but turned out to be closer to the real results than most. That sai...

Re: The Misogyny Kool-Aid

That is such a good point, the MRA movement getting focussed on specific groups of disenfranchised men would do a lot for their rep I think. Little/no focus on feminism and more of a focus on how to deal with police brutality against black men, or helping soldiers with PTSD or breaking down stigmas ...

True, it is not the primary function of physics to be pretty. Our JC is something of a bloodsport as well.

Though I have found it very illuminating to see what people believe is a well written or interesting paper alongside the less great examples.

I'm a PhD student in astronomy/astrophysics.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'what to expect' as I'm from the UK and our university systems are very different.

I think my question is: what are you envisaging when you think about taking physics at university?

So I didn't do so great over autumn-early winter. But I got a gym membership and my friend and I are trying out all the fitness classes. Re: Random natterings

Single cream and clotted cream are two very different beasts. I use single cream sometimes as a 'sauce' for pasta with bits of bacon and green beans. It's usually found as something to pour over desserts with a consistency of thick milk. Clotted cream you know of and is great with scones and jam. Wh...

Apologies, the single cream in my fridge looks like this and appears to be 19g per 100ml so whatever that means. Like, between 18-20%?

Clotted cream is great. Esp. with the whole cream tea thing.

Re: how do you pronounce 2016?

When I went to elementary schools in America, it was one of those weird things that people drilled into me as a kid. 'It's one hundred one, not one hundred and one, because you're not writing down one!'

Seems really weird because it feels way more natural to say 'one hundred and one'.
